The official trailer for AVENGERS INFINITY WAR released over a month ago. When it came out, fans were ecstatic. That feeling has hardly faded since then, as it gave everyone a lot to talk about. Fans have been coming up with tons of speculation and theories about the film since the trailer’s release. One of the biggest things fans are theorizing about are the potential AVENGERS INFINITY WAR deaths.

Though the MCU is no stranger to death, most of the deaths thus far have been villain deaths. Killing off the villains of the films was an easy way to wrap up their story arcs and keep them from causing trouble later on. Some have survived, but most have been taken off the table for good.

One thing the MCU has rarely touched upon is the potential for hero deaths. Sure, there’s supposed to be this tension that the heroes could die during their films, but at this point in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s history, that tension just isn’t believable anymore. AVENGERS INFINITY WAR is about to shake up that dynamic completely.

AVENGERS INFINITY WAR: There Could Be More Than a Few Deaths

If you’ve read the original INFINITY GAUNTLET story, you probably know that it’s a bit of a bloodbath. Well, it’s not actually all that bloody, but almost every character involved in the fight against Thanos dies. Spider-Man, Iron Man, Wolverine, Thor, and many others are taken out with relative ease by the Mad Titan.

Many fans are expecting AVENGERS INFINITY WAR to play out much the same way. Judging from the official trailer, it already looks like a few heroes may be going down for the count. And, if you’ve either read about or managed to glimpse the D23 trailer, you’ll be able to guess the fate of a few other characters, as well.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone to see some of the heroes killed over the course of the film. Seeing some death in AVENGERS INFINITY WAR would probably be kind of refreshing, given the MCU’s slowly growing stagnancy. Seeing Thanos take down the heroes would be an impactful but welcome kick to the gut.

Is the Marvel Cinematic Universe Allergic to Therapy?

So, who might get the axe? Frankly, no one is safe from the might of Thanos. That being said, I’m going to go through a list of the main heroes and jot up the likelihood of said characters dying a painful and/or heroic death.

“This does put a smile on my face.”

Before we get to that, however, it’s important that I first note what I think will happen in AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR, in the general sense. It’s easy for me to go about predicting character deaths, but there needs to be a clear-cut reason why those deaths would happen in the first place.

AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR is going to be a film about Thanos winning. In no way is it going to be a good time for the Avengers themselves. By the end of the film, Thanos is going to have all the Infinity Stones, but even before that, he’s going to have caused a cacophonous amount of mayhem. The war in Wakanda will have crippled, if not killed, the heroes involved, and everyone else (Spider-Man, Iron Man, Doctor Strange, etc.) will likely have been fighting Thanos on that barren, wasteland looking planet (could it be a destroyed Xandar?).

Afterwards, I suspect the last few heroes remaining will meet up, formulate some kind of plan, talk about how hope hasn’t died, and prep themselves for whatever comes next in AVENGERS 4. It’s a crude, rudimentary guesstimate at the plot, I know, but it gets the idea across. AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR is going to be horrifically tragic for the good guys and go outstandingly well for the bad guys.

AVENGERS #675 Review: Is This Marvel’s 52?

With my somewhat comprehensible and totally speculative idea of the plot now in mind, let’s take a look at the possible AVENGERS INFINITY WAR deaths.

Tony Stark (Iron Man)

Of any of the characters in AVENGERS INFINITY WAR, death is almost certain for Tony Stark. In a way, it feels like the MCU has been building up to some dramatic event for Tony. Throughout the franchise, he’s had tons of compelling and impactful character progression.

There have been many signs pointing to Tony’s looming death. CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR pointed to a lot of this. Tony’s suffering from electromagnetic headaches, he apparently almost had a stroke or something, and now, he’s got the new Spider-Man to mentor.

When you take everything into account, Tony Stark’s life has been a bit of a mess, lately. He doesn’t seem particularly unhappy, but when you take all of these things into account, it feels like his character is building to the point of imminent destruction.

Once Thanos comes into the mix, Tony’s going to have his work cut out for him. If Thanos rips Tony from his armor and breaks him in half, I won’t be surprised in the slightest. If anything, I’d be surprised the filmmakers allowed something so violent.

