The story is great and has an intriguing plot. It's a real battle of wits and both the Riddler and Batgirl are presented at their best in this issue. Absolutely, a must read! 90 % RSVP TO RIDDLES! With Batman and Catwoman’s wedding right around the corner, not everyone is feeling the love. The Riddler has turned all of Burnside into one, giant puzzle. Only Batgirl has the brain power to unravel the clues. It’s Batgirl versus brainteasers in BATMAN: PRELUDE TO THE WEDDING – BATGIRL VS. THE RIDDLER #1. The Battle For Best Man in BATMAN: PRELUDE TO THE WEDDING – NIGHTWING VS HUSH #1 A Battle of Wits BATMAN: PRELUDE TO THE WEDDING – BATGIRL VS. THE RIDDLER #1 begins with a cassette player left for Batgirl. Since she is so adept with technology, Riddler thinks he will be able to stump her with his pre-recorded riddles. Who still knows what cassettes are? Each puzzle coincides with a kidnapped victim. And each victim represents a person usually involved with weddings. A florist, A DJ, A priest, and A ring-bearer. After the last puzzle is solved, she comes face-to-face with the Riddler, who, apparently, has had a revelation on his life. Batman has found love in Catwoman. As a result, Riddler questions his own love life. Will he ever find love too? This is the one question even the Riddler is unable to answer. He realized he is attracted to intelligence. Hence why he devises this gauntlet of riddles. Specifically, for Batgirl. So, that’s one way to get a girl’s attention. BATMAN: PRELUDE TO THE WEDDING – BATGIRL VS. THE RIDDLER #1 page 12. In BATMAN: PRELUDE TO THE WEDDING – BATGIRL VS. THE RIDDLER #1, another unexpected guest arrives. The last pages of this comic show Harley Quinn making an appearance. And she’s looking for the Joker. So, is this foreshadowing for an upcoming one-shot? Looks like it. And I can’t wait. Bold Art Style Batgirl is constantly on the move in BATMAN: PRELUDE TO THE WEDDING – BATGIRL VS. THE RIDDLER #1. The artwork by Minkyu Jung and José Marzán Jr. captures perfectly the heroine at her best. While she is rescuing the kidnapped citizens, you can really feel the urgency. Every action is swift and fluid. Especially when she is swinging through the streets of Burnside. An Unexpected Wedding Crasher In BATMAN: PRELUDE TO THE WEDDING – ROBIN VS. RA’S AL GHUL #1 Also, I like the coloring in this issue. While she is leaping into action, Batgirl’s purple and gold suit is eye-catching in every panel. The bright yellow backgrounds during her fight scenes with Riddler’s minions was also a nice touch. Overall, the artwork is dynamic and truly a sight to see. Riddle Me This! The Riddler as a character is put under a microscope in BATMAN: PRELUDE TO THE WEDDING – BATGIRL VS. THE RIDDLER #1. Throughout this issue, we follow his train of thought, as well as his puzzling puzzles, with the pre-recorded tapes. Over time, his narration goes from talking about his role as Riddler and his riddles to talking about his past relationships with women. Then, he realizes, he is attracted to intelligence and Batgirl is the only one who mentally challenges him. Which makes his reasoning behind his puzzles is almost profound. At the end of this issue, Batgirl and Riddler can relate to each other on some level. Surprisingly, they share some common ground. Will either of them ever find someone to love who will accept every part of them? Even the heroine or villain side? Because of the crimes he has committed, this mastermind wonders if he will be able to find love yet feels “irredeemable”. On the other hand, Batgirl answers this question by going out on a limb and asking Nightwing out for a coffee date. Maybe a wedding hook-up is on the horizon. Who knows? THE RIDDLER #1 BATMAN: PRELUDE TO THE WEDDING – BATGIRL VS. THE RIDDLER #1 is an amazing comic. Nothing feels static in this issue. With fantastic artwork by Minkyu Jung and José Marzán Jr, every leap and punch looks dynamic and awesome. Also, the character depictions look great. And the story is just as awsome as the artwork, thanks to Tim Seeley. Unlike the previous one-shots, this issue didn’t need a far-fetched plot line to be interesting. From the Riddler’s classic puzzles and Batgirl’s use of intellect, the characters kept the story grounded and real. I’d go as far to say it’s the best one-shot in the Prelude to the Wedding series yet. Overall, this was a real battle of wits, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Up next in the Prelude to the Wedding series is Red Hood Versus Anarky. Which means even more chaos is coming.
