Warning: Spoilers ahead for FLASH Season 5!

FLASH Season 5 is here! The premiere aired this week along with BLACK LIGHTNING, officially kicking off the Arrowverse once again. Let’s recap FLASH Season 5 and the introduction of Barry and Iris Allen’s daughter from the future, Nora.

FLASH Season 5: A Synopsis

The FLASH Season 5 premiere opens right where Season 4 leaves off. Nora, played by Jessica Parker Kennedy, arrives at Joe’s door where she convinces Team Flash that she’s the future daughter of Barry, Grant Gustin, and Iris, Candice Patton. She tells them that in the future, she is the protector of Central City, being a speedster just like her dad. She goes by the name XS. She’s also the speedster that helped Barry stop the satellite crashing down to Earth in the Season 4 finale. Unfortunately, she tells them that she is unable to return to her time, as she now lacks the speed to make the return trip.

After some tests, Caitlin and Cisco confirm that Nora really is Barry and Iris’ daughter. Barry then heads to CCPD where Barry gets his job back as a CSI now that DeVoe has been publicly revealed as the Thinker. Nora arrives, offering to help, but a call then comes in alerting a meta attack in progress. Donning his original suit, the Flash runs out to go face the meta, Gridlock.

While it initially seems like Barry has the fight well in hand, he is caught off-guard by Nora wanting to help. Gridlock escapes, which is a deviation from how the timeline was supposed to be, according to Nora. Iris and Nora go out for coffee, and soon after Cisco creates a tachyon device that will allow Barry to boost Nora’s speed, getting her back to her time. However, it doesn’t work and Team Flash discovers that Nora has negative-tachyons that are slowing her down.

FLASH Season 5: The Crisis Will Happen & A New Big Bad Arrives

Gridlock attacks again, and Team Flash realizes that without their satellite, it will be harder to track metas. After Barry and Iris discuss the craziness of having kids and interacting with a daughter that they haven’t even had yet, Nora reveals to Barry that she’s choosing to stay in the past. Why? Because the Crisis with the red skies that happens in the future according to Wells’ future newspaper does come to pass. When it does, the Flash disappears and doesn’t return. Nora’s hoping to prevent her father’s disappearance from happening.

Team Flash discovers that Gridlock is on a plane with the intent to crash it and become invincible by absorbing the kinetic energy. They create a plan to phase the plane through any obstacles until it can safely land. Nora gives her dad a Flash ring from the future containing a brand new suit. Barry, Wally, and Nora stop Gridlock from crashing the plane by phasing it through some buildings and a bridge.

They save all the passengers and arrest Gridlock. After this, Cisco makes a new device that will cancel out Nora’s negative tachyons. However, Barry suggests that perhaps they wait, and chooses to not reveal the real reason Nora came to the past. He says they should make sure Nora’s powers are working okay.

The end of the episode sees a captured Gridlock being transported from an armored car. However, a new villain arrives wielding a bolt-shaped blade. He tells Gridlock that he wants all meta-humans to die before killing him.

FLASH Season 5: Who’s The Guy With The Dagger?

The big bad for FLASH Season 5 is none other than Cicada. In the comics, Cicada is a preacher who gets struck by lightning. After this event, he is given immortality so long as he takes the life forces of others.

In the comics he has a pretty strong rivalry with the Flash, creating a cult that would seek out and attack those who the Flash saves. However, it looks as though the CW series will be taking Cicada in a different direction, having a hatred for all metas and killing them with a lightning bolt-shaped knife.

FLASH Season 5: Some Great Moments

There are a few notable moments that stood out for me watching the premiere for FLASH Season 5. The first one is that Nora gives the opening and closing narrations typically reserved for Barry. It was different and new and speaks to her prowess as a growing hero in her own time, eventually taking over for the Flash. It also speaks to her level of importance and involvement as FLASH Season 5 progresses. She’s gonna be a big driving force for the narrative and a big part of Team Flash this season.

The second was Flash’s new suit from his Flash ring! Somehow, all of Barry’s suits get their new design features from the future. An example would be with the white background for the lightning bolt being an idea that came from the future. This time it’s a whole new suit courtesy of Nora. I really like it. It looks closer to the Flash’s comic book look more than any of the other suits previous.

The third was seeing three speedsters working together to phase an entire plane. It was a very cool scene made even cooler with Barry coaching his daughter on how to phase for the first time. You can triple that coolness due to Barry using the same advice and words Wells used when he coached Barry on how to phase. It was a really great moment and an awesome call back to the first season.

FLASH Season 5: Easter Eggs!

When you have the Flash’s daughter arrive from the future there’s bound to be some great name drops and references. Some of the notable ones were that Ryan Choi created this new iteration of the Flash’s suit. For those who don’t know, Ryan Choi is the eventual Atom after Ray Palmer. It could be interesting to see if that succession will play out down the line in LEGENDS OF TOMORROW. We’ll see.

Furthermore, An episode of LEGENDS was mentioned by Wally, the one where they all meet Elvis. Lightning Lad also gets a name drop as well. Marty Mcfly, BACK TO THE FUTURE, and TERMINATOR 2 all get references due to the nature of Nora’s arrival and the potential consequences that could occur to the timeline much like in those films.

The Flash Museum gets a reference by Nora a few times. It’s where she learns about the Flash’s adventures, and also gets the new suit. The curator, Mr. Myles, gets a reference too. The Museum also shows up on-screen briefly in the season finale of the first season, so it’s cool to see it come up again even now in Season 5.

SCHWAY! Probably the best easter egg, in my opinion, is Nora’s use of the future term, “schway.” Schway means cool in the DC’s future and comes from the animated cartoon series BATMAN BEYOND. It was super fun to hear since Nora’s from the future, and she says it more than a few times.

FLASH Season 5: Overall

Overall I thought that this was a great premiere episode. It really sets the bar for the rest of FLASH Season 5. It keeps things engaging and exciting, which is definitely a must when you’re on your 5th season of a very popular series.