Likelihood of death: Very Likely

Steve Rogers (Captain America)

Though, I suppose calling him Captain America doesn’t exactly work at the moment. Regardless, Steve’s life is just as messy as Tony’s right now, but in a bunch of different ways. The primary reason, of course, being that Steve’s still a fugitive at this point. He and his buddies are on the run from the law with the Sokovia Accords in place.

CAPTAIN AMERICA #700 is a Star-Spangled Milestone!

In terms of buildup, there hasn’t been much evidence pointing to Steve dying in AVENGERS INFINITY WAR. And when you look at the trailer, Steve’s not doing too poorly. I mean, yeah, he’s right smack-dab in the middle of the Wakanda fight, but he knows how to handle himself. And he’s got an army of Wakandans as well as several other heroes at his back. I have no doubt he’ll come out of that just fine.

As a whole, the potential for Steve’s death in AVENGERS INFINITY WAR seems less than the others. It’s more likely for him to die in AVENGERS 4 if anything. But even that is questionable. Steve is one of the guys I think will see all of this Infinity Stone business through to the end.

Likelihood of death: Unlikely

Thor, like Steve and Tony, has had a lot on his plate lately. He lost his hammer, his father died, and Asgard was destroyed. When we last saw him, Thor and the rest of the Asgardian people were sailing through space, only to be approached by a dark, mysterious ship. Most people have assumed the ship belongs to Thanos, and that it will destroy Thor’s ship, leading to Thor’s meeting with the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Though Thor’s life has been a bit tumultuous lately, he’s otherwise maintained his plucky, sometimes witless attitude. He’s finally managed to tap the true potential of his powers, as well, making him possibly more formidable than before. I don’t suspect it’ll save him from the wrath of Thanos, but hey, he can zap lightning any which way he chooses now.

Why Brian Michael Bendis Leaving Marvel Isn’t a Bad Thing

It’s tough to tell right now if Thor will be one of the AVENGERS INFINITY WAR deaths. Though he’ll meet up with the Guardians, there’s no telling how long he’ll be sticking with them. Whatever he’s doing in the trailer seems pretty distressful. Maybe he’s actually making a new hammer. I had imagined him getting a new hammer in AVENGERS 4, but if it happens in INFINITY WAR, it could be a fitting set-piece moment.

Overall, Thor’s fate seems uncertain. It could go either way for the God of Thunder. I suspect he’ll be okay, for the most part, in the battle against Thanos and his army. If he falls, though, it better be as epic as when Thor died during Jonathan Hickman’s AVENGERS.

Likelihood of death: Moderate

Bruce Banner (Hulk)

When we last saw Hulk, he was with Thor and company. Through whatever means, after Thanos undoubtedly attacks the Asgardian ship, Hulk will wind up back on Earth. Perhaps Loki will zap him back to Earth with the Tesseract. Whatever the reason, Hulk will somehow end up smashing through the roof of Doctor Strange’s Sanctum Sanctorum. Afterwards, he’ll team up with Tony and the Doctor, and later on, he’ll be present for the Wakanda battle.

Mark Ruffalo and Kevin Feige have spoken about a new Hulk story taking place over the course of the next few Marvel films. This started with THOR: RAGNAROK. It’ll be interesting to see how Banner’s story continues in AVENGERS INFINITY WAR. Overall, Banner has had a lot of meaningful character development as of late. Withstanding the odd relationship with Black Widow, Banner and Hulk have both individually grown as characters.

Given that Marvel Studios seems to want to put more emphasis on Banner and the Hulk as separate characters, I find it highly unlikely for Banner to be one of the AVENGERS INFINITY WAR deaths. The character is evolving from the poor, pitiable scientist to a more strong-willed person. And, given the Hulk is immensely strong, I’m not too worried about going toe-to-toe with Thanos.

It seems, though, that the Hulk will be sticking with the Earth-side team, fighting in the battle for Wakanda. I suspect a full-on fight between Hulk and Thanos will take place during AVENGERS 4. Until then, I’m fairly certain that Banner will be safe until AVENGERS 4.

