Yes, you read that right. The second season of ONE PUNCH MAN is coming soon, confirms VIZ Media on Twitter. Let the fist-pumping commence!

The Man, The Myth, The Legend

ONE PUNCH MAN is based on a manga originally written by ONE (MOB PSYCHO 100) and published in early 2009. In 2012, the manga was remade digitally by Yusuke Murata, and published on Shueisha Inc.’s Young Jump Web Comics website. The manga series quickly went viral, receiving about 7.9 million hits online, according to AnimeNewsNetwork. It is no surprise, then, that its anime adaptation has also become quite popular.

The series’s title character is an egg-headed hero named Saitama. His origin story is extraordinarily ordinary: he just wanted to be a hero “for fun.” In his bright yellow jumpsuit, white cape, and red rubber gloves, he kicks (or punches) major butt. His superpower? Being able to defeat any enemy with just one punch.

ONE PUNCH MAN’s first season covers Saitama’s journey in becoming so powerful. The action balances with a healthy dose of comedy, as we watch Saitama eventually grow bored with his superhuman strength. Everything about him screams “absurd,” but you can’t help but fall in love with those expressionless eyes and his glorious smile. Did we mention he was super powerful?

ONE PUNCH MAN Overview: Just. One. Punch.

The anime was first picked up and licensed by VIZ Media in 2016. ONE PUNCH MAN aired in English during the summer of that year on Adult Swim (Toonami) in the United States. Although a second season was planned and announced nearly two years ago, there hadn’t been any more developments from VIZ until now. As clarified in the news article on their official website, VIZ Media “has secured the master license” for the series’s second season. In addition, VIZ Media also mentioned that ONE PUNCH MAN “will be among the extensive catalog of brands VIZ Media will showcase at Licensing Expo 2018.”

Now What?

Unfortunately, VIZ Media doesn’t reveal much else about the upcoming season. What we do know, however, is that the studio behind the first season (Madhouse) will no longer be working on the series. Instead, it will be taken over by production company J.C. Staff. In addition, the series’s director will also change for the second season, and Chikara Sakurai (NARUTO, FOOD WARS!) will take over.

Otherwise, there’s not much else we know about this upcoming season. All we can do is find comfort in knowing that season two is underway. We can only hope that Saitama comes back stronger and classier than ever, with new, crazy adventures ahead of him. It’s only a matter of time before we get to see his cunning bald head again.
