MADE IN ABYSS made waves last year when it won Anime of the Year at Crunchyroll’s second annual Anime Awards. If you missed the mysteries of the abyss or simply want to relive the magic for a second time, you’re in luck. Sentai Filmworks and Kadokawa Pictures are bringing the adventures of Riko and Reg to the big screen with MADE IN ABYSS: JOURNEY’S DAWN.

To celebrate the film, Sentai Filmworks hosted a star-studded red carpet premiere at Regal Cinema (LA Live) in downtown Los Angeles on March 15th. Walking the red carpet were special guests Masayuki Kojima (director), Kevin Penkin (composer), Hiromitsu Iijima (music producer), and Shimpei Yamashita (producer). Invited talent and selected press were also in attendance. Following the premiere was a Q&A with special guests and a glitzy after-party at the Ritz-Carlton (open bar, anyone?).

During the Q&A, Kojima and Yamashita revealed that the second film, WANDERING TWILIGHT, will cover episodes 9 through 14 of the anime, meaning the second film continues the story past the first season! The third film and sequel to the two-part compilation films was also announced last year and will be titled DAWN OF THE DEEP SOUL.

When asked about how the atmospheric score to MADE IN ABYSS took shape during the production process, Penkin said he was largely inspired by the concept art of the series and the art of the manga. Specifically, he drew inspiration from the sense of depth between the characters in the foreground and the landscape in the background and used that sense of depth to create the critically-acclaimed soundtrack to the series.

The first film of the two-part MADE IN ABYSS compendium will screen in theaters nationwide on March 20th (Japanese with English subtitles) and March 25th (English dub). For those of you wondering if the film is worth seeing if you’ve already watched the television series, the answer is yes. JOURNEY’S DAWN is a dynamic retelling of the first half of the TV series and features new animation that adds more and more layers to the mysteries of the never-ending abyss. To sweeten the deal, showings will also include behind-the-scenes footage, Japanese-created spots, and a reflection on how MADE IN ABYSS mirrors fairytales.

Tickets can be purchased at participating box offices or online at www.MadeInAbyssMovies.com or www.FathomEvents.com.
