Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on Google+ Share on Reddit Share on Pinterest Share on Linkedin Share on Tumblr AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR is just around the corner which means that many MCU characters already have one foot in the grave. Nonetheless, Marvel does want a continuing franchise, so it’s safe to say not every Avenger dies in INFINITY WAR. This list will rank the odds each Avenger dies in INFINITY WAR as well as its sequel, the untitled AVENGERS 4. Previously, ComicsVerse ranked a few heroes’ likelihoods to meet their demise in INFINITY WAR. This list is updated to consider the most recent information from the trailers, casting news, and set reports. Not only will this list include the Avengers but also the Wakandans, Guardians, and mystics that appear in AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR and AVENGERS 4. It is difficult to predict the plot of AVENGERS 4 so my odds cannot anticipate what will happen to the MCU characters’ in that movie too accurately. Simply this list will treat AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR and AVENGERS 4 as the same movie and see whether all of its characters can survive through both of them. Without further ado let’s predict if each Avenger dies in these films! AVENGERS INFINITY WAR: Which Heroes Will Meet Their Demise? No Chance In Hela T’Challa/Black Panther Odds This King Dies: 5,000 to 1 This one is actually quite simple. Disney and Marvel Like Money. BLACK PANTHER made all the money! Why would they kill off the lead character of their most successful solo film? No, T’Challa is safe because he needs to survive to bring in the cash for the sequel which Disney has already announced. Where Will Marvel Take The Black Panther Sequel? Peter Parker/Spider-Man Odds This Psuedo Avenger Dies = 4,500 to 1 Peter Parker is the youngest hero in the Avengers. Besides the fact that would be extremely cruel to kill off such a young, naïve hero, there’s also the fact that Sony needs Peter to stay alive for more sequels. Tom Holland has signed on to several more films for both Marvel and Sony. If Marvel killed off Spider-Man in INFINITY WAR, it would be depriving Sony of their most profitable character. It’s only been two years since Tom Holland was cast as Spider-Man. You better bet that Marvel and Sony are going to make all the money off their investment in this young Peter Parker. That means the chance this young Avenger dies is extremely low. Ned Leeds: Odds This Friend Dies = 4,000 to 1 Jacob Batalon’s Ned Leeds steals a lot of the best scene in SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING. While Marvel knows that they need to induce some darkness into their films, they still want to be a movie for the whole family. That means they are not in the business of killing kids. Especially ones as sweet and innocent as Ned. Marvel, you can’t kill Peter’s “Guy in The Chair!” Groot: Odds This Wooden Guardian Dies = 3,000 to 1 There are several reasons why Groot is the least likely Guardian to die. Firstly, he sells toys so he has as much likelihood of death as BB-8 in STAR WARS or Pikachu in POKEMON. Secondly, Groot has already died. Yes, this is a different “Groot” than his parent who sacrificed himself in the first GUARDIANS. However, it would simply be repetitive to have another Groot die in this film. Also, I’ll add that like Peter and Ned, this Groot is also a teenager and once again, Marvel doesn’t want to kill teens. Carol Danvers AKA Captain Marvel: Odds This Avenger Dies = 2,000 to 1 Captain Marvel, who is set to appear in AVENGERS 4, is the newest kid on the block. She is the first female Marvel hero to be the sole star of her own film. It’s likely that Captain Marvel will lead the Avengers in Phase 4. Add that to the fact that Marvel cast Brie Larson, an Oscar winner, to play Carol Danvers, and it would seem likely that Marvel will want to use Captain Marvel as a major character in the next decade of Marvel films. It is not likely this newest Avenger dies. MCU’s CAPTAIN MARVEL: What We Know So Far Plan For Sequels Mantis: Odds This Emotional Guardian Dies = 1,000 to 1 You could kill Mantis but why? What would be the reason to kill of Mantis in INFINITY WAR? We were just introduced to her last year in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2. While she does just seem like a great character, we literally just began to form a connection to her. Marvel hopefully learned from Quicksilver that you can’t expect an emotional reaction to a death if