Likelihood of death: Unlikely

Natasha Romanoff (Black Widow)

Everyone’s favorite triple-double agent is back, and she’s gone blonde this time around! The Black Widow, like many of the other MCU heroes, is now on the run after turning on Tony and T’Challa during CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR. As we all know from the AVENGERS INFINITY WAR trailer, Natasha will wind up fighting alongside Steve, T’Challa, and many others in the Wakanda battle.

Regarding recent events, we haven’t seen or heard from the Black Widow since CIVIL WAR. In the time since then, she’s apparently done a great job hiding from the authorities. Other than that, there’s not much to go on for her at the moment.

AGENTS OF SHIELD: Top 10 Chloe Bennet Episodes

In terms of possibly dying in AVENGERS INFINITY WAR, nothing is pointing to Natasha’s untimely demise, but it’s very possible. After all, she’s only human. She doesn’t have a super soldier serum pumping through her veins or a high-tech suit of armor. Granted, she’s never needed such things to kick ass, but given that the gang is up against Thanos this time around, Natasha’s training may be a bit outgunned.

If the Black Widow were to fall in AVENGERS INFINITY WAR, it wouldn’t come as a terrible surprise. Frankly, though, I’m not expecting it.

Likelihood of death: Unlikely

T’Challa (Black Panther)

The King of Wakanda will make a noticeable return in AVENGERS INFINITY WAR. The solo BLACK PANTHER film hasn’t arrived yet, but that doesn’t mean we can’t talk about the possibility of him joining the list of AVENGERS INFINITY WAR deaths.

T’Challa made an incredible debut during CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR. He proved just how incredibly capable he was, showed off his insane combat skills and the will to never give up, and also showed us that he is a truly honorable man.

Final BLACK PANTHER Trailer Dropped: It’s Everything We’ve Seen Before

I don’t expect T’Challa to have a dramatic near-death experience in AVENGERS INFINITY WAR. He’s vastly capable in both combat and tactics, and he has an entire nation at his back. T’Challa is also smart enough to know when he’s outmatched. I’m sure Black Panther will be in no relative danger throughout AVENGERS INFINITY WAR. You know, other than the massive battle at Wakanda.

Likelihood of death: Very Unlikely

Bucky Barnes (Winter Soldier)

Steve Rogers’ right-hand man will wake up from cryo-sleep just in time to join the gang for the fun-filled fight against Thanos! The Winter Soldier will return to the fight, armed with a new… arm, and his trusty rifle. Hopefully, he’ll be free of the Hydra mumbo-jumbo when he wakes up.

Bucky’s been put through the ringer since he fell off that train back in CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER. Being a secret Hydra assassin can’t be all that easy. I mean, sure, he was really good at it, but it couldn’t have been easy. And just look at Bucky now. He’s in terrible shape. He lost an arm, his head is filled with evil coding, and everyone wants him dead.

That being said, I don’t think we’ll have to count Bucky as one of the AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR deaths. He, like Steve, is a weathered soldier. Bucky’s been to hell and back at this point, too. Also, he can’t die, because he has to become the new Captain America at the end of AVENGERS 4. Bottom line, he’s probably safe.

Likelihood of death: Very Unlikely

3 BATMAN Animated Films to Look Forward to in 2018

Sam Wilson (Falcon)

Steve Rogers’ other right-hand man. This one comes with a kick-ass bird suit. Jokes aside, Falcon will join the team in Wakanda to repel Thanos’ forces.

Sam has also been on the run recently, no doubt sticking closely to Steve all the while. The two have proved strong allies, much like in the comics. When it comes to the looming fight against Thanos, I’m sure Sam will be fighting right beside Steve to the ever-possible bitter end.

Sam’s possible death is another one that wouldn’t come as a surprise, but it’s not particularly expected. Sam going down in battle would definitely come with an emotional kick to it. It would be very much like Coulson’s death, in that it edges the Avengers on to continue the fight. But, again, I’m not particularly expecting Falcon to go down during AVENGERS INFINITY WAR.

