Jared Leto Joker Film

Recently, Warner Bros. announced that Jared Leto’s Joker will be getting his own film. According to Variety, this will be part of a series of films branching off from 2016’s SUICIDE SQUAD, such as the previously announced BIRDS OF PREY film in development where Margot Robbie will return as Harley Quinn.

Some may see this as an odd choice on Warner Bros. part, as an origin story for the Joker without Leto is still in development. This means that we have two Joker films on the table, one that is a part of the DCEU continuity, and the origin film that won’t be. Potentially, this could create some consumer confusion.

Furthermore, many feel as though Jared Leto’s depiction of Joker was less than desirable. However several of Leto’s scenes were cut from the film’s final release. This makes it incredibly difficult to judge Leto’s performance as a whole. This film would give Leto more time and a better opportunity to show better character development and dimension for his Joker.

We still know nothing about the plot. There have been reports that Leto will not only star in the film but also executive produce.

Suicide Squad Writer Announcement

Todd Stashwick

Speaking of SUICIDE SQUAD, it’s been reported that writer/actor Todd Stashwick will help co-write the SUICIDE SQUAD script with director Gavin O’Connor and David Bar Katz. What’s interesting is that Stashwick has had experience with the DC universe before as an actor. On Fox’s GOTHAM, Stashwick played Richard Sionis, the father of the man who becomes Black Mask.

However, Stashwick has a pretty decent career as a writer. He has written scripts for Syfy as well as for an upcoming EA/Lucasfilm for a Star Wars video game. Stashwick has worked with O’Connor before on JANE GOT A GUN, which is why O’Connor approached him to help write the script.

During this announcement, Stashwick spoke to his love of DC universe. Having a writer who has a passion for the universe on the project will be a really good thing.

Titans to Feature Red Hood, Possibly Superboy

Set photos from the TITANS production have revealed the first look at actor Curran Walters as Jason Todd, the second Robin under Batman.

It’s still unclear as to what season of life Todd will be in. He could still be serving as Robin, while Dick Grayson, the first Robin, is leading the Titans determining to go his own path but not yet taking on the Nightwing name. However, it does seem more likely that Todd will an antagonist, leading life as the vicious vigilante Red Hood. As the Red Hood, Jason has no problem with taking lives. Because of this, he often estranges himself from Batman and the rest of the Bat-Family.

Here Is Everything You Need To Know About DC UNIVERSE

Also, casting rumors suggest that the TITANS production is looking for someone to potentially take the role of Superboy! Combining this rumor with the knowledge that Gotham City, Batman villains, Doom Patrol, as well as Jason Todd will all be featured, and TITANS is shaping up to be a pretty awesome show. Any more news like this, and we could consider TITANS as a live-action YOUNG JUSTICE show!

TITANS is set to air on the DC Universe Streaming Service.

Keiynan Lonsdale Leaves THE FLASH and LEGENDS OF TOMORROW as Series Regular

In sadder news, it has been announced that Keiynan Lonsdale (Wally West AKA Kid Flash in LEGENDS OF TOMORROW and THE FLASH), will appear in the season five premiere of THE FLASH and then no longer be a series regular on either series. The news surprised many fans after Wally West recently became an integral part of The Legends team. Lonsdale clarified on Twitter:

“It’s definitely not a total goodbye or ‘see ya never’ situation, cause Wally West will still be around when you need him the most! 🙂 It’s just that it won’t be full time anymore.”

It sounds like Lonsdale may want to challenge himself with other projects. However, he’s not opposed at all to reappearing as Wally West in the future. Don’t be surprised if Lonsdale returns as a regular to the show much as Colton Haynes is returning as a regular on ARROW Season 7. Lonsdale is such an important part of THE FLASH family. It will be interesting to see who fills that gap left behind by the amazing Wally West.

WONDER WOMAN 84 Announcements

DC Fans have become flooded with news about Wonder Woman, titled WONDER WOMAN 84. Patty Jenkins teased a retro poster for the film. The poster was fascinating in that it did not allude to a fun 80s nostalgia vibe. Instead, the image elicits a Cold War paranoia tone.

Many have speculated that the 84 in the title will likely refer to 1984, the book by George Orwell. There will definitely be some political element to the film. Gal Gadot has revealed that much of the film will take place in Washington D.C. Gadot shared a video demonstrating some of the sites that may appear in WONDER WOMAN 84.

WONDER WOMAN took many elements similar to CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER. It looks like WONDER WOMAN 84 will take the governmental thriller element from CAPTAIN AMERICA: WINTER SOLDIER. This is definitely an exciting spin to put on the sequel. We still have yet to see how Chris Pine, Pedro Pascal, and Kristen Wiig’s Cheetah will fit into this sequel.

Peter Jackson Rejects DCEU Rumors

As far as legendary modern directors go, Peter Jackson is high on the list. His LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy still stands as one of the greatest examples of epic filmmaking. So it seemed like a logical step that Warner Bros., the studio that produced THE LORD OF THE RINGS and HOBBIT movies, would want Jackson involved in their DC Universe.

Over the past weeks, there has been much speculation that Jackson has had a talk with Warner Bros. on taking on a specific DC project. The rumors went so far as to suggest that Jackson was deciding between becoming involved with Amazon’s LORD OF THE RINGS series or a DC project like the aforementioned DC universe streaming service.

Jackson set the record straight to AlloCine, saying “It’s not true, I have not had any discussions about it, I’m not a fan of comics, I’ve never read it, and so it’s not me.” He continued “I’m not particularly interested in adopting one to the cinema, it’s not true at all. A DC film and the series Lord of the Rings, it’s done without me, but I’m happy. I have plenty of other projects that take up my time!”

For anyone who was hoping for Jackson to take part in a DC project, this is supremely disappointing. However, if Jackson has no interest in adopting a DC character then he shouldn’t. I’d much rather he bring his creative talents to a project which he is more passionate about. Nonetheless, Steven Spielberg always claimed he would never direct a superhero movie and now he is directing the Blackhawk movie. Therefore, never say never to Jackson directing a DC movie in the far future!

DC Universe Streaming Service Plans to Arrive in August

For our Final piece of news, we have some good news for people craving new binge worth DC content ASAP.  On the podcast, James Bonding, DC’s Community Manager Dani Snow revealed that the DC Universe streaming service plans to launch late August 2018.

Snow said “We are about to launch,  I think, late August, our DC digital platform, which will be a hub for all things DC,” Snow said.

“Right now, we’re working on getting everything from the back catalog of animated TV shows and movies on there now, but we will also be producing. I think, right now, we have four in production, original shows, including Swamp Thing.”

Most generally thought that 2019 would serve as the year of the DC Universe streaming service’s release. The fact that we may get new DC content so soon is a welcome surprise.

Snow added that on the DC Universe streaming service, “there will be digital movies, TV shows that you can watch, streaming,” Show said. “We’re going to have a lot of comics on there. There’s going to be a lot of good stuff on there.” The fact that not only movies and tv shows, but comics too, will have a place with DC Universe streaming service makes the service that much more enticing! August never seemed so far away.