the movies didn’t spend the proper time developing the character. I expect that James Gunn has major plans for Mantis in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3, so he likely protests any plans to kill off Mantis… yet. Kraglin: Odds This Former Ravager Dies = 900 to 1 Exact same reasons as Mantis, except we had even less time to know Kraglin. His death would be a fantastic waste of time for INFINITY WAR. I expect that Kraglin’s screen time in both AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR and AVENGERS 4 will be minimal at most (if he even appears in both movies). That’s why if AVENGERS killed off Kraglin it would feel very random for the movie. Plus, Kraglin is played by Sean Gunn, James Gunn’s brother. I’m guessing that James Gunn wants his brother to appear in the final film in his trilogy. Stephen Strange AKA Doctor Strange: Odds The Sorcerer Supreme Dies = 800 to 1 Doctor Strange is going to be a crucial character in both AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR and AVENGERS 4. His knowledge of the mystic arts will be incredibly important in stopping Thanos. Furthermore, he possesses the Eye of Agamotto AKA the Time Stone which he can use to possibly restore the world after Thanos undoubtedly destroys much of it. Doctor Strange is bound for a few more sequels and with a bankable star like Benedict Cumberbatch, there’s little chance they’ll kill Stephen Strange now. Peter Quill AKA Star-Lord: Odds This Nostalgic Guardian Dies = 600 to 1 While the GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY films are an ensemble piece, they are also very much the story of Peter Quill. The first film was about Peter Quill reconciling himself with the death of his mother. The second film told the story of Peter meeting his father and accepting his new family. That is why Peter Quill will have to appear in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3. Chris Pratt is the face of those films and one of its main box office draws. I expect that GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3 will be Pratt’s final film in the Marvel Universe. Until then, he’s completely safe. Will the Guardians of the Galaxy Save The Marvel Universe In Infinity War? Shuri: Odds This Princess Dies = 400 to 1 Shuri probably won’t have a huge role in AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR or AVENGERS 4. Most likely her main role will be researching the Vision and his Mind Stone. Perhaps Shuri will be instrumental in saving Vision and allowing him to exist without the Stone. Besides that, I don’t think that Shuri will spend much time on the frontlines. Especially since she stole the hearts of many audience members in BLACK PANTHER, it’s highly likely she’ll be back for BLACK PANTHER 2! Rocket Racoon: Odds This Furry Guardian Dies = 350 to 1 Aw poor Rocket. Another misfit with a such a big heart. He’s had a tremendous arc throughout the GUARDIANS films and that arc would feel wasted if he was killed off at this juncture. Out of all the GUARDIANS, Rocket (and Groot) have the smallest connection to anything with Thanos. With that in consideration, it would feel misplaced to kill off the raccoon now. Hope Van Dyne AKA Wasp: Odds This Stinging Hero Dies = 200 to 1 Much like Captain Marvel, Wasp is a new hero in the MCU. She’s not likely to appear in AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR and she’ll probably only appear briefly in AVENGERS 4. She’s a hero who has a large future ahead of her especially if she’s a member of the new Avengers and whether there is a third film in the ANT-MAN franchise. ANT-MAN AND THE WASP: Thoughts for 2018 J.A.R.V.I.S.: Prepare My Parachutes Gamora: Odds This Sneaky Guardian Dies = 100 to 1 There are certain elements that could ostensibly put Gamora at risk in AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR. She’s supposed to have one of the largest roles out of any of the Guardians in this film. We’re largely getting her backstory and her confrontation with her adoptive father, Thanos. Gamora will probably face off with her father at some point in AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR and AVENGERS 4. Due to her being an essential member of the Guardians team, that fight is likely one she’ll walk away from. Perhaps in a moment of tenderness Thanos will actually spare his daughter. Or maybe Gamora will actually manage to defeat her father in the end. Nonetheless, we all want to see Gamora’s relationship with Starlord play out in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3. Those