Takahashi’s major work, YU-GI-OH!, lasted from 1996 to 2004. To simplify, it told the story of Yugi, whose talented alter-ego aids him in playing gambling games. Of course, the series received worldwide praise and continues today through its many sequels, spinoffs, and game series.

MEGALO BOX Dub Gets In the Ring at Toonami

On Thursday, VIZ announced an English Dub of MEGALO BOX. The dub will premier on Toonami on Saturday, December 8, 2018. MEGALO BOX centers on the fantasy sport Megalo Boxing, a type of boxing in which the fighters wear metal frames that increase their lethal power. As such, the anime tells the story of a young man from the slums named Junk Dog who fights in illegal Megalo Boxing competitions. Most recently, Crunchyroll streamed the thirteen-episode series as it aired in April. The series pays tribute to boxing manga ASHITA NO JOE in the wake of its 50th anniversary.

VIZ Media Brings New Books and Old Favorites

Also on Thursday, VIZ Media announced two new manga acquisitions. First is THE ART OF NEON GENESIS EVANGELION: 2007-2017. Then, we have shojo manga DAYTIME SHOOTING STAR.

Just as it sounds, THE ART OF NEON GENESIS EVANGELION: 2007-2017 is a comprehensive art book. It contains ten years’ worth of illustration from the famous franchise. The book includes art from movies and collaborations with video games, as well as concept art, fashion spreads, and art from character designer Yoshiyuki Sadamoto. Famously, NEON GENESIS EVANGELION follows Shinji as he pilots mech Evangelion into battle against alien beings. A renowned show, EVANGELION earned several movies and video games over the course of its run. Presumably, the art book will mainly cover these spinoffs due to its focus on the years 2007-2017. VIZ will release the art book in Summer 2019.

In terms of newer books, DAYTIME SHOOTING STAR is a romance manga about a girl named Suzume Yosano. She moves from the countryside to Tokyo after her parents go abroad and attempts to navigate the trials of high school while also having a crush on her teacher. The manga received a popular live-action film adaptation in 2017. VIZ will release the first volume of the 12-volume series in summer 2019.

A Bright Future in Anime

With the summer anime season ending, it’s great to hear about what we have to look forward to during this fall and winter. Many of these new releases sound promising, and the new formats for existing series like MEGALO BOX sound easily accessible. VIZ gave us a lot to work with before the next big East Coast convention, Anime NYC. Taking place from November 16th through November 18th, we’ll see if VIZ has any other updates for us! In the meantime, there’s still plenty of amazing content from the convention to look at. Plus we’ll have the new season of CASTLEVANIA and the start of THE COMIQ to spend our time on.
