Fandoms have existed since the days of Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes stories, but there are few fandoms more passionate, and important, than the STAR TREK fandom. When the series was facing cancellation at the end of its second series, it was the letter writing campaign of the fans that kept the show around just long enough to bring it into syndication. That syndicated series of re-runs is where most fans discovered the show and proved the series’ popularity. Fifty years later, fans converged in New York City to celebrate STAR TREK, the show that truly could not have existed without them. Below you’ll find our brief interviews with some fans we encountered during Star Trek Mission New York. A special thank you to each of them for taking the time to speak with us at the con!

ComicsVerse: “How long have you guys been watching STAR TREK?”

”I watched the original series.”

How about you two?

“TNG”

“Yeah TNG totally got me hooked.”

Are you guys all close friends?

“We’ve known each other a month. We’ve only been in New York six months.”

“Well we, [man in yellow, woman in red], have been married 21 years.”

“And then we started talking about STAR TREK.”

“We met at a networking event, and we ended up…turned out we all had a mutual love of science fiction generally. We started talking STAR WARS, STAR TREK, science fiction in general, all the shows. And we’d never, ever been to a convention; any of us.”

How are you liking it so far?

“It’s great!”

“It’s cool, we said this is the first one we gotta dress up, do the whole thing.”

Which of the two of you would you say is the biggest STAR TREK fan?

“Hmm”

“I think Katherine is.”

“Well, I have been following them ever since the late 60’s.”

So you’ve been a fan since the beginning?

“Yeah, I kinda grew up with the original STAR TREK. And then just kinda migrated to the others.”

And did you get her into it?

“No, we just kinda realized we were both into it because I was so surprised!”

“Because I’ve been to comic cons before and then I’m like ‘oh, she has the cute outfit, I’ll get one too!’ I do like the original STAR TREK, and I do like ENTERPRISE. I actually like the reboots too, the new movies that are out. I think it’s a great cast.”

What are your hopes for the new series that’s coming out?

“Kinda wish it wasn’t going to be a pay service.”

I don’t think you’re alone on that one.

“Which is kinda silly, but it would be nice to see it, but I don’t know if I’ll pay for it?”

You guys could always go halfsies on it!

“That’s true.”

“That’s true.”

“But I’d like to see who they cast, how the story goes, and where they begin from. I haven’t read up too much about it like where they’re starting it off from.

“Exactly.”

“Like the movie, I thought they did a great job. I think JJ Abrams and everybody. I think the stories are great.”

Of the two of you, who would you say is the biggest STAR TREK fan?

[Man points to himself] “It would be this way.”

Did you guys watch it together? Did you initially get her into it?

“Well, I used to watch it back in the day.”

With the original series?

“Yes, definitely.”

Who would you say is your favorite character?

“I like William Shatner.”

“The captain’s always the Captain. And of course Spock.”

Any hopes for the new series?

“I just hope it continues in the tradition of all the other series.”

What would you say defines that tradition?

“The unity of everyone. It’s unbelievable. It’s so much better than all the other science fiction shows out there.”

How did you guys first discover STAR TREK?

“I was probably born a Trekkie because my father especially looked at the original series, so I’ve looked at it ever since I was about 3 or 4. Then we got married and he liked Next Gen, so it just kept going.”

“I just came across the original series episodes on reruns and got hooked.”

Do you guys have debates about who your favorite character is or what’s the best series?

“Oh yeah.”

“It’s not a debate.”

[Laughs]

“We’ll watch episodes just to look at it from different angles and then discuss, y’know, what’s going on and who handled what better. That’s half the fun!”

How excited are you guys to get to watch a new series together and debate about that?

“Very. We’re already debating. We’re like ‘well, they haven’t told us a lot about it, but this is what I’m thinking so far, and I’m like ‘well, I think you’re jumping ahead.’”

“It’s a long time coming. We’re ready.”

Who is your favorite character for each of you?

“Favorite character would probably still be Spock.”

Why Spock?

“The half-human/half-Vulcan. The episodes where he gets to show the human side; singing, crying, all that stuff. I just love all that. I love that character”

Who would you say is your favorite character?

“She’s kinda new to STAR TREK, so it’s hard to say which one she’d probably like.”

”I like Spock too!”

As someone who’s new to the show, what is it that appeals to you about it?

“The new ideas, just totally different…I’m not like a…”

You can say it, it’s okay

“A sci-fi person! It’s new.”

What do you hope to see in the new series?

“Similar to the old series, I’d like to see the camaraderie. The original series, I grew up watching those guys on channel 11, 11 o’clock at night every night. THE NEXT GENERATION I thought was a little sterile. A little more by the book kinda stuff. It started to peek through later with the friendships and camaraderie, but you couldn’t beat Spock, Bones, and Kirk. Those three guys are like brothers. They’d die for each other. I cry every time Spock dies in THE WRATH OF KHAN. And then I cry when his dad’s mind melds with Kirk in STAR TREK III and he recites those words. Oh man, I’m gonna cry right now thinking about it. I love those guys. The camaraderie, the brotherhood.”

Do you guys watch STAR TREK together?

“Yes, we do!”

Who are your favorite characters?

“Who’s your favorite?”

“Captain!”

Captain? All of them?

“Courtney has only seen the original…so she means Captain Kirk, and of course Spock is my favorite, so that’s the outfits we got!”
