A new trailer just came out for CAPTAIN MARVEL! There’s a lot to unpack, so here are the top 5 questions we have from the new CAPTAIN MARVEL trailer 2!

New CAPTAIN MARVEL Trailer: Is Annette Bening the Supreme Intelligence?

Perhaps our biggest question from CAPTAIN MARVEL trailer 2 is the identity of actress Annette Bening’s character.

She’s seen in the trailer talking to Carol, presumedly on the Kree homeworld of Hala. She tells Carol that her life began the day it nearly ended when her jet crashes. They found Carol with no memory, and they made her one of them. We get a shot of Kree blood being injected in Carol’s arm. Bening’s character continues:

“So you could live longer, stronger, SUPERIOR.”

The word “superior” is the potential clue as to who Bening might be. It’s not too far of a stretch to guess that she might be the Supreme Intelligence, the being in leadership over the Kree. The Supreme Intelligence is an amalgamation of the best and brightest minds of Kree past. Typically, the Supreme Intelligence in the comics is a ginormous green head in a big tank.

Bening as the Supreme Intelligence is perhaps a less extreme depiction, being a little more palatable for the mainstream audience. We’ll know for sure when the film releases in March.

New CAPTAIN MARVEL Trailer: Is SHIELD Compromised?

We’ve known from set photos that Ben Mendelsohn will be playing the leading Skrull on Earth, Talos. We also know that he will be taking the form of a SHIELD official. However, there are a few shots in the new Captain Marvel trailer that could indicate that the Skrulls have been within SHIELD for a much longer period prior to the events of the film.

One of the shots shows Ben Mendelsohn in human form with a group of armed agents storming into a hanger bay. The bay itself looks to be the same one that Carol and Fury exit in a quinjet in a previous shot. If both shots are from the same scene, and Talos and these agents are going after them, we could assume that these agents may very well be Skrulls as well. Furthermore, perhaps they’ve infiltrated SHIELD for a long time and Carol’s presence is threatening their plans. Earth is a planet of high interest for both the Kree and the Skrull in the comics, and a key staging area in their war. Infiltrating one of its most influential governments would make strategic sense on the Skulls’ part.

And speaking of the Kree-Skrull War…

New CAPTAIN MARVEL Trailer: The End of The Kree-Skrull War?

Near the end of the new CAPTAIN MARVEL trailer, we hear Talos saying that the war is just beginning. Carol responds:

“I’m not going to fight your war. I’m gonna end it.”

We then get the trailer’s most impressive sequence, with Carol going binary, power emanating from her as she flies through space, shooting energy blasts and destroying a fleet of enemy ships.

…she’s gonna kick the crap out of Thanos.

Moving on, if Carol were to effectively end the Kree-Skrull War by the film’s end, it would make logical sense. While the Kree are somewhat of a known entity, (Ronan, Inhumans, and the Kree we see in AGENTS OF SHIELD), we’ve heard no word of reference to the Skrulls at any point in the MCU thus far. This could potentially be because the bulk of the Skrull forces get eliminated by Captain Marvel in the ’90s, and gets kept under the radar by SHIELD.

Another option is that Captain Marvel’s actions don’t necessarily wipe out the Skrulls, but does encourage them to limit their exposure, going into hiding, waiting for a better time to strike, thus ending the war. It still leaves the possibility of seeing Skrulls down the line, perhaps in disguise as characters we know and love throughout the MCU as we’ve seen it. This path has way more intriguing and downright scary implications.

New CAPTAIN MARVEL Trailer: Was That the Psyche-Magnetron?

Does Carol still get her powers via the Psyche-Magnetron? In Captain Marvel’s comic origins, the Psyche-Magnetron is a device that the original Kree Captain Mar-Vell tried to secure from the evil Kree Yon-Rogg. Air Force pilot Carol Danvers got in the middle in their conflict. When the Psyche-Magnetron takes damage, Carol gets hit in the explosion. The machine explosion hybridizes her DNA with that of Mar-Vell’s, thus giving her powers.

Now, it looks like that origin could be slightly different. We now know that the Kree themselves give her Kree DNA after the accident, granting her long life and strength. (That long-life could be how she will look the same in AVENGERS 4, years after the events in this film set in the 9’90s) However, it could still be the Psyche-Magnetron that gives her those extra abilities, such as her ability to go binary.

The shot of her wearing her pilot jumpsuit and flying back, with blue energy surrounding her is all a good indicator that the Magnetron is part of her accident, giving her those unique powers.

New CAPTAIN MARVEL Trailer: Is Goose A Flerken?

Now, perhaps the most important question of all: Is Carol’s cat a Flerken?!

For the uninformed, Carol does have a cat in the comics. It’s name is Chewie. I suppose the change to Goose for the film is for an obligatory TOP GUN joke. It’s fine I guess, but Disney owns STAR WARS! Chewie would have been fine and great! Regardless, Carol discovers long after having her cat that her cat is not what it seems.

When Carol decides to take a tour with the Guardians of the Galaxy, she brings Chewie along with her. Rocket Raccoon then drops the bomb that her cat’s a Flerken, an alien race that has all the appearance of a normal house cat, and yet lays eggs, tentacles in it’s mouth, and best of all, a human’s intelligence. At first, Carol doesn’t believe Rocket. Then, after a while, Carol’s cat lays eggs: 117 of them. Yep, that’s a Flerken!

It’s unclear as to whether or not Goose (sigh) is indeed a Flerken. We see him at the very end, getting praise and love by none other than Nick Fury. Who knew Fury’s a cat person? I will say that Goose could very well have some prominence. He’s even going to have his own POP figure and Lego figure. With that kind of merch presence, Goose could very well be more than just a cute cat. There’s our top 5 questions from the new CAPTAIN MARVEL trailer 2.
