In response, we here at ComicsVerse want to take a moment to remember how far the Avengers and we the audience have come to get to this point. Let’s take a look at the core six Avengers’ journey to ENDGAME and guess where they might end up after the dust settles. Iron Man’s Avengers’ Journey as The MCU Godfather Tony Stark had it all before he became a superhero: Money, fame, and power. But ever since becoming Iron Man he’s become a tireless fighter for justice and a natural-born leader. Tony’s journey has seen him evolve from a selfish playboy billionaire to a man willing to sacrifice himself for the greater good. Over the course of the MCU franchise, we’ve seen Tony evolve into a leader and grapple with his own legacy as well. As a character, Tony has dealt with his own fears, anxieties, and regrets in addition to fighting cosmic villains. In the wake of saving New York, we witness Tony examining his morality and the true stakes of being a hero. From where he’s started, Tony Stark is arguably the most evolved character in the MCU and in some ways, it’s most human. Image from Marvel Entertainment The results of AGE OF ULTRON and CIVIL WAR show us a man whose obsession for doing good has cost him not just his life but his own friendships and loyalties. In INFINITY WAR, Stark remains one of the few surviving characters and his role as a leader remains spotlighted. MCU Stark has become a figurehead character, serving as a mentor to new heroes such as Spider-Man. With the arrival of ENDGAME, Tony Stark’s importance once again comes into play. The lingering question is what will become of Tony Stark after ENDGAME? Tony’s Post-ENDGAME Fate Many speculate his death and I do predict that if this is the end for Tony his death will be a worthy sacrifice and an example of his heroism. If Tony Stark’s arc does conclude in ENDGAME that his story will celebrate his redemption and growth. If he lives, however, I can picture Tony Stark continuing to serve as an overarching figurehead for the MCU and being a featured staple in films to come. Image from Marvel Entertainment Regardless of his fate, Tony Stark will always remain one of the MCU’s key figures and one of its most complex. His impact has been felt considerably throughout the franchise and his presence in ENDGAME will no doubt be significant. Also, can we just agree that we all secretly want to be as cool as Tony? I know I do. Captain America’s Avengers’ Journey: From Star Spangled Man… Steve Rogers Avengers’ Journey to ENDGAME is arguably one of the more inspiring ones. Starting during the chaos of WWII, Steve Rogers wished for nothing more than to serve and protect his country. However, his physical limitations kept him from enlistment. However, Doctor Abraham Erskine sees his heart and strong morally good character. He brings Steve to the SSR where Steve agrees to be the test subject of Erskine’s Super Soldier Serum. Image from Marvel Entertainment The serum works for Steve, but when Nazi organization Hydra assassinates Erskine, Steve becomes the only Super Soldier ever. From that moment on, Steve defended his country as Captain America, fighting back the Red Skull and Hydra. He goes so far as to sacrifice himself, crashing a Hydra bomber set for major cities in the icy depths below. However, the serum keeps him alive, which is how he is then recovered and revived by SHIELD years later in the present to join the Avengers in their fight against Loki. …To Timeless Immovable Patriot Steve does his best to adapt in the present, though he often feels like he doesn’t belong. The love of his life from WWII, Agent Peggy Carter, is initially still alive, though she has aged while Steve has not. In time, she does pass away and Steve loses a further connection to his own time. When Hydra reveals themselves to be secretly controlling Hydra, Steve does the right thing. He doesn’t spare parts of SHIELD, lest he unknowingly leave Hydra’s corruption alive as well. No, he takes it all down, thus ensuring the defeat of Hydra, though many in the government would most likely wish otherwise. After the events of AGE OF ULTRON, the government came to the conclusion that powered people like the Avengers need oversight and regulation. This doesn’t work for Steve. He trusts his heart and instincts about what’s right. He doesn’t want to be told what’s right by any institution with fluctuating agendas. Even though this splits the Avengers and puts him at odds with Tony, he doesn’t waver from what he feels is right. In INFINITY WAR, Steve and those who followed him rejoin the remaining Avengers on Earth to protect Vision from Thanos. While Vision wants them to destroy him and the Mind Stone with it, Steve opts to protect him, unwilling to trade lives. Again, Steve does what right. Every time. No matter the odds or obstacles. Steve’s Post-ENDGAME Fate There’s a pretty strong chance that ENDGAME will be the last chapter for Captain America. ENDGAME will see more than a few things come to a close for his character arc, such as reconnecting and reconciling with Tony. We also know he’ll be getting his stars, stripes, and shield back after discarding them after CIVIL WAR. He will once again look every bit the shining beacon of inspiring hope, determination, and justice he’s always been. Image from Marvel Entertainment Whether his end comes by death, retirement, or somehow getting a happy ending with Peggy, Captain America