HAIKYU!!, one of the most well crafted shonen anime of all time, is coming to a theater near you! As many anime fans know, sports series have a special place of favor in watcher’s hearts. Following the US premiere of BUNGO STRAY DOGS: DEAD APPLE, Crunchyroll Movie Night is bringing  HAIKYU!! THE MOVIE: BATTLE OF CONCEPTS to the silver screen.

There’s a reason why popular shonen anime and manga series all tend to involve superpowers. By providing a window into a fantasy world much different from our own, a series becomes compelling. However, sports anime, being about somewhat conventional things, have a steeper hill to climb. For one, they have to be more interesting than real life sports programming. In addition, they have to create solid characters since their conceptual basis is just athletics.

This is why HAIKYU!! was and is such an impressive anime. Of all sports anime, it is one of if not the absolute best. For those unfamiliar, HAIKYU!! follows high school student Shoyo Hinata in his journey to become an amazing volleyball player after watching the “Little Giant” score at Nationals. He joins Karasuno High School, the Little Giant’s alma mater, in an effort of reliving the player’s steps and becoming an ace middle blocker.

Meanwhile, Tobio Kageyama was an ace setter in middle school, but due to his intolerable personality, he lost the support of his team. He joins Karasuno’s team after the best school in the prefecture rejects his application. However, Karasuno’s days of glory are over and the team hasn’t made it to Nationals since the Little Giant’s time. But with Kageyama, Hinata, and a new coach on their side, they just might turn the tide.

HAIKYU!! Hits the Silver Screen!

HAIKYU!! THE MOVIE: BATTLE OF CONCEPTS is adapted from the third season of the anime series. The film is a compilation focusing on the Karasuno High Boys’ volleyball team fight for a spot at nationals. At this point, the competitive volleyball world knowns Hinata and his team as “The Fallen Champions.” As the nickname suggests, they have a major bar to cross in order to prove they’re worth their snuff. In their journey to be the top team, Karasuno will have to beat back Shitatorizawa High, the current league powerhouse. The movie will follow Hinata as he attempts to fulfill his promise to defeat Wakatoshi Ushijima’s team. You can check out HAIKYU!! in action in the trailer below, courtesy of Crunchyroll.

The trailer shows off the quick moving fluid action of HAIKYU!!. This is one of the most recognizable aspects of the series. Besides the strong characterization and plot focus of the series, “action” is solid. Rather than a constant slugfest of satisfying blows, HAIKYU!! is a series of exchanges. Each serve, volley, spike, and return is accentuated with careful perspective adjustment and intermingling of slow and quick motion. As a result, this anime captures an immersive feeling within volleyball that’s impossible to get watching sports normally. Similarly, its characters have more to them than just athleticism.

Now, for us US viewers, Crunchyroll is providing us with an amazingly convenient way to buy tickets for the film’s showings.
