EXILES #6

It’s a blast from the past — WESTWORLD style! Writer Saladin Ahmed and artist Rod Reis are bringing us back to the days of Saloon gunfights and lassoing cowboys in the preview for EXILES #6.

In the opening pages of the issue, we see the team struggling to move forward after the destruction of the Tallus: their reality-hopping device. Wolvie suggests using the power of friendship to fix the Tallus and, surprisingly, when they all touch the gadget it powers back up, sending them to what appears to be the wild American west.

But, as always, looks can be deceiving. The people of this Western town aren’t surprised by the Exiles’ strange appearances, even though they definitely should be. Even stranger, no one is alarmed by the arrival of a certain white-haired speedster and his toad-like friend. The last pages of the preview see Blink stopping a Western version of Quicksilver from harassing a woman. However, the preview ends before we can get a lot of background on the reality and why the classic Brotherhood of Evil Mutants team is there.

Saddle Up

The thing I love most about EXILES (and the thing that makes it so unique) is its absurdity. Why is the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants roaming the saloons in a nineteenth-century western town? Because it’s an issue of EXILES. Honestly, that’s all the explanation anyone needs. This series continues to push the boundaries of what a comic book can be, which is why it’s so exciting. The settings, characters, and plots are ridiculous and might border on childish for some, but for those who can suspend disbelief for a second or two, EXILES may just become your new favorite series.

In EXILES #6, I’d really like to see Ahmed explore the relationship between Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, and Magneto. Since it’s an alternate reality, he can kind of do whatever he wants — regardless of what Earth-616 says. In current comics, the Maximoff twins are no longer related to Magneto (thanks MCU for ruining that for us). However, that doesn’t mean they aren’t related in the Wild West.

EXILES #6 doesn’t have to follow any rules. It can be as over-the-top and ridiculous as it wants to be. Magneto can be Wanda and Pietro’s father without causing backlash in the current continuity. There’s an indisputable power in that — a power that I think Ahmed has used well so far in EXILES. Let’s hope he uses it well in EXILES #6.
