Usually this means glacial pacing or original endings. Like most anime these days, the MONOGATARI series originated as light novels. However, this anime’s actually struggling to keep up.Since the first novel’s release in 2005, author, Nisio Isin, has published over twenty more. It sounds like a lot, but he’s not done yet, as the twenty-third book will come out this July. The anime, through nine installments over six years, has only covered up to the sixteenth volume. The series premise is a blend of slice-of-life and fantasy, as part-vampire protagonist, Koyomi Araragi, encounters various people and oddities throughout his daily life. Each book contains a handful of character arcs, and each character arc centers on a single character and a certain supernatural force. Despite the supernatural presence in the series, MONOGATARI largely focuses on the characters’ growth over their given arcs. The anime series in particular is well-known for its irregular release schedule and inconsistent season lengths. Installments can range from four episodes to twenty-two. Some come out in weekly episodes over a television quarter; others release fully in a single day. As a result, no one really knows what to expect from upcoming installments. This uncertainty held true when, earlier this year, word came out that the tenth installment would release in the summer. However, for months afterwards, no further news arose. It does, however, keep in line with the MONOGATARI tradition of ignoring conventional release schedules. In September 2015, series producer, Atsuhiro Iwakami, stated that the scenario for OWARIMONOGATARI II was complete, but the production team was still deliberating how to best present it. Nearly two years later, we’ll finally get to see their decision on the matter. Hopefully, it will be well worth the wait, and I’m excited to see how a two-day broadcast will work out.OWARIMONOGATARI II will cover the events of the seventeenth novel.