two deserve a fairytale ending. Natasha Romanoff AKA Black Widow: Odds The Sneaky Avenger Dies = 90 to 1 Black Widow’s survival depends on two major factors: firstly, it depends upon how far Scarlett Johansson and Marvel have come in negotiating an extension to her contract. It also depends on whether the BLACK WIDOW solo film is actually a prequel or whether it takes place after the events of INFINITY WAR. I expect since it will be difficult (though not impossible) to convincingly de-age Johansson that the BLACK WIDOW Film will take place in the present day. With the popularity of the character at an all-time high, it looks extremely unlikely that Black Widow will die in INFINITY WAR. Yet as a member of the original team, she should always be careful. Do We Need A Black Widow Solo Movie? Drax the Destroyer: Odds This Brawny Guardian Dies = 80 to 1 Out of the main GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY team, is the most likely to meet his demise. That doesn’t mean it is likely. Drax is being offered a chance at revenge against Thanos in AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR. No doubt it would be a good end to his character if he ended his arc by avenging the death of his family. I do not think that James Gunn would want to see Drax die in AVENGERS. As we see from GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2, James Gunn is exceptionally fond of Drax and his sense of humor. I really think all the main GUARDIANS team are set to survive into GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3. Only then, might Drax die. Sam Wilson AKA Falcon: Odds This Flying Avenger Dies = 75 to 1 Sam Wilson is a fantastic character who hasn’t gotten his due in films yet. With memorable appearances in two CAPTAIN AMERICA films and ANT-MAN (as well as a cameo in AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON), Falcon has definitely made a name for himself. However, the bromance between Cap and Falcon was partially left behind for the more popular bromance between Cap and Bucky. Falcon is still Cap’s best-unfrozen mate and Falcon is set to remain Cap’s ally throughout both AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR and AVENGERS 4. There is nothing truly keeping Marvel from killing Falcon as we don’t know of any announced films after AVENGERS 4 that he is set to appear in. Some argue that Falcon is likely to become the next Captain America. I see this as a possibility but a lot less of a likelihood than a Bucky Captain America. Simply, Falcon won’t die in the next AVENGERS films because the Russo brothers don’t like killing characters with unused potential. Falcon is a fantastic supporting character that no doubt they will use in future movies. M’Baku and Okoye: Odds These Fierce Wakandans Die: 70 to 1 Once again, I doubt Marvel will kill popular supporting characters in AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR. Especially when they can be used in upcoming films. M’Baku and Okoye are more at risk than Shuri since they will be fighting on the battlefield. However, that ensemble cast in BLACK PANTHER was one of the primary reasons for its appeal. M’Baku and Okoye were such standouts in that movie and if they die, it should be in the Ryan Coogler BLACK PANTHER sequel. BLACK PANTHER’s M’Baku and W’Kabi: Heroes of Their Wakanda Wong: Odds This Mystic Dies = 65 to 1 Similar to M’Baku and Okoye except that Wong will have a greater role in this film. Wong has been on all of the main posters and in both trailers for AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR. There is a chance that he will die but since he is a member of Doctor Strange’s ensemble it would seem unlikely. Especially after DOCTOR STRANGE killed off the Ancient One, the sequel will need someone with insider knowledge of sorcery. Wong will also be an important ally when Doctor Strange fights Mordo in DOCTOR STRANGE 2. Scott Lang AKA Ant-Man: Odds This Shrinking Hero Dies = 60 to 1 Aw, don’t kill Paul Rudd! He looks so happy just to be there. Scott Lang is the most affable semi-Avenger and it would break a lot of fans’ hearts if he were to die in either Avengers films. That looks unlikely since he’ll probably be sitting out most of AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR since he’s seemingly on the run in ANT-MAN AND THE WASP. He could die in AVENGERS 4 and Wasp could take over his franchise but that also seems unlikely. You can expect Ant-Man to appear in ANT-MAN 3. Valkyrie: Odds This Warrior Asgardian Dies = 55 to 