We are less than a week away from the release of CAPTAIN MARVEL! With that in mind, is it possible that the film could reference future MCU events that happen in AGENTS OF SHIELD? Let’s take a look at the potential ties that we could see.

CAPTAIN MARVEL to Feature Clark Gregg as Young Coulson

The biggest tie between CAPTAIN MARVEL and AGENTS OF SHIELD that we know of for sure is the appearance of a young Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg). That’s right: It won’t just be the young Nick Fury we’ll see when Carol Danvers meets SHIELD. Phil Coulson, one of the leading characters of the SHIELD series, will be working with Fury. Reports suggest that the events in CAPTAIN MARVEL will not only be SHIELD’s first foray into aliens and powered people, but also Phil’s first time working with Fury.

After Phil’s death at the hands of Loki in the first AVENGERS, Fury brings Phil back to life. He gave Coulson a big jet, his own team, and many missions to help safeguard the world. Eventually, this spirals into new scenarios, such as Fury making Phil the director of a new SHIELD after the original SHIELD falls in WINTER SOLDIER. Given Fury and Phil’s long history together, it shall be really cool to see them meeting together for the first time and working together. Especially considering that the specific aliens they’re dealing with in the past will have a huge impact on Coulson’s life and career down the line in the series.

The Kree Empire and Project T.A.H.I.T.I

Right off the bat, we know that Captain Marvel will be caught in the middle of the Kree/Skrull War. This means that in 1995, the Kree will be on Earth. Reports from producers, actors, and the trailers tell us that this film will show SHIELD’s first large alien interaction.

Now, according to Marvel’s AGENTS OF SHIELD, we have discovered that SHIELD has at least one Kree corpse in its possession. After harvesting some of its organs, they discover some pretty interesting applications. For instance, a formula derived from Kree blood is what Fury uses to bring Coulson back from the dead. Could it be that this Kree corpse, or others like it, were recovered by SHIELD after the events of CAPTAIN MARVEL? That would be some pretty cool connective tissue.

CAPTAIN MARVEL Could Reference Inhumans

Another potential reference that could be made is the Inhumans. And no, I don’t mean the INHUMANS series that serves as Marvel’s lowest point. While the series is about Inhumans, the royal family and their kingdom on the moon, AGENTS OF SHIELD serves as the first real Inhuman introduction. SHIELD tells us that Inhumans are a byproduct of Kree experimentation on the human race hundreds of years ago, giving them powers and making them into weapons. Now, the descendants of those experimented-on humans have the potential for powers as well via exposure to what’s known as Terrigen crystals.

By its second season, one of its main characters, Skye, became the Inhuman known as Quake. Much of SHIELD’s second and third season has to do with the Inhumans and other artifacts that Kree left on Earth.

I don’t expect CAPTAIN MARVEL to delve too deeply into Inhumans. It would be cool to see someone like Ronan the Accuser or the Supreme Intelligence refer to the Kree Empire’s past exploits of experimentation on Earth.

AGENTS OF SHIELD Gets Index and 084 Inspiration from CAPTAIN MARVEL

AGENTS OF SHIELD has several missions where Coulson’s team has to deal with people on SHIELD’s Index. The Index is a list SHIELD collects of people in the world who have gifts and/or enhancements. They could either be good or bad. Regardless, it’s certainly possible that Carol Danvers’ emergence as an enhanced individual could inspire Fury/Coulson to create the Index. They could start cataloging and keeping a record of super-powered individuals. It would be the start of their protocols regarding their world that’s only going to get stranger and stranger. Those protocols would be the start of what would eventually become the Avengers Initiative. Finding a group of remarkable people to fight the battle that they never could, as Fury says.

Similarly, we could see the start of 084s as well as another focus of Coulson and the company’s missions. A 084 is an object of powerful and/or extraordinary origin. SHIELD’s job is to go find and secure those objects, thereby keeping the world safer from. Thor’s hammer has a 084 classification, as do several other items Coulson’s team came into contact with on the series, like the Kree Obelisk. It could be that whatever object that explodes, giving Carol powers, would be considered an 084.

Memory Manipulation Foreshadowing to AGENTS OF SHIELD

Lastly, there is an opportunity to foreshadow Coulson’s memory manipulation in AGENTS OF SHIELD in CAPTAIN MARVEL.

Courtesy of the trailer, we know that Carol will initially be unable to remember her past life on Earth. Eventually, it looks like those memories will start to return. Also in the trailers, we see Carol hooked up to an assumed Kree machine, working on her brain. It could be that her memories were altered, making her think that she is a pink-skinned Kree like Yon-Rogg.

Perhaps Carol shares her loss of memory and potential memory replacement with Fury and Coulson when she comes to Earth. If she were, we could potentially get a cool/funny line from Coulson about how that must be unfortunate or that he would never want that to happen to him. As we know from AGENTS OF SHIELD, Fury has Coulson’s memories of his Kree blood infusion removed and replaced to keep him sane, so this sort of retroactive foreshadowing would be pretty cool as well.

Coulson Is Enough, Anything Else is Extra in CAPTAIN MARVEL

Being the crazy Coulson fan that I am, I couldn’t be happier that Phil is in CAPTAIN MARVEL. Furthermore, to have a film reference to a television series as I’ve suggested would make me super happy as well. It’s become harder and harder for SHIELD to reference the films as they can put the show in a narrative box. The production schedules and environments are also very different, which creates difficulty as well. Even so, it would be incredible to see CAPTAIN MARVEL reference AGENTS OF SHIELD. But even if it doesn’t, getting more Coulson on the big screen will be amazing. Even beyond that will be a bonus. We won’t have to wait much longer to find out!

CAPTAIN MARVEL releases this Friday, March 8th. The next season of AGENTS OF SHIELD comes to ABC this May.
