Hi, my name is Jake, and I’m a 27-year-old law student from Chicago. I grew up in the northwest suburbs of Chicago and went to college at the University of Chicago. I’ve been an English teacher abroad, a pizza delivery guy, a women’s shoe salesman, a customer service representative, and a lifelong intern. I like comics and beagles.

What is your favorite comic book and why?
I have a lot of favorites: All-Star Superman (Morrison and Quitely), Casanova (Fraction and Moon/Ba), The Umbrella Academy (Way and Moon/Ba), Asterios Polyp (Mazzuchelli), Jimmy Corrigan (Ware), Persepolis (Satrapi), Copra (Fiffe), and tons of others.

If you could have one superpower what would it be?
I would find stuff that’s lost.

What comics make you happy?
Anything by Gabriel Ba and Fabio Moon is great. Generally, I’m open—I love comics, and I’m usually happy when I get to read them.

Which comic book characters do you most admire?
I’ll go with Daredevil. He’s an attorney, and I’m tryna be one.

Which comic book characters do you most despise?
I don’t think I’m invested enough in any characters to despise any of them.

What is the quality you most like in a creator (writer or artist)?
I like creators who are doing the most with the medium. Joe Sacco’s comics are good because he’s doing something interesting with comics (specifically, hard news reporting). I always think of Ganges by Kevin Huizenga when I think about this: He does such cool stuff with comics. Other than that, I’m just looking for stuff that’s unusual.

Which words or phrases do you most overuse?
“You know.”

Which comic book character would you most easily fall in love with?
I’d be intimidated by most characters in Marvel and DC. Storm? Fuggetaboutit. Probably Frances Scarland from Ethan Rilly’s Pope Hats. She seems nice.

Which creator talent would you most like to have?
Drawing. Seems fun.

If you were to die and come back as a person or a thing (character or creator), what would it be?
A floppy-eared, tricolored beagle, lord willing.

What fictional universe would you most like to live?
The WWE Universe, where everyone has gigantic muscles, you never have to use your words (but you can if you want to), and the good guys always win eventually.

What comic is your most treasured possession?
Batman and Robin #1 from Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely. That was my first comic book; my best friend picked it out for me.

What do you most value in your friends?
Loyalty, tolerance, and a sense of humor.

Who are your favorite writers?
Philip Roth, Junot Diaz, Jonathan Franzen, Jonathan Lethem, and Gabriel Garcia Marquez. In comics, it’s hard to separate out writing from art, but I like Grant Morrison, Scott Snyder, Jeff Lemire, Chris Ware, Dan Clowes, and Adrian Tomine, among others.

Who is your hero of comic book fiction?
My fictional hero is Spider-Man. Great power, great responsibility, etc.

Which comic book figure do you most identify with?
Probably Andre the Giant, from Box Brown’s Andre the Giant.

Who are your heroes in real life?
My parents and siblings are all heroes to me. Of non-Grubmans, I consider Barack Obama a personal hero.

What is the comic book that you most dislike?
No specifics, but major events are usually bad.

What comic storyline would you most like to change?
I’d get rid of Superman’s secret identity. People who know Clark Kent can’t recognize that he’s Superman? Come on now.

Which comic book character do you think should die a permanent non-comic book death?
This is probably Superman for me, too. There’s not much more for him to do in comics, and he’s increasingly hard to write.

What is your personal motto?
“Much of life consists of doing things that you don’t really want to do for reasons that you don’t entirely understand.”
