The anime film I WANT TO EAT YOUR PANCREAS has released some new promotional material to get fans excited, including an updated trailer and some new images of our main characters!

On July 15, the upcoming film released a new official trailer featuring its opening song, “Fanfare,” and its main theme, “The Four Seasons,” both by pop-rock group SUMIKA. The group’s upbeat brand of pop music is sure to give the film a happy-go-lucky tone. In fact, it seems to fit perfectly with the personality of Sakura, one of the main characters. Check out the official new trailer below:

Additionally, the film’s official twitter released the main key visual, featuring the main characters. The visuals feature our main protagonist, a nameless high school student, and Sakura Yamauchi, the popular girl in school. The poster for I WANT TO EAT YOUR PANCREAS depicts the pair standing back to back. The words in Japanese translate to “Memories of my spring. Memories of her lifetime.”

The film releases in Japan on September 1. Aniplex of America announced they will distribute the film in the United States, although a concrete date for this release is not yet confirmed.

This film is an adaptation of the award-winning novel of the same name written by Yoru Sumino. Shinichiro Ushijima, who worked on HUNTER X HUNTER, makes his directorial debut with this movie. Ushijima will also write the screenplay for the film.

He has quite a task ahead of him. Not only is this a very highly anticipated film, but the subject matter is far from lighthearted. Indeed, for a film with such a strange title, the subject matter is pretty heavy. The story is that of an unassuming, unnamed high schooler, who finds a book one day called, “Living With Dying.” Once he reads the book, he discovers it is the secret journal of Sakura Yamauchi, a popular girl in his class. The diary contains her reflections about the time she has left to live. It turns out she has a secret that now only one person outside her immediate family knows — she is dying of a pancreatic illness.

After Sakura confides in the protagonist about her illness, he swears not to tell anyone her secret. Though the two have very different personalities, this shared secret brings them closer together. Even though they make an unlikely pair, they come to spend more and more time together in the aftermath of this discovery.

Will This Story Translate well as an Anime?

For those wondering if this highly successful novel can be turned into a highly successful movie, I have news for you. The answer is 100% yes. I WANT TO EAT YOUR PANCREAS has, in fact, already been made into a film: a live-action version that was released in 2017. In addition to being a commercial success, the live-action film earned many Japan Academy Award nominations. This includes Picture of the Year and Best Screenplay. This success has no doubt driven VOLN studio into financing this anime adaptation.

The pressure is on Ushijima and his staff to see that this adaptation reaches the heights that we’ve already seen this story is capable of. Will the third adaptation of this story prove to be too much? Or will the success of the previous versions fuel another box office blockbuster? Will we have a challenger for YOUR NAME? We’ll know for sure come September, one way or another.

As for when we will get the film here in the US, stay tuned for updates.