end will hopefully be satisfying and inspiring to others to keep fighting the good fight and doing what’s right no matter what. Thor’s Avengers’ Journey: Rocky Start To Thunderous Applause When Thor first showed up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I wasn’t too thrilled with the character. He was never a favorite of mine. It didn’t seem like the movies would do anything to change my mind either. Flash forward to AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR and Thor is now one of my favorite Avengers. Image from Marvel Entertainment Though all six of the MCU’s original Avengers have had meaningful character progression, none have had to tread a darker path than Thor. Sure, his first two film outings were somewhat bland, and RAGNAROK hardly dealt with any dark storytelling, but all that changed with INFINITY WAR. That’s when I realized just how grim and depressing Thor’s arc has been. It could be argued that a man with nothing left to lose is the most dangerous of them all. Plus, when that man is actually a God who calls upon the lightning at will, you’ll find yourself with a recipe for destruction. Thor has lost his friends and family, essentially all the things that helped give his life purpose. All he’s left with, following the Decimation, is vengeance. It’s miraculous to discover such a powerful arc for a character who seemingly never really had one. Thor’s progression through the MCU never felt all that significant to me. Sure, I loved seeing him humble up in THOR, but he essentially had no character arc in THE DARK WORLD. RAGNAROK worked wonders to reimagine the character for a modern audience. Even then, Thor never landed firmly with me. It was, again, until INFINITY WAR highlighted just how gruesome Thor’s journey has been. Thor’s Post-ENDGAME Fate Thor’s path is still fueled by rage and a need for vengeance. Moving into AVENGERS: ENDGAME, I get the sense these points will receive a great deal of focus. I also expect them to be broken down; I hope being back with his allies on Earth will help to ground Thor even more, helping him overcome his struggles. Though he was probably one of the least interesting Avengers early on, Thor’s journey leading up to AVENGERS: ENDGAME has proven to be the grimmest of them all. In every one of his appearances, Thor has slowly inched along this dark path, growing little by little into the scarred warrior he has become today. Though Thor may have initially been a somewhat bland and unrelatable character, he’s evolved into one of the MCU’s most powerful and tragic heroes. Image from Marvel Entertainment Whatever the future holds for the God of Thunder all seemingly hinges on the events of AVENGERS: ENDGAME. Will Thor emerge as king? Or will he perish, as so many have before him? I’m absurdly excited to find out. The Incredible Hulk’s Avengers’ Journey: Puny Start on His Own… In THE INCREDIBLE HULK, we are shown Bruce Banner’s origin through the title sequence and are offered further explanation as the film progresses. Bruce Banner along with Betty Ross are conducting experiments involving radiation which General Thaddeus Ross oversaw. The experiments they were conducting on Bruce himself resulted in the birth of the Hulk. Bruce then went on the run, fearing for his life since he is the only living proof of General Ross’ failure. Image from Marvel Entertainment …To Smashing Success With The Avengers The next time we see Banner after is in THE AVENGERS. S.H.I.E.L.D. tracks him down and Black Widow brings Bruce to the Helicarrier, where he meets the rest of the team. Hulk fights alongside his fellow Avengers against Loki and the Chitauri forces. But Banner has had a good couple of years, working with Tony at Stark Industries, no longer having to be on the run. That is, until the event of AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON. When Ultron attacks, Banner once again fights alongside the Avengers, only this time when the battle is over, Banner does not return to Stark Industries. Instead, he flies away in a Quinjet while under the control of the Hulk. Banner for two years is M.I.A. until Thor finds himself on Sakaar where he battles the Hulk in gladiator combat. The two, of course, reconcile quickly and the Hulk helps Thor battle Hela. He then travels with Thor, along with the rest of the Asgardians, to Earth. Before they get to Earth, however, Thanos intercepts them, thus initiating the events of AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR. During their conflict with Thanos throughout INFINITY WAR, something was different between Banner and the Hulk. While usually the Hulk would be unleashed at the slightest hint of Banner’s rising heart rate, this time the Hulk refused to come out at all. Bruce’s Post-ENDGAME Fate And now here we are. AVENGERS: ENDGAME is right around the corner and Banner and the Hulk, though sharing a body, could not be further apart. There’s a theory that ENDGAME will be the unveiling of Professor Hulk, but no one knows for sure. If the Hulk and Banner do resolve their inner turmoil, where will they end up after the final showdown with Thanos? Perhaps they died in the conflict. However unlikely, it is possible Banner won’t make it to see Phase 4 of the MCU. Maybe Hulk and Banner find a way back to Sakaar where they were treated like kings? I would say that would be Hulk’s ideal option. Image from Marvel Entertainment However, what