Likelihood of death: Moderate

Rhodey (War Machine)

After the events of CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR, Rhodey was left partially paralyzed. However, I’m pretty sure no one has expected that to last in a meaningful capacity because he’s best friends with Tony Stark. Obviously, Rhodey was going to be fine by the time AVENGERS INFINITY WAR came around.

At the end of the trailer, you can spot Rhodey flying into battle with the rest of the cast during the Wakanda fight. You know fully well that he’s gonna prove extremely useful in that fight, being able to take out numerous foes at once.

What THE PUNISHER Teaches Us About Gun Control

I’m sure there are some lingering effects of Rhodey’s paralysis, so I wouldn’t expect him to be delivering his A game. So, if Rhodey were to fall, it wouldn’t be surprising. But, like in the case of Falcon, it would likely be an impactful death. It would also be very fitting; the soldier falling in battle. It’s like he said in CIVIL WAR: any mission could be his last. I’m hopeful Rhodey makes it out of AVENGERS INFINITY WAR alive, but who knows.

Likelihood of death: Moderate

Peter Parker (Spider-Man)

Like Black Panther, the new Spider-Man made his amazing debut during CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR. His first solo film as a part of the MCU came out this past summer, and it was equally amazing! Now, he’ll be joining Tony and his team of Avengers in taking the fight to Thanos!

Since Peter’s new to the game, there’s not much prior evidence pointing to a potential death in AVENGERS INFINITY WAR. That idea is quickly thrown out the window. However, after watching the trailer, we know that Spider-Man will tangle with Thanos up-close. Judging from the booming chokeslam, I can’t imagine it’s going to go well for Spidey. Much as I love Spider-Man, I’m ashamed to admit he’s probably going to die.

I’m almost positive those shots of Tony looking all glum and such are moments of him hanging over Peter’s lifeless body. In the D23 trailer, there’s a shot of Peter lying on the ground and saying he’s sorry to Tony as if he had failed his mentor. As awesome as it is to have Spider-Man in the MCU, I’m wary of his looming death.

Likelihood of death: Very Likely

Exploring Peter Parker’s Responsibility in the SPIDER-MAN Films

Vision is one of the few heroes still on the side of the law after CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR. However, he and the Scarlet Witch are apparently living comfortably in a home of their own now. But how did they get to that point? We’ll likely find out during AVENGERS INFINITY WAR.

This one may seem obvious, but I think Vision’s fate is a bit more complicated. Yes, we all know Corvus Glaive is going to stab the Mind Stone out of Vision’s head. However, ranking Vision on the list of possible AVENGERS INFINITY WAR deaths may be a bit presumptuous.

It seems more reasonable for Vision to be taken out of commission after the Mind Stone is yanked from his forehead. The filmmakers are having fun developing Vision, so it seems unlikely they’d get rid of him altogether. Once the Stone is taken from Vision, his body will go offline.

Later on, the Avengers will find some new way to power him, and he’ll be back.

Likelihood of literal death: Unlikely

Wanda Maximoff (Scarlet Witch)

As previously mentioned, Wanda has recently started secretly living with Vision. Watching their relationship bloom is so cute. You can call it weird all you like, it’s still cute. They’re the two outcasts of the group. It makes perfect sense for them to be together. Not to mention, it’s comic accurate. Let it happen.

CALL ME BY YOUR NAME is a Transcendent Tale of Love and Meaning

Wanda, like many of the other heroes, has also been on the run from the law. It seems Vision is helping to keep her safe, though. The possible ramifications of this may or may not ever come to fruition. We’ll just have to wait and see.

We know Wanda will get tied up in the Vision’s fate as the Mind Stone is taken from him. However, there’s not much pointing to which team she’ll wind up with afterward. It seems like she’ll be staying on the run for most of AVENGERS INFINITY WAR. Perhaps by the end of the film, she’ll wind up with anyone who’s left.

I wouldn’t worry about her being one of the AVENGERS INFINITY WAR deaths, though.

Likelihood of death: Very Unlikely

Doctor Strange

It’s been an absolute pleasure to see Doctor Stephen Strange appear in the MCU. He brings a whole new dynamic to the franchise. It should certainly be fun to watch him casting spells alongside the rest of the Avengers.

