After months of speculation, the final member of the TITANS (2018) roster has been filled. And, by none other than Asian-American actor Ryan Potter (BIG HERO SIX and SUPAH NINJAS)! Ever since Geoff Johns confirmed Beast Boy’s appearance in the show, fans have been anxious to know who would play him.

Ryan Potter’s Previous Roles

Fans of the live-action Nickelodeon show SUPAH NINJAS (2011-2013) will recall Ryan Potter playing the leading role of Mike Fukanaga. In that show, Potter displayed his vast array of martial art talents that he acquired from training in White Tiger Kung Fu.

However, most people will recognize Ryan Potter for his role as Hiro Hamada in Disney’s animated Marvel film BIG HERO SIX (2014). Potter will continue to voice the character in the animated show based on the movie, which follows the adventures of Hiro, Baymax, and their friends.

Despite Potter’s role as a Marvel character, he has displayed interest in DC comics in the past. In the fall of 2016, he campaigned for the role of Tim Drake in the DCEU. He even made a short video showing off his skills as a fighter.

It was quick video, but it convinced many fans that Potter could work as Robin alongside Batman. He ended the video calling out to Ben Affleck on how Batman needs a Robin.

TITANS (2018): Ryan Potter as Beast Boy

Even though Potter will not play Robin, he will be playing Teen Titan fan-favorite Beast Boy. The past incarnations of Beast Boy typically feature him as the comic relief character of the group. Ryan Potter has not had any role which could be categorized as comedic.

Although his character of Mike Fukanaga on SUPAH NINJAS was amusing, it was mostly because of his social awkwardness. Beast Boy’s humor derives from cheesy one-liners that typically make fans either laugh out loud or groan by how cringe-worthy they are. Only time will tell how successful Ryan Potter will be in portraying this kind of character. But, I, for one, am confident in his ability as an actor.

Pros & Cons: The Possible Changes To Beast Boy’s Character

If I had any concern about this casting choice, it would be Potter’s age. At the age of 22, he will not be the youngest member of the team. Even though there are incarnations of the Titans in which Beast Boy is not the youngest member, the ones where Beast Boy is the youngest member are my favorite.

Beast Boy’s personality is akin to a little brother, someone who tries a bit too hard to be cool. Also with the casting of 13-year-old actor Teagan Croft as Raven, this casting choice of Ryan Potter eliminates any romantic story between the two. Beast Boy was one of my favorite characters on the Teen Titans TV show on Cartoon Network in the early 2000s.

I am excited to see how Ryan Potter brings this classic character to life once TITANS airs on the DC streaming network. There is not a confirmed date as to when the show or the streaming service will be released, but fans should expect it in early 2018.

What do you think about this casting choice? Do you like it or would you have picked someone else?
