Fun for All!

As children, my twin sister and I spent countless hours playing games about animal care. It was such a big part of our childhood that my sister is currently in school studying to become a veterinarian! When I told her about Sam Davies’ magical new comic HEX VET: WITCHES IN TRAINING, she said, “I think all creatures are magical and I love treating them,” and added that “magic would make it easier!” Boom Studios’ HEX VET is an uproariously fun comic for anyone who eagerly sees the magic in all living things.

A Magical Adventure

Davies cleverly combines the potentials of witchcraft with the beloved subject of animal medicine. However, Davies also knows that vet school isn’t easy – even for the magically gifted! Learning to be a successful Hex Vet takes time, energy, and diligent focus. In Davies’ magical universe, Dr. Cornelia Talon of the Willows Whisper Veterinarian Practice helps shape the bright young minds of Clarion Wellspring and Annette “Nan” Artifice. The two vets in training couldn’t be more different. While Clarion lovingly greets each visiting patient every day (by name), Nan squeezes studying into every possible minute and is the opposite of friendly. Their dynamic is tense and worsened yet by their day’s assignments: Nan to the front desk and Clarion to the basement. When the two are suddenly left in charge of the whole practice, they must work together to help a cursed magical rabbit.

My soon-to-be-vet sister says that vet training takes brains and heart. Davies’ comic proves that vet witch training is no different! Luckily, Clarion and Annette have both in spades. In HEX VET, the two learn to follow their magical instincts and put animals first. Davies’ writing is humorous and kindhearted, highlighting the young vets’ personalities and enticing readers with bright illustrations.

Care for Magical Creatures?

One of the highlights of HEX VET is Davies’ brilliant illustrations of magical animals. For example, Davies skillfully depicts everything from a griffin and a three-eyed black cat to an enchanted rabbit and the terrifyingly cute Bugbear (or “ursa insectus vulgaris” as Dr. Talon puts it). For those of us who wanted to take Hagrid’s “Care for Magical Creatures” class in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series, HEX VET is similarly thrilling.

Although HEX VET more readily appeals to a younger audience, there is no doubt older readers will enjoy the sweet enthusiasm of Davies’ illustrations and writing. Even the nightmarish Bugbear can’t help but be cute with its large eyes. Similarly, Clarion and Nan’s character design will immediately win the hearts of STEVEN UNIVERSE fans. The bright colors, expressive faces, and joyful movements all evoke the charming work of Rebecca Sugar, who created STEVEN UNIVERSE.

Silly and Sweet HEX VET: WITCHES IN TRAINING

HEX VET is often silly, but the comic addresses themes of self-acceptance, hard work, and bravery in every day life. BOOM! Studios gives readers a wide array of positive representation, and HEX VET is no exception. Importantly, the diverse protagonists show young readers that the medical field isn’t just for white cis men. Moreover, both young vets realize the value of cooperation and going the extra mile to solve a problem. Indeed, in HEX VET, Clarion and Nan must think outside the box in order to solve the problems they face.

HEX VET: WITCHES IN TRAINING provides bursts of character development, and the comic flies by. Hopefully this isn’t the last readers will see of Clarion and Nan. Indeed, the comic feels open to many possible and magical adventures yet to come.

HEX VET: WITCHES IN TRAINING is available here starting December 12, 2018.
