Last month, we learned that Michael B. Jordan is a huge fan of anime. The BLACK PANTHER star came to defend himself when a Twitter user called him out for his love for anime and the fact that his parents currently live with him. Jordan responded immediately, saying, “First of All I’m 6ft and they live with ME, put some respeck on my name. LOL…aaaand goku & naruto are real ones ?? lol.” And when another user accused him of only watching mainstream anime like NARUTO and BLEACH, Jordan again went on the defense, tweeting, “Nah that was a softball for the anime uneducated ?.” This month, it seems like we have another A-List celebrity joining the ranks of anime fans, Kim Kardashian.

Michael B. Jordan: Prince of Wakanda and… Anime Fan?

Kim Kardashian is your Classic Anime Protagonist

If you haven’t seen, the beauty/reality star dyed her hair a light shade of bubblegum pink this past week in honor of her trip to Japan with her husband, Kanye West. On Wednesday, February 28th, Twitter user @kimyonceee tweeted, “YES she literally looks like an anime character with the pink hair and funky fits!” Kardashian responded, “I am obsessed with anime. That was legit my inspo.” You can check out the interaction below:

But it doesn’t end there. That following Sunday, Kim Kardashian posted art of Zero Two from DARLING IN THE FRANXX. The image features Zero Two in uniform. The caption below reads, “My hair inspo.”

If you aren’t familiar, DARLING IN THE FRANXX is a 2018 winter anime by Studio Trigger following the life of young mecha pilots. In this post-apocalyptic world, children protect the world against Klaxosaurs, which are essentially giant monsters. Zero Two, the character Kim Kardashian got her hair inspiration from, pilots the strongest mecha, Strelizia. DARLING IN THE FRANXX has some obvious sexual undertones. With all of this in mind, it’s even more surprising that Kim Kardashian would watch this show.

A Family that Watches Anime Together, Stays Together

While it might be a bit jarring to learn that Kim Kardashian watches anime, let’s not forget that she is married to a huge anime fan. Kanye West is an AKIRA fan and has brought it up a few times. His “Stronger” music video gives off some serious AKIRA vibes. Takashi Murakami, a Japanese contemporary artist directed and produced his 2007 “Good Morning” music video. Murakami’s work has been in the Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art, the Palace of Versailles, and Grand Central Station. It’s no doubt that Kim got into this show because of her husband.

For the longest time, many anime fans have felt isolated in the passion. Even now, not a lot of people are open to the idea of watching and enjoying anime. As more celebrities come out, I hope it starts to erase some of the stigma and negative connotations surrounding Western anime viewers. Until then, Kim, if you want more anime recommendations, especially ones you can enjoy with your kids, hit me up!
