Unlike BLACK CLOVER, however, it’s actually good. RADIANT is shaping up to be the next big shonen title of the anime world. This is great because there’s a huge gap in that particular zone of the industry. Longtime classics like NARUTO and BLEACH have ended, and fans are craving a replacement. But, with anime like MY HERO ACADEMIA blazing into top spots, the bar is raised. It’s no longer enough to have some basic fighting scenes and occasional fancy animation. Now, the best anime need to not only be good in theory but in practice too. What that basically means is this: without solid execution of an amazing premise, new anime won’t reach today’s incredibly high standard. That’s where RADIANT comes in. The anime tells the story of a magical world filled with the mystical power of Fantasia. Fantasia grants incredible abilities to its wielders. Essentially, its a form of magic usable for either good or evil. The main character, Seth, is one of the few “infected” that survived the arrival of strange creatures called the Nemesis. These beings corrode and destroy things they come into contact with, so they’re pretty good to get rid of. Seth wants to become a hunter and destroy the Nemesis, but he has a long way to go. Seth using his incredible power. | Image: CrunchyrollHe has a lot of the tropes of a classic shonen character. Creator Tony Valente crafted Seth with strong resolve and will but some naivete. At the beginning of the series, he’s still learning a lot about his power and the world from his master. In fact, he doesn’t even know what a Nemesis is, let alone how to fight one. RADIANT is an anime sure to build upon that classic shonen foundation.Anime Retrospectives: PRINCESS JELLYFISHAn Exciting New RADIANT Trailer! RADIANT as a concept originated in France. It started off as a comic book series before getting an adaptation by manga publisher Asukahsinsha. The anime initially announced its upcoming premiere on January 31st of this year. But, this is still an early look. Chances are, we’ll get a lot more information about the show as we approach the October release date. The coming weeks have a lot in store. For now, check out the new trailer here from the official website. A scene from the trailer. | Image: RADIANT Official WebsiteThe trailer explores the meaning of magic in the world. On top of that, it gives us a look at the sorcerers of RADIANT. As manga readers will know just pages in, the world doesn’t idolize magic users. In fact, plenty of people demonize them as evil existences. Radiant will likely explore the ramifications of using unnatural power. Like any shonen, there’s always a moral struggle. On top of that, looks and sounds incredible. The series is directed by Seiji Kishi (HAMATORA, PERSONA) and Daisei Fukuoka (DANGANROPA). Makoto Uezu (AKAME GA KILL) will be writing while studio Lerche handles animation. RADIANT’s opening theme song is “Utopia” by 04 Limited Sazabys. The ending theme is “Radiant” by Polkadot Stingray. Why CELLS AT WORK WorksThe Next Member of Shonen’s Big 3?RADIANT represents a near-perfect melding of Western and Eastern media. Oftentimes, Western studios try to mimic the artistic depth of anime by superimposing their own directing styles (*cough*, DEATH NOTE) and fail. RADIANT, starting as a comic and transcending to the world of anime, is unique. Even more, it’s already managed to secure a solid fan base via the RADIANT manga.Already it looks to be a much more satisfying series than a lot of other shonen out right now. And, unlike a certain pint-sized screaming wizard protagonist, it’s characters are compelling. You can purchase English manga for RADIANT from Viz here. The magical shonen series premieres October 6th!What do you think of the new trailer? Let us know in the comments below!Featured image from Crunchyroll.
