The Punisher! Thanks for the love yall. Let's get it. Honored. pic.twitter.com/ZQ4xNfocHH — Jon Bernthal (@jonnybernthal) June 9, 2015 The vigilante has a troubled history on the Big Screen, and it was only in 2010 that Marvel regained the rights to the character. At the 2010 San Diego Comic Con, Kevin Feige said he was hoping for a Punisher movie; but that never materialized, and fans had been wondering for quite a while what would come next. And then came this year’s success with the Daredevil Netflix series. On Netflix, Marvel have the opportunity to explore the darker underbelly of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, focusing in on the harsh and gritty reality of vigilante crimefighters. Daredevil’s success left us confident that there was never any doubt of a Season 2, but the Punisher’s role was a surprise. How Netflix and ABC add depth and tone to the Marvel Universe! And then there’s Marvel’s official announcement, which says that the Punisher is “a vigilante who aims to clear up New York’s Hell’s Kitchen by any means necessary, no matter how lethal the results”. In the comics, the Punisher has often been a foil for Spider-Man; here, it sounds like he’ll play a key role. The first season of Daredevil included scenes where the vigilante had to choose what kind of hero he’ll be, and how far he’ll go. The Punisher, it seems, will be his dark mirror; a man who made the opposite choice, to go all the way and kill evil-doers. This promises to be a very interesting role, and a series that carefully displays the contrast between Daredevil and the Punisher could be a deeply personal, and introspective, one.Of course, there’s another side to this. We don’t know for sure what’ll happen to the Punisher – will he even survive the series? – but it looks likely that Marvel will use Daredevil Season 2 as a launch-pad for a Netflix series centred around Frank Castle. And there’s a distinct possibility that they may use the same strategy for other characters, such as Ghost Rider. Regardless, the fact remains that the Punisher’s back – and he’s going to make sure that crime doesn’t pay! Check out more articles by Tom!