1 Valkyrie is an interesting one. In any other circumstance, I’d say she would be more unlikely to die. However, she will be in the crosshairs of a major confrontation early in the film when Thanos attacks Thor’s ship. Once again, it’s likely Valkyrie will find a way to escape Thanos’ clutches but she’ll have to be crafty to do so. Perhaps Thanos will punch her to somewhere far off in the galaxy. Then she can reappear as a reinforcement in AVENGERS 4. Valkyrie’s chances of survival go up drastically if Thor and/or Loki die. Valkyrie will need to rule the Asgardians as she (and maybe Lady Sif wherever she is) is the last person who can do so. ComicsVerse Collab: The Powerful Women Of The MCU #WomensHistoryMonth Wanda Maximoff AKA Scarlet Witch: Odds This Magic Avenger Dies = 50 to 1 Scarlet Witch doesn’t have any films announced after AVENGERS 4, however, Elizabeth Olsen is a young, bankable star. Furthermore, her brother died just a few movies ago, so cut the woman some slack! Wanda has been seen slowly coming into her own over several films. We want to see her become the powerful hero we know from the comics. Wanda’s potential is endless! She could appear in DOCTOR STRANGE 2 similar to Black Widow appearing in WINTER SOLDIER. Perhaps when the X-Men enter the MCU, Wanda could meet her father Magneto. Perhaps the MCU has a HOUSE OF M storyline in the books. Wanda just has more potential that the Russo brothers would be remiss to waste here. Laura Barton: Odds This Wife of an Avenger Dies = 45 to 1 Hawkeye’s family looks set to make a reappearance in AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR. If this were the comics I’d say it was likely that Marvel would kill off Hawkeye’s family to give him further inspiration. Hell, they even did so in the ULTIMATES storyline. However, this is not the comics, this is the family-friendly MCU. It would be very cruel to kill off Hawkeye’s family in this film but it’s not impossible that they kill off Hawkeye’s wife, Laura Barton. It all depends on what direction Hawkeye’s enigmatic story goes. Bucky Barnes AKA Winter Soldier/White Wolf: Odds This Cyborg Dies = 40 to 1 The way Winter Soldier’s story is going it looks like it can only go in two directions: either Bucky must die, now redeemed for his murder of Tony’s parents, or Bucky must redeem himself by carrying on Cap’s legacy. I find the latter one much more likely, especially since Sebastian Stan is signed on for quite a few more films. Bucky Captain America looks every day more likely to be reality, and you can count me excited! What Will Happen To The Winter Soldier/Bucky Barnes In The MCU? James Rhodey AKA War Machine Odds This Sidekick Avenger Dies = 30 to 1 There is one thing saving War Machine from eating the dust this film and that is the fact that he was crippled in CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR. The Russo Brothers already teased fans with a possible War Machine death back then so it seems unlikely they would actually kill him off in INFINITY WAR. It’s much better if Marvel retires War Machine after this film. Then he has the option to return whenever we need him in the future. Perhaps he could tutor the next Iron Man in case they want to bring in Riri Williams or that kid from IRON MAN 3. Maria Hill: Odds This Deputy Director Dies = 20 to 1 Both Maria Hill and Nick Fury have been spotted on the set of AVENGERS 4. This is an exciting development because their reappearance evokes the early days of the MCU when these two featured more prominently. Both Hill and Fury appeared in CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER where they both nearly died. I could see Maria Hill sacrificing herself for the Avengers in this film. It would be a brave show of force from a S.H.I.E.L.D. ally of the superheroes and would go further in redeeming that organization after THE WINTER SOLDIER. With Hill’s death, the MCU could end their storylines surrounding S.H.I.E.L.D. and move onto other Marvel organizations. However, Hill is a useful character to have, simply as a government liaison with the Avengers. Especially since another member of S.H.I.E.L.D. is more likely to kick the bucket, I think Maria Hill might be safe, even if she shouldn’t get too comfortable. Say Hello To Quicksilver Thor: Odds This Thunderous Avenger Dies = 10 to 1 Now we’re getting to the heavy hitters. Thor is an incredibly popular character who has appeared in 5 films already in the MCU. We know that Chris Hemsworth’s contract is ending soon and obviously his trilogy, and much of his