Given that Strange will be fighting Thanos head-on, he’ll be facing the brunt of the danger. Of course, he’s got his crazy magic tricks and skills, but Thanos will have already had two of the Infinity Stones by then. Then again, Strange has an Infinity Stone of his own. The Eye of Agamotto, of course, is the Time Stone. We all know this. Hopefully, this will make Strange a bit more of a match for Thanos.

Some people are pushing around the theory of Strange reversing time once he sees his comrades fall in battle. By doing so, he could warn the Avengers of the threat before it happens, and they could better prepare themselves. I sincerely hope this doesn’t come to pass, as it’s extremely cheap. It’s not beyond Strange to try this strategy again, though, but if he does, Thanos would likely have enough power to break through the Time Stone’s influence. Afterwards, he would probably take it from Strange and kill him.

Best Anime of 2017: Alex Wong’s Top 7

Overall, things don’t look too good for Doctor Strange. We know Thanos and Strange will come face to face if Thanos wants the Time Stone. If Strange does somehow manage another time reversal trick, then I guess he might be safe. Barring that possibility, though, Doctor Strange looks to be in a heap of trouble.

Likelihood of death: Likely

The Guardians of the Galaxy

Last but not least, we have everyone’s favorite team of space-faring heroes! Of course, one of the biggest reveals of AVENGERS INFINITY WAR trailer was that the Guardians of the Galaxy would be joining the Avengers in the fight against Thanos!

For simplicity’s sake, I’m grouping all of the current Guardians together. We already know the team will be meeting Thor. From the D23 trailer, we know they’ll also be joining Tony and his team to take on Thanos on the wasteland planet.

Rocket and Groot are oddballs. Though Rocket can pack a hefty punch with his arsenal, it seems unlikely that it’ll handle well against the might of Thanos. Groot is likely to be safe, as he can already regrow himself naturally. The newest member of the team, Mantis, is likely in a bit of trouble here. She doesn’t seem to have much in the way of combat skills. Sadly, she might go down for the count in AVENGERS INFINITY WAR.

Drax has a personal agenda against Thanos, as he blames the Mad Titan for the deaths of his family. Drax is bound to get killed by throwing himself into a fight he cannot win. Gamora has the closest attachment to Thanos, being his daughter. I still wouldn’t expect him to show any kind of mercy to her during a fight. Star-Lord has a way of getting into trouble. Though he may valiantly throw himself into the fight to protect his friends, it may cost him in the end.

There is always the possibility that some of the Guardians manage to escape in the aftermath of the fight. It still seems likely, though, that some members of the team will fall in battle. As a whole, the fate of the Guardians of the Galaxy doesn’t look too good.

Likelihood of every member dying: Very Unlikely

Likelihood of some members dying: Very Likely

The Final Potential Death Tally

I suppose it’s not an exact count, but the number of possible AVENGERS INFINITY WAR deaths isn’t anything to laugh at. When you consider how many heroes are going up against Thanos and his army, seeing at least seven or eight of the heroes go down swinging would make for a highly dramatic turn of events.

This Is Everything You Need to Know About 2018 Comic Book Movies and TV Shows Coming Out

We don’t have too much information on Hawkeye or Ant-Man yet, so I left them off this list. I suspect they’ll play minor roles in AVENGERS INFINITY WAR, and show up to a larger capacity in AVENGERS 4. So, for the sake of my speculation, I’ll say they’re probably safe for the most part.

Overall, things are looking dour for the heroes. Thanos’ victory seems all but certain in AVENGERS INFINITY WAR. Once he’s got the full power of the Infinity Gauntlet, there’s no telling what kind of destruction he’ll bring to the MCU. We’ll just have to wait and see.

Although, now that I think about it, it really doesn’t matter who dies in AVENGERS INFINITY WAR. They’re probably all going to come back by the end of AVENGERS 4, anyway. Fingers crossed.

Be ready to assemble when AVENGERS INFINITY WAR hits theaters on May 4th, 2018!
