Fans are still reeling over X-MEN GOLD #30’s unexpected twist. After Kitty Pryde made the heartbreaking decision to leave Colossus at the altar, Gambit took it upon himself to solidify his commitment to his love, Rogue. As a result, the two tied the knot and are now ready to embark on new adventures in MR. AND MRS. X #1!

From writer Kelly Thompson, the latest X-Men series will follow the newlyweds as they try to balance post-wedding bliss with superhero obligations because as we all know, the honeymoon doesn’t last forever!

Honeymoon Crashers

The introduction of MR. AND MRS. X #1 traverses the marriage and subsequent honeymoon between Rogue and Gambit. Their big day is abundant with joy and special guests, including Rogue’s mother: Mystique. However, the newlyweds’ joy eventually gets interrupted by X-Men leader Kitty Pryde in the midst of their honeymoon.

Kitty informs the couple of an emergency within space that requires their attention. She doesn’t provide many details, but she does state that Rogue and Gambit must intercept a package before anyone else does. So, left with no other choice, the couple pursues the mission. Unsurprisingly, it does not go smoothly.

The Unexpected Happens in X-MEN GOLD #30

A variety of villains including Astra and Manta ambush Rogue and Gambit with the intention of taking the package for themselves. As a result, the two sides battle it out, resulting in Rogue getting sucked out into space to Gambit’s horror.

A Belated Wedding Gift

Sometime later, Rogue wakes up in an unknown location. To her, and my, surprise, Deadpool is sitting beside her, holding what appears to be the coveted package.

Ultimately, MR. AND MRS. X #1 is a funny and quirky introduction to Thompson’s latest run. However, as a follow-up to the incredible ROGUE & GAMBIT series, it falls short. The plot takes a while to find its footing, and the narrative spends a lot of time on the wedding sequences rather than developing the overarching plot. As a result, the climax and ending of the issue feel rushed. Additionally, I could’ve used a little more character development in regard to the issue’s leads, particularly considering they’ve experienced a life-changing event.

Overall though, the issue is extremely entertaining. It’s certainly a refreshing work compared to some of the darker X-Men storylines circulating right now. Also, Deadpool’s surprise appearance is a nice treat.

So, with a talent such as Kelly Thompson behind the wheel, I believe this run has plenty of potential that will prove that this series is worth sticking with.

The Many Hues of MR. AND MRS. X #1

Though Oscar Bazaldua and Frank D’Armata are exceptional artists, I found their work on MR. AND MRS. X #1 to be a bit of a letdown. The issue features some inconsistent depictions of characters. For example, the first page features varying depictions of Rogue’s appearance alone. Also, the fight sequences towards the end appear disjointed.

The Final Fight is Here in ROGUE & GAMBIT #5!

Regarding the coloring, the tones D’Armata implements into the issue aren’t as dynamic as one would expect. Soft golds, pinks, and blues dominate the pages in segments. As a result, MR. AND MRS. X #1 lacks a certain vibrancy.

Now, the variant covers for this installment are exceptional. Lucio Parrillo’s cover is simply a gorgeous work of art that excels in its detail while Skottie Young’s evokes a quirky, playful tone that transcends the page. Thus, I hope future entries of the series capture the lightheartedness the narrative maintains. If it does, readers will better engage with the run’s imagery.

What Lies Beyond

MR. AND MRS. X #1 may not live up to the expectations of ROGUE & GAMBIT fans. However, it is a fun read that is worth checking out, especially when things are about to get quite complicated!

With Deadpool and intergalactic missions interrupting Rogue and Gambit’s honeymoon, will this marriage even make it through the series?

I guess we’ll just have to stay tuned!
