Chances are we’re not going to see more about the years when Bucky Barnes was a mind controlled Russian assassin. Decades of mental deconstruction, tactical assassinations and political espionage will most likely be overlooked in the future of the MCU.

This is a huge missed opportunity for Marvel. But while it’s unlikely that Marvel will put any of that into movies or Netflix series, there is another option. Marvel has several video games currently in development, and a Winter Soldier game could hold huge potential.

Winter Soldier

How Would it Work?

In the video game world, Marvel has been mainly focusing on smartphone apps. But a recent deal with Square Enix promises to change that and give us some Triple AAA status releases with Marvel characters. There currently are plans for an Avengers game and several other unannounced games. One character that I think Marvel should make a game about is Bucky Barnes, The Winter Soldier. A game about Bucky shouldn’t be part of a separate continuity, it should be canon in the MCU. This would be similar to how STAR WARS: BATTLEFRONT 2’s main campaign story will be canon to the films.

A Winter Soldier franchise could chronicle the decades past in the MCU. We could see appearances from plenty of different characters throughout the Marvel timeline. Perhaps it could feature run-ins with Agent Peggy Carter or Hank Pym as Ant-Man in the ’80s. Maybe even a young Natasha Romanoff training in the Red Room or a younger Nick Fury. The game could potentially fill in the blanks between CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER all the way to CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR, while also covering the events in those movies from Bucky’s POV.

A game like this would be something completely unique to Marvel and spotlight a brilliantly complex character for fans to indulge in. Sebastian Stan has brought a masterful level of depth to this character over the years, but it would be great to see him further expand the character in a Triple A video game. With today’s technology, Sebastian Stan as the Winter Soldier could bring a new light to a whole new section of the MCU’s decade long story.

How Would it Play?

Snake of Metal Gear Solid, Sam Fisher of Splinter Cell

Gameplay could be something similar to Splinter Cell or Metal Gear Solid: A mixture of military espionage with huge, over the top, action set pieces that take place inside the MCU. From Hydra bases to S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarriers to the jungles of Wakanda, there are plenty of cool places to see Winter Soldier go. Give the game a serious, yet accurate treatment like the BATMAN: ARKHAM series. But also give it something to make it stand on its own entirely.

Marvel’s video game deal is with Square Enix, IO Interactive and Eidos Montreal. All of the studios mentioned are no stranger to stealth action games. Their resumes consist of games like DEUS EX: MANKIND EVOLVED, HITMAN and the TOMB RAIDER reboots, so there is absolutely the potential for the next great Action/Espionage franchise with The Winter Soldier.

Why Now?

Now is as good a time as any for a game like this to start production. The METAL GEAR SOLID series has ended, there are no apparent plans for a new SPLINTER CELL game anytime soon, and the HITMAN franchise seems to be on the back burner. The industry could absolutely use a new game in this genre.

With Marvel and big studios already working together, this would be a sure-fire win for the studios and fans. I can already see the cover art; the red book that Zemo obtained in CIVIL WAR to take control over Bucky.

So, what do you think? Could this potentially be a hit, or would you rather Marvel focus on other ventures? What stories and characters would you want to see in a Winter Soldier game? Let me know in the comments below! For everything comics, set your portal guns to ComicsVerse!
