Several favorite comic book TV Shows debuted their trailers this year at San Diego Comic-Con. At the convention, one of the most anticipated shows of the summer, THE DEFENDERS, released its second full-length trailer. The Eight-episode Netflix show combines superheroes Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, and Luke Cage into one crime fighting team. Each of these characters has starred in previously successful Marvel Netflix shows. This second DEFENDERS trailer shows a lot more action from each of the characters as well as hinting at the general storyline for the show. There is a lot to unpack from this trailer as it has a lot of connections to previous Marvel Netflix shows, includes Easter Eggs from the comics, as well as showing what we can expect from the team dynamic of the titular Defenders. We are going to spoil the endings of the most recent seasons of all four currently released Marvel Netflix shows as well as speculate on the events of the Defenders. If you want to be completely surprised by the events of THE DEFENDERS, do not read this article. Where Did We Leave Off? From what the second DEFENDERS trailer shows as well as what we have heard from people who have seen the first episode, this show takes some time to reveal how each member of the Defenders came together. It looks like each character is positioned in the same relative situation that their respective show left them in. Daredevil and Elektra from DAREDEVIL Season 2. Courtesy of Netflix and Marvel Television. Let’s start with DAREDEVIL season 2 because THE DEFENDERS seem to follow events most. This is not a coincidence, after all, Douglas Petrie and Marco Ramirez are showrunners for both DAREDEVIL season 2 and THE DEFENDERS. Throughout season 2, the villainous group known as The Hand have drained the blood of young individuals to activate a being known as “The Black Sky.” It was at the end of this series that Nobu, the leader of The Hand, revealed that Elektra Natchios, Daredevil’s ex-lover, and frienemy, was Black Sky. Soon after, Nobu kills Elektra, and then Daredevil defeats Nobu. However, The Hand exhumes Elektra’s body and places her in an ancient device. READ: Want more details on Elektra? Look at this article for speculation on her DEFENDERS’ role Then there is Luke Cage who at the end of his first season went to jail. As an escaped felon, Luke is serving a prison sentence. From what we see in the first trailer of THE DEFENDERS, Luke may break out of the prison pretty early on in the first episode. That leaves the black sheep series IRON FIST. Despite its unpopularity, THE DEFENDERS seems to take events in Iron Fist into account. At the end of IRON FIST, Danny Rand and Colleen Wing travel to Kun-Lun only to find that it has been destroyed. At the beginning of this trailer, we see Danny and Colleen exit a helicopter, presumably after their trip to Kun-Lun. Where Do We Start? “More Death is coming and the only thing keeping Manhattan from crumbling to a pile of dust is the four of you.” Based off what happens in the second DEFENDERS trailer, the previous trailer, and the previous Netflix shows, I think there is a lot of room to piece together what is happening in this series. In this trailer, Danny and Colleen exit the helicopter and find that the ground is shaking. Later we see Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage react as cars, tables, and streetlights fall. We then see Stick, Daredevil and Elektra’s gruff blind mentor, wearing some cool new glasses. He warns the Defenders “More Death is coming and the only thing keeping Manhattan from crumbling to a pile of dust is the four of you.” The second DEFENDERS trailer outright confirms that The Hand and Sigourney Weaver’s Alexandra Reid have resurrected Elektra. We know that The Hand is on a mission to activate Black Sky and that involves Elektra’s help. We also know that The Hand plans to destroy New York. This leads me to the conclusion that The Hand has activated some form of earthquake device in Manhattan. Each of the Defenders must discover this in the first episode which leads them in a fight against The Hand. Sigourney Weaver’s Alexandra Reid. Image Courtesy of Netflix. We see a board meeting in a crystalline white building where Reid and other business people/Hand members have congregated. Danny Rand goes to confront this meeting on his own, but the members of The Hand quickly overpower him. That is when Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Daredevil break down the doors and back him up in the fight. After the battle, the four heroes run to a restaurant for rest and safety. The restaurant’s name, “Royal Dragon,” is probably a nod to IRON FIST’s Shou-Lao the Undying. They share quips which evoke their own AVENGERS-Schwarma moment. This will be our first exchange featuring all the Defenders. What Happens Next? After their dinner, the heroes must form a loose alliance to stop The Hand. Each of the heroes has their own baggage in this fight. Daredevil wants to save Elektra from the grips of The Hand and to prevent her from forever losing her humanity. Jessica Jones is probably following a case which has quickly evolved into something much larger. Iron Fist is interested in finding out what happened to Kun-Lun. Luke Cage is struggling with his relationship with Jessica after their last meeting in JESSICA JONES. READ: Missed the first DEFENDERS trailer? Here’s our breakdown! Then it looks like The Hand will directly target the lives of the Defenders. We see friends of each hero Foggy Nelson and Karen Page for Daredevil, Pat Walker for Jessica Jones, and Darryl and Colleen Wing for Iron Fist. Danny claims that “they are attacking those who are close to us.” It looks like the Defenders will have their hands (sorry for the unintentional pun) busy trying to stop The Hand’s operations in New York while protecting the people they love. Character Dynamic Based off what we see in this second DEFENDERS trailer, we get an idea of what the team relationships will be. I think it’s likely that the first episode will split the characters into two parts before coming altogether. In the first trailer, we see that Daredevil will meet Jessica Jones in police custody. This introduction makes a lot of sense. Rosario Dawson’s Claire Temple has already told Jessica Jones about Daredevil. She mentioned that their mutual senses of justice would draw each other close to one another. This makes sense, and I could see Jessica Jones and Matt Murdock becoming good friends in the series. Of course, Jessica will probably try to push Matt away initially. We see her trying to avoid him while he follows her down a New York City street. Courtesy of Netflix and Marvel Television. Then Claire will introduce Luke Cage to Iron Fist. I am extremely interested to see the exchanges between Luke and Danny since the two are so different. I think there’s a likely chance that the rest of team will not initially take Iron Fist seriously due to his petulant attitude and because of his claims of possessing mystic powers. READ: Missed the first DEFENDERS trailer? Here’s our breakdown! We get the great exchange where Iron Fist says that his hand is “chi” powers his hand only for Jessica Jones to silence him by saying “it’s not.” The only chance to resuscitate the popularity of Iron First after his god-awful first season may be to have him be a joke for a part of THE DEFENDERS and prove his mettle later in the series. “I’m not looking for super friends” While the Marvel Netflix shows have had their ups and downs, they have done a great job creating unique, unusual heroes. These heroes are loners who often live a destructive lifestyle, very different than the lighthearted Avengers. When Luke Cage remarks, “I’m not looking for super friends,” it is perhaps a nod to DC’s SUPER FRIENDS TV Show. Each Defender has serious hurdles they are going to have to cross to trust in others and form the Defenders. Final Thoughts on THE DEFENDERS trailer There is so much to look forward to in next month’s THE DEFENDERS. The action looks spectacular, the plot looks intense, but I am most interested in the characters of this series. I have grown to love Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage over several years on TV. I cannot wait to see how they interact together. As for Iron Fist, well I can’t wait to see how they bring this odd character into the rest of the Netflix universe. The second DEFENDERS trailer does a fantastic job at ramping up excitement for this series. You can count on me to binge THE DEFENDERS when it comes out on August 18th.
