Twentieth Century Fox Films finally released its much anticipated NEW MUTANTS trailer. Director Josh Boone promised a horror movie featuring young X-Men. The NEW MUTANTS trailer appears to deliver on that promise with full force.

In keeping with the horror motif of the film, Fox released the NEW MUTANTS trailer on Friday the 13th! Even cooler? NEW MUTANTS premieres on April 13, 2018! Anyone else starting to get the creeps with all these “13” references?

Who are the Characters in the NEW MUTANTS Trailer?

Illyana Rasputin/Magik, Dani Moonstar/Mirage, Sam Guthrie/Cannonball, Roberto Da Costa/Sunspot, and GAME OF THRONES‘ Maisie Williams (Arya Stark on GoT) will portray Rahne Sinclair/Wolfsbane.

According to the NEW MUTANTS trailer IMDB page, Fox already cast the roles of Reverend Craig, Sam Guthrie’s father, and Dr. Cecilia Reyes.

The trailer features characters from the X-Men comics spin-off NEW MUTANTS. The comic book, created by Chris Claremont and Bob McLeod, premiered in 1982 published by then named company Marvel Comics.

When Will Karma Appear?

The only character missing from the comic book in the movie is X’ian Coy Mahn, a Catholic Vietnamese lesbian woman trying to locate her missing younger twin siblings. X’ian Coy Mahn’s character has the codename Karma. Her mutant ability allows her to completely take over the minds of others. The comic books refer to Karma’s mutant power as possession.

It appears Illyana Rasputin, aka Magik, will replace Karma as a founding member of the New Mutants. In later comic book issues, team members like Amara Aquilla (Magma), Douglas Ramsey (Cypher), Warlock, James Proudstar (Warpath), and Tabitha Smith (Boom-Boom) add to the roster.

The Evolution of the X-Men Metaphor

One question fans of the comics constantly ask revolves around the metaphor of the X-Men as an oppressed peoples. People feel anxious to see how exactly this film will handle the X-Men metaphor in a setting comprised solely of teenagers as the main protagonists.

In conclusion, does the NEW MUTANTS trailer give you hope the film will extend the X-Men franchise into the next decade? Or will we end up scared for the wrong reasons? By the looks of the trailer, one thing people won’t feel about the film is neutral.
