I’m losing it, we’re all losing it, and so are the Avengers. Marvel Studios just dropped the first trailer for AVENGERS: ENDGAME! Let’s break it down before I break down and we all break down together.

AVENGERS: ENDGAME Trailer: The Title is ENDGAME!!!

So, we were lied to. The Russos denied ENDGAME was the title. I’ve never been more happy to be lied to in my life. The next AVENGERS movie will be titled ENDGAME! This is significant as it’s a call-back to the INFINITY WAR line Dr. Strange gives Tony when he asks him why he would give Thanos the Time Stone:

“We’re in the ENDGAME now…”

Before disappearing into dust, Strange tells Tony that there was no other way. This has led many fans to conclude, and rightly so, that Thanos getting all the Stones was the only way for the Avengers to defeat him later on, and Dr. Strange saw this as the only outcome out of millions.

Furthermore, AVENGERS: ENDGAME is a perfect title as it will be a concluding chapter for everything we’ve seen thus far in the MCU before a new chapter begins going forward.

AVENGERS: ENDGAME Trailer: Tony is Stranded

The AVENGERS: ENDGAME trailer begins with Tony, and he’s still in space. He looks to be alone, in a ship. It’s unclear as to whether or not he’s in the Guardians’ ship, but he turns on his damaged helmet to leave a recording for Pepper. He tells her that if she finds it to not feel bad. Part of the journey is the end.

He goes on to say that he’s adrift, having no food or water for the last four days. His oxygen will run out the next day and that will be it. He tells Pepper that as he dies, he will dream about her. He turns off the recording, and the Marvel logo shows up before turning to dust.

Apparently, after the battle on Titan, Tony ends up on this ship. Perhaps he’s trying to get back home and has now run out of power/supplies? He and Nebula were the only two survivors on Titan, though it doesn’t outright appear as though she is with him. As far as opening trailer scenes go, this one is pretty bleak, setting the tone for the rest of the AVENGERS: ENDGAME trailer, which only gets sadder from here.

AVENGERS: ENDGAME Trailer: Old MacThanos & the Decimation’s Aftermath

Next, we get a shot of Thanos’ armor hanging up in a field of crops in the fashion of a scarecrow. Then there’s a close-up shot of Thanos himself walking through his crops, Infinity Gauntlet still on his hand. Thanos is still on the farm we see at the end of the last film, perhaps literally enjoying the fruits of his labor. It’s interesting to note that while he’s now enjoying a quiet life as a farmer, he still has the Gauntlet on his hand. Did it fuse to his hand after he snapped his fingers? Or is he just paranoid, unwilling to part with it, seemingly to ensure his success lasts? Hard to say at this point.

We cut to Earth where we see Captain Steve Rogers in tears. Black Widow says that Thanos did exactly what he said he was going to do: He wiped out 50% of all living creatures. Bruce looks at monitors with images of Shuri, Peter Parker, and Scott Lang. These are some of those they believe to have disappeared during what we now know is being called the Decimation. Fans have long been referring to Thanos’ action as the Snap or the Snappening.

However, we now have this official name via Marvel. Peter Park is a given: we saw his death in INFINITY WAR. Shuri’s death is new information. Scott, however, is interesting. It looks as though the surviving Avengers believe Scott to have died as well. This would make sense, as the moment Scott gets trapped in the Quantum Realm is the same moment the Decimation occurs.

AVENGERS: ENDGAME Trailer: We Lost and A Plan

We see empty halls in the Avengers headquarters. Thor is sitting, looking angry. Steve speaks:

“We lost. All of us. We lost friends, we lost family…we lost a part of ourselves.”

As he speaks we see Nebula. It’s unclear where she is, but she could potentially be with Tony on the ship. When Steve says that they lost family, the trailer cuts to a hooded man in black. He wipes his sword on his arm. Natasha is looking at him. He turns, takes off his hood, and we see that it’s Clint Barton, the man who was once Hawkeye.

I say once because his costume is that of his dark Ronin persona, an identity he takes on in the comics after a great tragedy. Sadly, I think it’s safe to assume that Clint’s family is gone.

Steve stands with Natasha and says that this is the fight of their lives. He opens his compass with his picture of Peggy Carter in it, then closes it. Natasha tells him it’s going to work. “It” is most likely a last-ditch plan to bring their people back. He responds by saying he knows it is because he doesn’t know what he’s going to do if it doesn’t.

AVENGERS: ENDGAME Trailer: Is Anyone Home?

After the title reveals, there is one last scene. It’s Scott knocking on the Avengers’ door. He looks up at their security cameras and humorously asks if they remember him from the airport fight in CIVIL WAR. Steve and Natasha are understandably surprised, and Steve asks if this is an old message. From their perspective, Scott should be dead from the Decimation. Somehow, Scott gets out of the Quantum Realm and is looking for help. He asks if they can buzz him in.

Lastly, we get a final tag saying that the film will release in April, as opposed to May like it was originally announced. This is really cool as it means we’ll be getting the film just a little bit sooner!

AVENGERS: ENDGAME Trailer: What We Don’t See

For obvious reasons, we don’t see any of the people who die in INFINITY WAR. We also don’t see any indication that time travel will play into the film, although it’s been highly rumored and the evidence has been piling up via set photos. This could very well be the plan that has to work, the one that Natasha and Steve talk about.

Oddly, we don’t see Rocket, the last Guardian standing. When last we saw him, he was on Earth, watching Groot fade away. By all accounts, he should still be on Earth. We don’t see Captain Marvel either, but that makes sense, as we still have yet to be introduced to her.  Most likely we’ll have to wait until March and see CAPTAIN MARVEL before we can hazard any guesses as to how she’ll come into play for this one. All around, things look darker than they ever have before. I’m sure Thanos isn’t going to give up his victory without a fight, and there’s sure to be a heavy cost for whatever plan the remaining Avengers come up with. You can be certain of it with time travel.

Because we got the CAPTAIN MARVEL trailer 3 days ago, and the AVENGERS: ENDGAME trailer today, the rumor is that we’ll be getting a SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME trailer this weekend, so be on the lookout for that and check back here for the following breakdown! In the meantime, remember to breathe and try to limit your AVENGERS: ENDGAME trailer views to at least under 100 a day until the film releases.
