Prepare Your War Cry

DARK NIGHTS: METAL #5 cycles through the divided teams across the universe to answer questions that have so far left unanswered since the beginning of REBIRTH. Starting off in the book is Barbados, now in Gotham City, grasping onto the Anti-Monitor’s antenna. Ready to finally unleash his army and his plans to destroy the multiverse. Batman and Superman leap across the Forge of Worlds, searching for the light Dream told them would save them. The battered and torn heroes push on with what’s left of their strength while fighting corrupted images of their past.

Finally, a big revelation comes to play as we’re finally told why Plastic Man has retracted himself into an egg form. Also, a long-awaited character in the DCU makes his Rebirth appearance. Fan’s have been questioning his absence since the reboot, and it sounds like he’s going to be a major character going forward.

Wonder Woman faces the army of the Dark Multiverse with Kendra, and it looks like a hell of a battle. Filled with action DARK NIGHTS: METAL #5 has major moments for all of our favorite heroes. With only two more issues are left in the DARK NIGHTS series, there’s still much to explain.

Walking, Walking, and More Walking in DARK NIGHTS: METAL #5

Overall, Snyder continues to amaze us with this epic story. He’s moving each pair of characters like chess pieces, keeping us guessing how it will all turn out. Our heroes are in the midst of something that seems impossible to get through. The issue itself has so much packed into it though that it has essentially turned into the LORD OF THE RINGS.

Despite minor victory the heroes obtain, Barbatos always finds a way to keep them from moving forward. The constant step forward and giant blowback has begun to become unproportioned. The end seems nowhere in sight with how epic the destruction has become. With the next installment labeled as more of issue #5.5 of the series, there’s definitely a lot that has to wrap up rather quickly.

NYCC 2017: Interview with DARK NIGHTS: METAL artist Jonathan Glapion

This issue seems to act as just one more step to raise the stakes and keep the ability to win impossible. Everything an epic event should consist of. Overall, Capullo’s artwork in DARK NIGHTS: METAL #5  looks better than ever. Getting to see him draw so many characters and adding new ones every issue makes it pleasurable in every way. Some of the coolest moments he has crafted so far are the Joker dragons on page one and his Hawkman kaiju. It looks like we have a whole Dark Multiverse of characters that will come into play in future issues as well.

One Step Closer

Overall, this ride is approaching its conclusion, and there doesn’t seem to be a happy ending in sight. Where will the light lead Bruce and Clark too? What role will this new character play? How will our heroes go against an entire Dark Multiverse by themselves? There’s a lot on the table, and we’re excited to see it play out.

It’s been awhile since any publisher has given us an event like this. It feels similar to CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS or INFINITY GAUNTLET with how high the stakes have become. With as dark and horrific the situation is, it’s also loaded with fun and mysteries like many of the older series. So, keep an eye out for DARK NIGHTS METAL: THE WILD HUNT coming out next month.
