With the Eternals movie underway there is a lot of speculation as to what the film will be about. It could end up being a film similar to that of GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY: a fun, action-packed sci-fi adventure film. And while I’m sure the film will have those aspects regardless of the plot, it could be something much deeper. It has the potential to be the origin story of the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe. Let’s take a look into the origin of the Eternals and discover how their origin story could also be Earth’s.

It Starts with the Celestials

We have already been introduced to Celestials in the MCU in the form of Ego the Living Planet. In the comics, Ego is actually an Elder of the Universe similar to The Collector and The Grandmaster. However, his introduction into the MCU as a Celestial was an introduction to all Celestials — and the Celestials are responsible for life on Earth in the MCU as we know it.

In the comics, the Celestials came across Earth as they were traveling through the cosmos. They experimented on the primitive life that existed on Earth at that time. Through their experimentation, they created three separate races: the Deviants, the Humans, and the Eternals. The Celestials then left Earth and allowed the new life to evolve as it would.

The Three Races

First we have the Deviants, who were a section of humanoid life on Earth that was mutated. Though they looked similar to trolls and goblins, the Deviants evolved faster than humans and eventually enslaved them. Then there were the Humans, who were designed to have limitless expansion of genetic potential. Though they did not evolve as fast as the Deviants, the Humans would eventually evolve into how we know them today, and even beyond. Lastly we have the Eternals, who were beings that were basically the peak of evolutionary maturity. They have the power to tap into and manipulate cosmic energies. The Eternals cared little for Earth, however, and focused more on intergalactic expansion.

When the Celestials eventually returned to Earth, they were attacked by the Deviants. The Deviants were the superior life form on Earth and did not want their rule to be threatened. During this battle, the Eternals left Earth entirely and made Titan their home. The Celestials beat the Deviants and obliterated their race. The outcome left Humans as the primary life on Earth.

The MCU Adaptation

Alright, so now that we know the comic history, let’s get into what this could mean for the MCU! What would really be cool is if the origin of Earth, as explained in the section above, was the opening to the Eternals movie. If it were, we would see a more in-depth look at the Celestials, as well as the origin of the Eternals. Given that it is an Eternals movie, the origin of their race may be something the filmmakers would want to touch on.

Something a little more subtle that we would see is the explanation of mutants on Earth. Humans were designed with unlimited genetic potential and were destined to evolve into mutants. Therefore, the Eternals movie could be the soft introduction to mutants in the MCU! So cool! Not to mention the battle between Deviants and Celestials would be absolutely amazing to see on the big screen.

Expanding the MCU

The overall goal of the Eternals movie should be to expand the cosmic side of the MCU. The best way to start that expansion would be to first go into the past. To reveal the history of Earth and how it ties in with the Eternals and the eventual mutants of Earth.

The Eternals movie is the perfect time to reveal this history. With AVENGERS: ENDGAME, the MCU is closing a major chapter in its universe. More importantly, however, the MCU is opening up a brand new chapter. What better way is there to kick off a new phase in the MCU than with the reveal of the history of Earth? It would be a direct tie-in with the Eternals as a great starting off point for the movie. It would also allow for a more natural introduction to mutants in later films.

Basically, the history of Earth at the beginning of the Eternals movie would be awesome to see. It would be brief enough to allow the main characters to have their own story later in the film. It would also be impactful enough to reshape the current landscape of the MCU. We’d get a more in-depth look at the power and influence of the Celestials and we’d have an explanation as to why mutants will appear in future MCU films. Those points, along with the fantastic sci-fi adventure our heroes will embark on, could make the Eternals movie one of the most impressive yet in the MCU.
