It’s time for another Gotham Gazette; your one-stop shop for all the latest and biggest DC film and television news. In this issue, most of the news is about reveals for DC’s upcoming projects, so let’s take a look!

JOKER Origin Film Added to the Upcoming Projects List

Let’s start off with what’s undeniably the most surprising bit of DC news of late: the Joker origin film has just received a green light from Warner Bros.! The film will star Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker, and not Jared Leto, the current Joker actor in the DCEU. The Joker origin film will also be the first in the line of DC films with the rumored “DC Black” or “DC Dark” label. These films would be a series of films based off of DC Comics that would stand on their own, not part of any other film’s continuity.

Reports say that Martin Scorsese will act as an executive producer, with Todd Phillips writing the script and directing. There’s also the rumors that Robert De Nero will act as a co-star to Phoenix’s Joker. Apparently, Frances McDormand passed on having a role in the film. According to Umberto Gonzalez from The Wrap, it was for the role of the Joker’s mother.

As far as the film’s plot is concerned, many believe that the most likely origin for the film will be the most popular origin the Joker has from the comics, The Killing Joke. While the Joker has no set origin, the Killing Joke origin tells the story of a failing comedian turning to crime to support his family, and eventually having an accident in a vat of toxic waste, becoming the Clown Prince of Crime known as the Joker. Perhaps will know more at SDCC?

Upcoming Projects: Set Video Shows Off Cheetah’s Powers

WW84 is another one of DC’s upcoming projects and is currently in the midst of filming. A recent set video surfaced, showing Kristen Wiig’s abilities as the Cheetah. The video shows Wiig, or her stunt double, leaping upwards from the street to a rooftop.

Having Cheetah in the WONDER WOMAN sequel is going to be incredible. Cheetah is arguably one of Diana’s greatest rivals. Plus, if their relationship begins as friends, like in recent comics, it will make their rivalry all the more dynamic and entertaining after the powers of the cheetah emerge, corrupting the woman who was once Barbara Minerva.

ARROW Season 7 Teaser

Season seven of CW’s ARROW is in production and fans will soon see their favorite archer again. However, based on the way season six ended, fans may find Oliver Queen is not the best place. Former showrunner turned consulting producer Marc Guggenheim teased the storyline for the upcoming season in a tweet.

The tweet featured a picture of a visitor’s pass for Slabside Maximum Security Prison with the caption “Come pay Oliver a visit…” Based on this tweet and the official synopsis for season seven, it seems that the CW may be planning to adapt GREEN ARROW: ESCAPE FROM SUPERMAX.

For those unfamiliar with the story of GREEN ARROW: ESCAPE FROM SUPERMAX, it was a failed movie project from 2008. The script was written by David Goyer (BATMAN V. SUPERMAN) and Justin Marks (THE JUNGLE BOOK, 2016) and it tells the story of Green Arrow stuck in a Maximum-Security prison for a crime he didn’t commit. In the film, Green Arrow had to team up with several criminals to escape.

If the CW plans to take inspiration from this story, then fans could expect to see Oliver escaping with the help of some former enemies he’s put away.

Upcoming Projects: BIRDS OF PREY

Warner Brothers (WB) has decided to pursue the Harley Quinn centered film BIRDS OF PREY. Australian actress Margot Robbie is set to reprise her role as Harley Quinn. Margot Robbie previously played the character in 2016’s SUICIDE SQUAD. Despite that film receiving mixed reviews from critics and fans alike, most viewers agree that Robbie’s Harley Quinn was definitely a highlight of the film. So far, BIRDS OF PREY has its director Cathy Yan (DEAD PIGS) and screenwriter Cristina Hodson (BUMBLEBEE) signed onto the project.

In an interview with Collider, Margot Robbie suggests that the film could potentially have an R-rating. It makes sense that WB would consider making a rated R superhero film due to 20th Century Fox’s success with DEADPOOL and LOGAN. If WB does decide to go this more mature route, then it could lead to some potentially dark stories — especially Harley’s abusive relationship with the Joker.

Which, to most fans dismay, is completely cut from SUICIDE SQUAD for the most part. Robbie also stated that they were looking for a more diverse female cast of heroes and villains. This opens the possibility of including more villains and heroes of color in the film, such as Katana who was underrepresented in SUICIDE SQUAD.

While there is no release date yet, the film starts filming in January 2019.

Upcoming Projects: SHAZAM Updates

Entertainment Weekly recently released a photo of the upcoming film SHAZAM! This photo reveals two important aspects of this superhero film. First, Freddy Freeman (Jack Dylan Grazer) will be disabled. We can see this due to the crutch on his left arm. That is terrific news for fans who suffer physical disabilities since they will have a character whom they can relate to.

Second, this scene is straight out of the New 52. When Billy first transforms into Shazam in the comics, Freddy is the first one to find out. Then the two boys use Billy’s newfound adult appearance to get a beer. Granted, in the photo, it appears that two are drinking Cola — still, this is a clear homage to the comics.

In other SHAZAM related news, Djimon Hounsou has been cast as the Wizard who grants Billy his powers. In the comics, the Wizard feels he has grown too old to combat the forces of evil. So, he bestows his powers to Billy Batson, a boy he believes possesses a pure heart.

It is worth noting that Hounsou is no stranger to starring in comic book films. Marvel fans will recognize this actor from 2014’s GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY as Korath, a mercenary working for Ronan. In March 2019, Hounsou will reprise his role as Korath in CAPTAIN MARVEL. However, before starring in CAPTAIN MARVEL or SHAZAM, Hounsou will play the Fisherman King in DC’s AQUAMAN coming December 21st, 2018.
