The past month has been really exciting and equally confusing for DC Comics and Warner Bros. Studios. There’s been conflicting reports on whether or not Matt Reeves’ THE BATMAN is in the DCEU or not, rumors of a Joker origin movie that is not in the DCEU and shake ups with SUICIDE SQUAD director David Ayer, among other things. So, let’s get started and clear some things up for everyone.

Director Matt Reeves on THE BATMAN

Earlier this month, Matt Reeves spoke with KCRW in an interview about THE BATMAN. He said when Warner Bros. approached him about the project that it was “a standalone, it’s not part of the extended universe.” This caused a huge buzz on the internet, even bringing back rumors from last month that Affleck was out as Batman again. Just a day later, Reeves clarified his statements by tweeting the following:

So, to make it as completely clear as possible, THE BATMAN is in the DCEU. It will be isolated to itself and the immediate characters around Batman, but will still be in continuity with JUSTICE LEAGUE and BATMAN V SUPERMAN.

The film will no longer feature the script that Ben Affleck and Geoff Johns had written previously since Reeves has scrapped it. There is also no word on whether or not Joe Manganiello’s Deathstroke will appear in the film anymore. The film is most likely going to release in 2019 to coincide with Batman’s 80th Anniversary.

A report from The Tracking Board last Wednesday said that SUICIDE SQUAD director David Ayer had left and that GOTHAM CITY SIRENS was reportedly canceled. The report went on to say that those projects would be replaced by a Joker/Harley Quinn film from STUPID, CRAZY, LOVE filmmakers John Requa and Glenn Ficarra. This is, however, not the case.

Confirmed by Forbes just two days later, GOTHAM CITY SIRENS is, in fact, still in development. Both projects are in development, as well a SUICIDE SQUAD sequel. Subsequently, David Ayer is also reportedly still attached to direct GOTHAM CITY SIRENS. This makes it three films that are currently in development that will feature Harley Quinn.

Lastly, SUICIDE SQUAD 2 has been fast tracked by Warner Bros. and will start production at the end of 2018. No word on directors or story has come out as of yet.

Joker Origin Standalone Film Announced

Probably the biggest DC news of the month, a new Joker origin film was reported to be in production. The Deadline report says the film will be a standalone story that is not in continuity with the DCEU. Legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese is reportedly producing the film with HANGOVER director, Todd Phillips, attached to direct.

Some rumored details on the film have also made their way onto the web this week. The film is rumored to take place in the 1980’s and feature a young Joker with a permanent smile on his face. It will be a darker and more grounded crime film. Also, the film resembles Scorsese’s early work, like TAXI DRIVER and RAGING BULL.

This is huge news for two reasons. One, an all new Joker origin from the crime movie legend himself, Martin Scorsese!!! And two, this seemingly confirms that DC and Warner Bros. are beginning to make “Elseworlds” style films. Standalone films with DC properties that stay separate from the main DCEU films could do huge business for Warner Bros. and please a lot of fans. This film could open the door to plenty more Elseworlds films in the years to come.

Final Thoughts & Updates

The last few updates we’ve gotten recently are comparatively small, but they are still important.

Joss Whedon officially got a writing credit on JUSTICE LEAGUE and will be directing a solo BATGIRL film for the DCEU. Whedon’s BATGIRL film wasn’t even on Warner Bros.’ schedule until Whedon pitched his idea and they picked it up.

SHAZAM! has already begun pre-production according to director David F. Sandberg’s recent Instagram posts:

Lastly, HOUSEBOUND writer, Gerard Johnstone, has been brought on to polish the JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK script, which is still in need of a director.

So, that’s pretty much it for the news as of late. What do you think of a new Joker origin movie? Do we need three Harley Quinn movies so close together? How do you feel about more standalone DC films? Let me know in the comments down below!
