At their Sakura-Con panel on Friday, March 30th, Funimation announced their license of the ASSASSINATION CLASSROOM: 365 DAYS TIME film. According to Anime News Network, Funimation plans to release the title direct to DVD on July 3rd, 2018.

Fans in the United States have waited a long time for this film. It originally opened in Japan November 19th, 2016 alongside a spin-off series, ASSASSINATION CLASSROOM: KORO SENSEI QUEST! The film takes place seven years after the end of the show. It focuses on the older, now-graduated versions of Nagisa and Karma. The two friends return to their old classroom, 3-E, the day before a class reunion and reminisce about their old school days. ASSASSINATION CLASSROOM: 365 DAYS TIME recaps the original ASSASSINATION CLASSROOM anime through their flashbacks in just 92 minutes.

Lessons in the Assassination Classroom

The ASSASSINATION CLASSROOM anime adaptation closely follows the manga series by Yusei Matsui, originally serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump from 2012 to 2016. The series finished with 21 volumes licensed in English by Viz Media. The anime by studio Lerche began airing in Japan in January 2015. Funimation broadcasted the English dub of the series in February of 2015. Two live-action adaptations, ASSASSINATION CLASSROOM, and ASSASSINATION CLASSROOM: GRADUATION were released in 2015 and 2016, respectively.

ASSASSINATION CLASSROOM tells the story of Korosensei, a mutant with sticky yellow tentacles. Named after a pun meaning “unkillable teacher” in Japanese, Korosensei possesses superpowers such as the ability to travel at Mach 20. Korosensei destroyed the moon and threatens to do the same to the Earth in one year, but with one caveat: he will teach students at Kunigigaoka Junior High School in Class 3-E for that year. Class 3-E, also known as the “end class,” consists of students who fail to thrive in the traditional classroom. Korosensei teaches these students valuable life lessons through assassination techniques. Funded through a secret government deal, the students use knives and special bullets that can only harm Korosensei. Their ultimate goal is to assassinate Korosensei before graduation and his one-year deadline.

During the school year, Korosensei cultivates each student’s unique abilities. He teaches one student how to be a better baseball player, another to brew harmful poisons, and yet another to realize his potential to be a leader. In the beginning, the students despaired for their futures. However, by the end of the school year, the students forged unique bonds and learned skills that could help them achieve their new career goals.

Expectations for the New Film

Since ASSASSINATION CLASSROOM: 365 DAYS TIME summarizes the story of the anime, major changes to the plot are not expected. In addition, according to Crunchyroll, the movie will also include an extra original story.

Because of its recap style, ASSASSINATION CLASSROOM: 365 DAYS TIME will be enjoyable and refreshing for old fans and newcomers to the series. Viewers will get to see how Karma and Nagisa have grown and matured since the events of the original anime. If the clever storytelling and stylistic animation of the series is anything to go by, this newest installment is a treat to look forward to.
