On September 5, 2017, Lucasfilm announced that director Colin Trevorrow would no longer direct the last installment of the new Star Wars trilogy. Instead, J.J. Abrams has been chosen to direct EPISODE IX. Lucasfilm released this statement through starwars.com:

“Lucasfilm and Colin Trevorrow have mutually decided to part ways on ‘STAR WARS: EPISODE IX,’” the report said.

“Colin has been a wonderful collaborator throughout the development process, but we have all concluded that our vision for the project differ. We wish Colin the best and will be sharing more information about the film soon.”

Why Colin Trevorrow Was Fired

No official news was released on why the decision was made, but there are certainly a few theories that could suggest as reasons. Colin Trevorrow was the director of the hugely successful JURASSIC WORLD, so of course, Lucasfilm would want him to direct one of the STAR WARS movies.

After JURASSIC WORLD, Trevorrow came out with THE BOOK OF HENRY. The first theory is that after Trevorrow’s THE BOOK OF HENRY came out, Lucasfilm got scared. THE BOOK OF HENRY was critically panned and a commercial disaster. After reviews came out, there were rumors that Kathleen Kennedy was going to fire Trevorrow immediately.

The other theory that has been made public was that Trevorrow was difficult to work with. “[Trevorrow] was unbearable. He had an egotistical point of view — and he was always asserting that” said an anonymous Hollywood insider, according to an article from Vulture.com. The article went on to state:

“Then, during pre-production on EPISODE IX, Trevorrow’s relationship with Lucasfilm top brass became reportedly ‘unmanageable’ over the course of ‘repeated stabs at multiple drafts’ of the script.”

It was probably Trevorrow’s confidence that blocked Kennedy from revising the script, causing her to fire him eventually. Again, this is just speculation though, as nothing has been made official.

Rian Johnson Rumors

After this announcement was made, rumors were cast stating Rian Johnson was going to direct STAR WARS: EPISODE IX. Rian Johnson is the director for STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI, which is scheduled to come out December 15 of this year. Johnson has heard of these reports and revealed during a press conference in Japan his thoughts on the rumors:

“It was never in the plan for me to direct Episode IX, so I don’t know what’s going to happen with it. For me, I was entirely focused on EPISODE VIII and having this experience. Now I’m just thinking about putting the movie out there and seeing how audiences respond to it. So no, I’m not thinking about that right now.”

He continued saying, “Whoever does it, I’m going to be excited to be an audience member again, and to sit down and see what the next filmmaker has to show us and where this story ends up going.”

J. J. Abrams Returns

J.J. Abrams

On September 12, 2017, Lucasfilm finally announced that J.J. Abrams is to write and direct STAR WARS: EPISODE IX. Abrams relaunched the Star Wars universe with STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS, so it is touching that he will get to finish the new trilogy with EPISODE IX. Chris Terrio will co-write the movie. Chris Terrio is known for writing BATMAN V. SUPERMAN, JUSTICE LEAGUE, and ARGO.

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy provided this statement on the return of J.J. Abrams: “With The Force Awakens, J.J. delivered everything we could hope for, and I am so excited that he is coming back to close out his trilogy.”

Why J.J. Abrams IS The Right Choice

On December 18, 2015, the world was introduced to brand new characters and mysteries in the Star Wars universe. Questions were proposed, but none of them have been answered yet. While STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI may respond to some of those questions, there will most likely be some that have to be answered in Episode IX.  J.J. Abrams did great with STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS. He was able to mix the feel of the old trilogy with new characters, new mysteries, and new stories.

Kathleen Kennedy has a certain vision for this new trilogy, and if anyone can help her bring her vision to life, it would be J.J. Abrams. The two seem to work well together, and Lucasfilm is grateful for what J.J. Abrams has brought to the Star Wars Universe. While the date for EPISODE IX has been pushed back to December 20, 2019, that does not mean the movie is at a horrible development stage. It only means that Lucasfilm is making sure they provide the best possible film they can.