may be the most likely option is Banner ending up right back where S.H.I.E.L.D. found him at the beginning of THE AVENGERS. On the run, unsafe wherever he goes, and never staying anywhere for too long. If Banner went back on the run after ENDGAME we would get a soft reboot of the Hulk without undermining his development thus far. Banner would be free to rejoin the MCU at any point while also having the freedom to be a part of it. Overall, Banner has been through one heck of a time since his failed lab experiment and it doesn’t look like it’ll get any easier for him for at least another film. And, man, am I excited to see it. Black Widow’s Avengers’ Journey: A Fighter For A Family She Never Thought She’d Have Black Widow has made her appearance in six movies since the release of IRON MAN 2. She begins as a secretary with a secret skill set and ends up becoming a badass Avenger. This skill set is revealed in IRON MAN 2. She managed to take down numerous guards to Happy’s one. Image from Marvel Entertainment She continued to scissor kick her way through foes in AVENGERS, THE WINTER SOLDIER, AGE OF ULTRON, CIVIL WAR, and INFINITY WAR. Every kick and punch was for a reason. She was fighting for those closest to her, the Avengers. Furthermore, many are excited about the upcoming Black Widow movie. The film is still in development, but the demand has always been there. The original Avenger and Hawkeye are the only ones not to have their own movies which they rightfully deserve. That will change soon for both of them (Hawkeye has a series on the way). We have seen Natasha fight for the one she loves and we will continue to do so in ENDGAME. Natasha did not grow up with people close to her. Her childhood taught her to be a weapon with no close connections. Now, she fights alongside her family. She cares about the ones she is fighting with and for because it is what her job is. Even in CIVIL WAR when she was against close friends, she sympathized. Black Widow is a formidable foe with a heart of gold. Natasha’s Post-ENDGAME Fate ENDGAME will see the return of Thanos and the remaining Avengers. Black Widow will surely take up the fight against the mad titan along with her Avenger family. We are not sure of her fate after this chapter, (her film could be a prequel) but many would love to see her continue afterward. Image from Marvel Entertainment She has become a role model for women as a leading Avenger and one of the women of the original six. She has fought her way through crowded markets, alien-ravaged streets, and desolate airports. Black Widow has a place to stay after AVENGERS: ENDGAME. Hawkeye’s Avengers’ Journey: Misses The Mark With Mind Control… Clint Barton’s Avengers’ Journey is one that is comparably smaller than that of his fellow Avengers. However, it might be one of the more surprising arcs. We first see Hawkeye working as a SHIELD agent with Agent Coulson in the first THOR film. It was a quick cameo, but he made his presence felt, grabbing a bow instead of a rifle before taking a sniper position above Thor. Image from Marvel Entertainment We then see him running for security at Project Pegasus, where SHIELD’s is experimenting with and monitoring the Tesseract. When Loki makes his arrival, he uses his staff to manipulate and sway Clint to his side. It wasn’t until after Clint attacked the Helicarrier on Loki’s behalf that Black Widow was able to set him straight. He gets back on the right side of the Avengers and fights Loki and his forces. …Hits The Mark As Family Man and Mentor After this, we don’t see Clint’s on-screen Avenger’s Journey continue until the next Avengers film, AGE OF ULTRON. When Ultron joins forces with the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, they work to tear the Avengers apart. Their initial conflict left the team compromised, so Clint took them to a safe house. We then learned that Clint’s safe house was his farm with his family. Clint is a husband and a father, his motivations in being an Avenger is his desire to keep his wife and kids safe. As ULTRON continues, Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver realize Ultron’s true motives and join the Avengers. Clint acts as a sort of mentor to them, setting them on the right path as the Avengers with a specific note to Scarlet Witch. We then saw Clint in CIVIL WAR joining Cap’s side against the Accords. After the government arrests him, Clint takes a deal to go under house arrest so that he can be with his family, hence his lack of presence in INFINITY WAR. Clint’s Post-ENDGAME Fate As with all the other Avengers, it’s unclear what will happen to Hawkeye after the events of ENDGAME. However, I’m inclined to think that Hawkeye Avengers’ journey will continue. His return to ENDGAME as the darkly costumed Ronin suggests that he’s undergone some extreme loss. It could very well be that his family is gone as a result of Thanos’ Decimation. Image from Marvel Entertainment Perhaps Clint gets his happy ending and gets them back? We know that Hawkeye will soon have his own series on Disney+ in which he’ll be training and mentoring the new Hawkeye Kate Bishop. Could this be because he wants to spend time with the family he just got back? We’ll have to see in a few days, but I think Hawkeye is going to be safe after ENDGAME. I will say this: if Clint’s family did disappear, Thanos is in for a world of pain and possibly an arrow to the eye.
