The storm being the massive confrontation that is sure to come between the Sinestro Corps and the recently returned Green Lantern Corps. Previously in HAL JORDAN AND THE GREEN LANTERN CORPS #4, the Sinestro Corps captured Green Lanterns Guy Gardner and Hal Jordan and had planned on bringing them both to Sinestro. He was excited for Jordan’s arrival, but only got Gardner instead. Hal was saved by Sinestro’s daughter, Soranik. Meanwhile, the Green Lantern Corps, led by John Stewart, were waiting in the shadows for Guy to return from his reconnaissance mission. Robert Venditti begins HAL JORDAN AND THE GREEN LANTERN CORPS #5 with an incredible contrast between Guy Gardner and Hal Jordan. Gardner is being tortured in Sinestro’s fear machine while Jordan is healing from Soranik’s surgery. This offers a look into what could have been for Jordan if Soranik did not save him from the Sinestro Corps. Most of this occurs in the first half of the issue, and the rest centers on the Green Lantern Corps. The Green Lanterns decide to go find Gardner, and they’re ready to fight anyone and anything that they come across in their rescue mission. With Stewart feeling guilty for sending Gardner on a mission, the search for Guy is a great reason for the Green Lantern Corps to finally reveal themselves to the universe and show everyone they’re back. HAL JORDAN AND THE GREEN LANTERN CORPS #5 seems to build up the story for the impending battle between the Sinestro Corps and the Green Lantern Corps. There is little characterization in the issue as it seems like all of the characters are just preparing to collide with each other. The only exception is Hal Jordan. While he is resting up so that he can heal post-surgery, he reveals to Soranik that he has somehow become more connected with the emotion of willpower. The extent of his connection is unknown as of now, but it is the reason he was able to forge his own green power ring. This new realization is an intriguing character development for Jordan. Throughout his existence since Geoff John’s run on GREEN LANTERNS, Jordan has been getting increasingly stronger, and this could make him on par with the Guardians. The Green Lantern titles have always had a large cast of character that all look different since they are all from different planets. Van Sciver takes advantage of the different characters and makes them all look impressively unique and beautiful. Also, he is able to capture the emotion very well on the character’s faces. He makes it obvious that Gardner is in a large amount of pain, while Jordan is surprised at his situation and the fact that Soranik is a member of the Sinestro Corps. Overall, HAL JORDAN AND THE GREEN LANTERN CORPS #5 brings a lot of anticipation for the impending confrontation between the Green Lantern Corps and the Sinestro Corps. The Green Lantern Corps wants Gardner back and they want to stop Sinestro. Hal Jordan also wants to stop Sinestro and his abductions of innocent people (and aliens). The war is coming, and it can’t come any sooner!
