During Microsoft’s E3 2018 press conference, Bandai Namco surprised us with the upcoming fighting game, JUMP FORCE. The arena brawler is an ultimate crossover of characters, straight from the worlds of Shonen Jump manga magazine. The game’s latest trailer features a handful of familiar faces, including characters from NARUTO, DRAGON BALL, ONE PIECE, and DEATH NOTE. Check out the short trailer below!

Character Roster and Gameplay

The surprise trailer opens with familiar imagery of different manga universes. Right off the bat, we see that the game takes on a more hyper-realistic 3D visual style. An epic voice-over describes how these universes once existed separatelybut now, “things have changed.” We’re then transported to a city on Earth that appears to be in shambles.

In order of appearance, we immediately recognize our “heroes”—Naruto Uzumaki of NARUTO: SHIPPUDEN, Monkey D. Luffy of ONE PIECE, and Goku of DRAGON BALL Z. They all unite against the one villain in the scene: Frieza. We then get a glimpse of each of our heroes kicking Frieza’s butt, while also showcasing their special powers. And right when we thought the awesomeness was over, after the game’s title card, we spot DEATH NOTE characters Ryuk and Light Yagami watching over the chaos.

Additionally, in a gameplay demo with IGN, we see more of how the game works. Nakajima describes it as a “3-on-3 action fighting game.” The stages look pretty expansive and destructible, and characters seem to have free-rein of the space. As for the character roster itself, we are kept in the dark about how extensive it’ll be. However, it’s noted that DEATH NOTE characters will not actually be playable, and are simply meant to set up the game’s story. On that note, we can expect the game to have quite the plot!

Shonen Jump Celebrates 50 Years

In IGN’s interview with producer Koji Nakajima, he explains that the game is in celebration of Shonen Jump’s 50th anniversary. Recognized as one of the longest-running and best-selling manga magazines, Shonen Jump released its first issue on August 1, 1968. The weekly magazine has been home to many popular manga titles, such as NARUTO, MY HERO ACADEMIA, and FOOD WARS! to name a few.

Distributed by Viz Media, the shonen manga anthology debuted in North America in 2002. The North American version of the magazine was revamped for English readers and was made into a monthly publication. Viz Media released its final print publication in March 2012, just a few months after the launch of its digital successor, Weekly Shonen Jump. Reverted to a weekly publication, the digital magazine is still ongoing today, alongside its Japanese parent magazine.

JUMP FORCE is coming soon in 2019

Although Shonen Jump will be celebrating its 50th anniversary in August of this year, the game won’t be available until sometime next year. Nevertheless, the game will be available for Xbox One, Playstation 4, and PC consoles. Until then, all we can do is keep our eyes peeled for updates!

What do you think about JUMP FORCE? How do you feel about its hyper-realistic visual style? Are there any specific Shonen Jump characters you’d like to see in this crossover? Let us know in the comments below!
