DRAGON BALL SUPER: BROLY is, without a doubt, the biggest buzz in anime right now. With DRAGON BALL being a series that spans generations, this isn’t surprising. DRAGON BALL SUPER, the latest iteration of the iconic shonen, only recently ended. Now, DRAGON BALL SUPER: BROLY is picking up the story with some interesting changes to the old storyline in an all-new movie.

For those not too familiar with the shift, it’s important to note that Broly isn’t exactly a new character. The legendary saiyan has had multiple movies. Starting off as the indomitable Legendary Super Saiyan, he returned twice to battle the Z fighters. Up until now, however, these movies occurred outside of the normal timeline and story of DRAGON BALL Z. That means that they were non-canon, or basically extra details that didn’t affect the standard series. This version of Broly is not completely redesigned from the old version. On top of that, DRAGON BALL SUPER: BROLY makes him and the backstory associated with him canon and part of the true DRAGON BALL storyline.

That’s where Goku’s mother comes in and things really get interesting. Nearly five years ago, a special manga called DRAGON BALL MINUS released and showed the story of Goku’s departure from planet Vegeta and subsequent arrival on Earth. DRAGON BALL SUPER: BROLY incorporates that old special story into the real one, formally introducing Gine and giving us an amazing new character to obsess over. And now, we’ve got new visuals and cool details about who Gine is (or, was!) and how she’ll look in the new movie.

Mother of a Legend!

Gine dons the standard Saiyan battle attire and likely was a warrior. Like all pure-blooded Saiyans, she sports a tail. But, prior to her sending Goku away in Superman-style fashion, she had some unique character too. Check out the visuals of Gine courtesy of Comicbook.com:

Gine’s voice actor in DRAGON BALL SUPER: BROLY is Naoko Watanabe. Watanabe is best known for her work voicing Chi-Chi, Goku’s wife.  This is somewhat weird if you think about it too hard. But, it means that an exceedingly talented voice actor is taking up this brand new role. That alone is pretty exciting.

Even more, it seems Gine has a gentle personality, one that is quite rare for Saiyans. This makes some degree of sense, considering how kind Goku can be. But it also creates some cool potential for her character. To be a lower class Saiyan still means you were part of a warrior race. It seems ludicrous at first for someone born to a planet of bloodthirsty soldiers to be gentle. However, it explains why she would want a young Goku to have a chance for a new life as someone different. Having her part of the DRAGON BALL canon will add a lot to how we look at Planet Vegeta and Goku.

Get Hyped for Gine and DRAGON BALL SUPER: BROLY!

From the trailers we’ve seen so far, this movie will be amazing. The original Broly movies were some of the best fights across all of DRAGON BALL. And this Broly is stronger than any of the others. He’s capable of trading blows with Goku and Vegeta while they’re powered up in Super Saiyan Blue. And, without spoiling anything from the last DRAGON BALL SUPER arc, it’s likely he’s at least as strong as the most recent major antagonists. Having him and others in the canon will make massive waves across the series. Bringing in Gine is just icing on a massive cake.

DRAGON BALL SUPER: BROLY arrives in Japan this December. A month later, it’ll make its wake to US theaters on January 16th, 2019. And, like with just about every big shonen movie nowadays, scores of fans will gladly assemble to scream and watch as planet-busting Saiyans throw hands. And I’ll be right alongside them.
