The tickets went on sale as well in conjunction with the trailer release. It’s a pretty epic trailer for Episode IX, so let’s do a breakdown of the top 5 moments. 1. The Emperor’s Debut in Episode IX Trailer While we’ve heard some laughter and dialogue (“Your journey nears its’ end”) in the previous trailers, we get even more confirmation that Darth Sidious, Emperor Palpatine himself, will be playing a large part in Episode IX. Our first new sign is a menacing looking throne. We hear new lines from Emperor actor Ian Mcdiarmid: “Long have I waited…your coming together is your undoing…” Image from Disney/Lucasfilm Somehow. Some way. Palpatine survives his fall at the hands of Vader/Anakin Skywalker and the second Death Star’s destruction. Apparently he’s been biding his time, and now is the time to take control and regain power as ruler of the galaxy once more. Later on in the trailer, we see Rey and Kylo Ren facing each other in the remains of the Emperor’s throne room on the second Death Star. Lastly, we do get a shot of Rey facing what looks to be Sidious, complete with black hood. However, our view is from behind, so that means the obvious thought is most likely wrong. It’s probably not Sidious as we might expect in that final shot of the Episode IX trailer. Could it be a dark side force ghost? A younger cloned version of himself played by Matt Smith (My guess)? Could it be Anakin Skywalker, brought back from the grave by the Emperor? What about Kylo Ren, possessed by the spirit of Sidious? There’s so many potential options beyond the obvious choice. Don’t forget that Darth Rey shot from the last trailer. 2. Rey and Kylo Duel Turns to Team-Up? Furthermore, while we do see Rey and Kylo dueling above a raging sea, there are plenty of moments that could imply that they might reach an accord. Image from Disney/Lucasfilm There’s a shot of them seemingly smashing some sort of statue-esque construct together (Vader’s remains?), and the throne room scene doesn’t seem like they’re tense and about to attack one another. Could it be that the threat of the Emperor causes them to form an uneasy alliance? 3. Threepio’s Farewell? I’ve Got A Bad Feeling About This… From everything we’ve seen from all the Episode IX trailers, including this one, C-3PO looks like he’ll be having a hard time. He might even be nearing his demise. Previous trailers show Threepio with red eyes instead of his usual yellow. While it could be a cosmetic change akin to the red arm addition he gets in THE FORCE AWAKENS, I kinda doubt it. It seems more likely from the previous trailers that Threepio becomes overtaken by some sort of virus or malevolent programming. However, this latest Episode IX seems to indicate that it might be by choice. Image from Disney/Lucasfilm This trailer shows Threepio being wired in, and pausing. When Poe asks him what he’s doing, Threepio responds, saying that he’s taking one last look at his friends. He’s met with sad looks. Could it be that Threepio is choosing to succumb to some sort of irreversible First Order programming in order to save the day? It could be. While it would be sad to see Threepio go, one of the very first named characters we meet in STAR WARS alongside R2-D2, it would be pretty incredible to see him play a critical role in saving the galaxy. 4. The Resistance Fleet in Episode IX Trailer and The Calvary When the Emperor says that the heroes coming together will be their undoing, we get an incredible shot: There’s the Millenium Falcon, in all its glory, leading the charge with what looks to be hundreds of Resistance ships behind it. Image from Disney/Lucasfilm Match that shot with what we see in the previous trailers of all of those Star Destroyers in a lightning storm: Image from Disney/Lucasfilm It’s going to be the biggest, most insane starship battle STAR WARS has ever seen. We get further shots in this trailer of several TIE Fighters, Y-Wings doing barrel roles, and more legit dogfighting. It’s going to be a crazy starship battle to watch, and is sure to be absolutely gorgeous to look at. This epic ship battle looks like it will be even crazier by having its’ ships still in a planet’s atmosphere. That means we get a crazy shot like this: Image from Disney/Lucasfilm Yep. That’s a Resistance calvary on alien-horseback, galloping their forces on the exterior hull of a Star Destroyer, while ships swoop down and fire overhead. What?! That’s so awesome! Well done JJ Abrams. Well done. Upping the ante even further for Episode IX. 5. Luke and Leia End The Episode IX Trailer They saved the best moment for last. After that shot of Rey facing the Emperor we get a close-up of Rey, lightsaber at the ready. Image from Disney/Lucasfilm We then hear Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) say that classic, iconic, nostalgic line: “The Force will be with you…” Here’s where it gets better: The line is continued with one last word, spoken by Leia (Carrie Fisher): “Always.” Gosh. It’s such a strong way to finish this final Episode IX trailer. Especially when considering that today would have been the late Carrie Fisher’s 63rd birthday. We do get a shot prior to this line of Leia, with her embracing Rey. It looks as though both Leia and Luke will still have strong parts to play in Episode IX. Luke gets an especially good line of voiceover dialogue earlier in the trailer, saying that confronting fear is the destiny of a Jedi. It looks like Rey will be doing plenty of that. What did you think about the Episode IX trailer. Do you have even more questions like we do? Let us know in the comments below!