arc is complete. It’s easy to believe that Thor could die in AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR. However, Thor is less likely to die because there is still potential for his character. We know that Marvel hates to kill off characters unless they have to, and Chris Hemsworth has expressed interest in reprising the role with the new Taika Waititi humorous direction. It would seemingly undercut Thor’s arc if he died as soon as he became King of Asgard. No, hopefully, Thor will find a way to save his people and rule them in isolation on Earth. Nick Fury: Odds The S.H.I.E.L.D. Director Dies = 9 to 1 I found it exceedingly strange when Samuel L. Jackson claimed he would not be in AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR or AVENGERS 4. Especially after the Russo brothers worked so closely with Jackson in THE WINTER SOLDIER. Furthermore, the first INFINITY WAR trailer was organized around the “there was an idea” quote uttered famously by Fury. However, after a set photo leaked, we have near confirmation that Nick Fury will, in fact, appear at least in AVENGERS 4. It would be poetic if this is Fury’s swan song. He was the man who brought us into this greater world. It would be very symbolic if the great mentor of the Avengers died in this film. As we know from Obi-Wan Kenobi, Dumbledore, and Uncle Ben, our mentors cannot be there for us forever. Fury’s death, while sad, would usher in a new age of the Avengers. Clint Barton AKA Hawkeye/Ronin: Odds The Arrow Avenger Dies = 8 to 1 Yes, Hawkeye has been the character everyone has been eyeing for death for quite some time. Clint has no upcoming solo movie. He has a family which in any other movie seemingly marks him for death. He has the smallest group of fans so why not kill him off? The only reason I’d think that Marvel wouldn’t kill off Hawkeye at this point is it’s too obvious. In my opinion, Marvel has misused Hawkeye who is far more interesting and relatable in the comics. Marvel just needs to give Hawkeye some time to shine! Fingers crossed for a series on the upcoming Disney streaming service. Nebula: Odds This Space Assassin Dies = 7 to 1 Nebula, unlike her sister Gamora, is someone who is purely defined by her rage – primarily for her father Thanos. Her whole existence is now leading to her finding vengeance against her father which leads her down a dark path. In the comics, Nebula has a crucial part in stopping Thanos but at the cost of her life. I don’t see what more Marvel could do with Nebula’s character after INFINITY WAR so perhaps James Gunn would be alright with her staying out of GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3. Vision: Odds The Robotic Avenger Dies = 6 to 1 Vision, when you are literally wearing the MacGuffin that the main villain in the film is after, things do not look good for you. Yes, even in front of Hawkeye, Vision is wearing the most obvious redshirt at this point. I think it’s likely that Marvel will not kill off Vision yet since they’ve already telegraphed his demise in the trailers. Marvel loves to fake-out their audiences, so Vision actually has a fair chance of survival. Not one I’d want to bet on but let’s hope he and Scarlet Witch get their sweet Rom-Com movie in the future! Bruce Banner AKA Hulk: Odds The Strongest Avenger Dies = 5 to 1 Mark Ruffalo stated that he and Kevin Feige discussed a three-film Hulk arc starting in THOR: RAGNAROK and ending in AVENGERS 4. Does this end with Hulk’s demise at the end? Hard to say but Marvel has had a difficult time knowing what to do with the Hulk. Perhaps that will lead them to the decision to give him a heroic sendoff. Perhaps Hulk will reconcile his two halves before his final sacrifice. The Hulk: A Retrospective Speculation Of Bruce Banner Tony Stark AKA Iron Man: Odds The Smartest Avenger Dies = 4 to 1 Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark was the man who started the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Much like Fury, would it not be poetic to mark an end to this chapter of the universe by killing him off? Robert Downey Jr. is done with the MCU after AVENGERS 4 for now. That would suggest that Marvel could kill him off. Perhaps Marvel will not want to close the door on such a beloved character. Maybe they will want to leave it open for possible future movies? Nonetheless, with BLACK PANTHER crushing box office records, it doesn’t look like the MCU will need a Tony Stark anymore. As he said in AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON, INFINITY WAR represents “the end of the path [he] started us on.” Maybe it’s the end of Tony’s path as well. Steve Rogers AKA Captain America Odds This First Avenger Dies = 3 to 1 It breaks my heart, but Captain America is the hero with the highest percentage chance of demise. Many thought that Cap could have died in CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR judging by the story THE DEATH OF CAPTAIN AMERICA. However, the Russo Brothers opted to leave Captain America alive to fight another day. Captain America is a warden of freedom and heroism and so it’d be symbolical if he sacrificed himself for the planet he has sworn to protect against the greatest of tyrannies in Thanos. We also know that Chris Evans will probably not reprise the role of Captain America. Steve Rogers story feels mostly closed so this is the perfect time for other heroes to fill his shoes. I will not be surprised at all if the First Avenger dies in INFINITY WAR. You’ll always be my favorite hero though Cap! Pepper Potts: Odds The Fiancee of an Avenger Dies = 2.8 to 1 So, Gwyneth Paltrow is in INFINITY WAR, but she doesn’t (ostensibly) appear in the trailers. Does that mean she’s hidden for some reason? Or perhaps she is flying the Iron Man suit in the early New York sequence of the film. If that happens, Thanos will seemingly crush her which would lead Tony to be heartbroken. This would give Tony enough cause for revenge while also making the stakes in the movie quite high from an early point. Heimdall: Odds This All-Seeing Asgardian Dies = 2.5 to 1 Heimdall is also in INFINITY WAR but has been seemingly absent from the marketing campaign. He will also be in Thanos’ path when he intercepts Thor’s ship at the beginning of the movie. While Idris Elba’s name has some clout, Heimdall is not a very complicated character in the MCU. I see no reason why Thanos would not murder Heimdall the first chance that he got. Perhaps Heimdall is somehow important to Thanos’ plans but otherwise, Heimdall looks like a dead man. Loki: Odds This Mischevious Asgardian Dies = 2 to 1 Loki, have you ever heard of the Faustian bargain? Long story short, it stipulates to not make a deal with the devil. You made a mistake in AVENGERS when you trusted the Mad Titan to help you take over Earth. You also failed to get him any Infinity Stones so he’s not going to be very happy with you. Yes, you may deliver him the Tesseract but how happy will that make him in the long term? The one thing Loki can do is something crucial that saves the Avengers. Perhaps Loki has actually reconsidered his villainy and will work behind Thanos’ back to protect Earth. Even if this is the case, I don’t imagine a world where Thanos doesn’t learn of Loki’s treachery and doesn’t murder him. Will Loki’s Redemption Happen In INFINITY WAR? Thanos: Odds The Mad Titan Dies = 1.5 to 1 Yes, I actually don’t think it’s an inevitability that Thanos will die in AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR or AVENGERS 4. Simply if Thanos is going to be a truly tragic villain, it would feel wrong if the Avengers simply kill him at the end. Thanos has to learn that his way is wrong and learn to accept his own powerlessness. I see the ending of INFINITY GAUNTLET as a likely ending for Thanos. There he sees the error of his ways and retires to a simple life. However, if Thanos does kill a bunch of major characters, it’s going to be very difficult to forgive him. The Collector: Odds This Cosmic Entity Dies = 1.2 to 1 Benicio Del Toro’s The Collector will also appear in this film! In TV Spot we saw Thanos torture the Collector to find out the location of certain Infinity Stones. We know that a lot will happen in the first ten minutes of the movie so perhaps murdering The Collector is one of them. Even before Pepper dies this would be one way to establish Thanos as a threat like no other. The Collector’s not a character that will be needed in the MCU in the future so he is highly likely to be killed off in AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR.The Black Order: Odds Thanos’s Minions Die: 1.1 to 1 Okay, this may be kinda obvious, but if you aren’t going to kill the main baddie, you definitely will kill some of his henchmen. There’s nearly a 0% chance that all of the Black Order makes it out of AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR, let alone AVENGERS 4. Before any Avenger dies, I have my money on the fact that one of these sinister villains will not be walking away alive in INFINITY WAR. Make your lasting impression while you still can Black Order!
