You may think you know the entire history of the DCU. However, Oscar-winning screenwriter John Ridley (12 YEARS A SLAVE, LET IT FALL) is about to tell you otherwise. For, DC announced today that this legendary writer would be at the helm of THE OTHER HISTORY OF THE DC UNIVERSE.

A New Look at Some Old Stories

This comic miniseries will explore the legends and stories we think we know from a new perspective. The tales promise to illuminate the points of view of characters who are part of marginalized communities. The book boasts following characters of many different backgrounds, from John Stewart to Rene Montoya to Supergirl.

But this miniseries’ primary focuses is on human stories and real-world issues rather than world-ending phenomena. Ridley is more focused on the people behind the costumes, both as individuals and as members of their communities.

“I could not be more excited by the opportunity to excavate the canon of the DC Universe through a vast array of characters who’ve earned their seat at the table,” explains Ridley in a press release.

“I’m very impressed with DC’s commitment to making their history as reverent and urgent as it is engaging and entertaining for all its many fans.”

Ridley will be attending the DC in DC convention this weekend, where he’ll be discussing this new project. If you’re there, make sure you catch the panel he’s a part of — “The Many Shades of Heroism: DC Heroes Through the African-American Lens.” You can also see it by watching the live stream on Saturday, January 13, at 11 a.m. ET on the DC YouTube channel.

THE OTHER HISTORY OF THE DC UNIVERSE is expected to come out in the winter of 2018. It’ll release once Ridley’s current Vertigo project —THE AMERICAN WAY: THOSE ABOVE AND THOSE BELOW — concludes.
