2019 is here and with it a ton of comic book media on the horizon. Here are the top 10 comic book movies/shows in 2019 that we can’t wait for! (in no particular order)

When: March 8th

Let’s just kick off the top 10 comic book movies/shows in 2019 with this year’s Marvel films. MCU-wise, 2019 will start with CAPTAIN MARVEL in March. Starring Brie Larson in the titular role, CAPTAIN MARVEL will take the MCU to the ’90s, before the majority of when the other films take place.

CAPTAIN MARVEL will see Carol Danvers come into her own as a hero while discovering who she really is alongside a young Nick Fury and SHIELD. The film will also give us our first introduction to the Skrull Empire, green shapeshifters who are at war with the Kree, of which Carol is a member of at the film’s start.

Carol Danvers will also be in the next AVENGERS film, so expect some sort of explanation for as to where she’s been all this time. And speaking of the next AVENGERS film.

When: April 26th

Not long after CAPTAIN MARVEL, and we’ll be getting AVENGERS: ENDGAME. ENDGAME will be the conclusive chapter of everything in the MCU thus far.

In the last AVENGERS, Thanos wins. He gets what he wants. The Infinity Stones all together allowed him to snap half of all life out of existence, thus saving the universe in his mind. ENDGAME will see the AVENGERS dealing with the fallout and finding some sort of way to save those that they lost and defeat Thanos once and for all.

This is literally as high as the stakes could get. There will most likely be a high price to pay on the part of the heroes, and I would expect that this will be the last hurrah for some such as Captain America or Iron Man.

It’s also rumored that time travel will be a factor, which means that we’ll most likely be seeing some MCU from the past. If that’s true, what better way to conclude this era?

3. Comic Book Movies/Shows In 2019: SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME

When: July 5th

If ENDGAME is a concluding chapter for the MCU thus far, then SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME is a new chapter for the MCU’s future. FAR FROM HOME will be our first look into where the MCU will go after ENDGAME.

FAR FROM HOME will be taking Peter Parker away from Queens and overseas. According to reports of a trailer that exclusive to attendees at Brazil Comic-Con, Peter will be going to Europe with his friends, leaving his suit behind. While there, Nick Fury enlists his help with elemental beings causing destruction. He’s also recruited another hero, Mysterio, who knows about the beings.

Jake Gyllenhaal will be playing Mysterio. Since Mysterio is a classic Spider-Man villain from the comics, I assume that Mysterio knows about the elementals because he’s controlling them, thus giving the pretense of being a hero. It should be a pretty interesting plot, and I’m a super huge fan of Tom Holland’s Peter Parker.

4. Comic Book Movies/Shows In 2019: SHAZAM!

When: April 5th

Warner Bros./DC is having a lot of success right now with AQUAMAN. Why? Because it’s colorful, funny, and has a hero who isn’t always dark and broody. So Warner Bros. should be pretty excited that they decided to continue the trend with SHAZAM! The film stars Zachary Levi as Billy Batson, a young foster kid who meets a wizard. The wizard gives him powers, so that when he says the word “Shazam,” he becomes a fully grown adult superhero with the powers of the gods.

Billy initially freaks out. He then realizes that he can be a superhero. The trailer shows him goofing off with his powers and having a blast. SHAZAM! is going to be the Tom Hanks film BIG combined with SUPERMAN. Who wouldn’t want to see that?

5. Comic Book Movies/Shows In 2019: JOKER

When: October 4th

Going in the opposite direction of light and funny, Warner Bros. will also release JOKER this year. JOKER will be an origin film about the Clown Prince of Crime. JOKER will also be separate from the DC’s cinematic universe continuity. This is what will allow Joaquin Phoenix to be playing the Joker as opposed to the latest Joker actor we’ve seen, Jared Leto.

Apparently, the JOKER film will see a man by the name of Arthur Fleck failing as a comedian. He then turns to a life of crime in Gotham City, soon becoming the Joker. The film is also rumored to feature Robert De Niro in some sort of role. I’m very excited for this movie. I do think that Warner Bros. could have a lot of success with movies such as this: films based on DC characters/properties, but not necessarily having to be beholden to the already established cinematic universe.

6. Final Season of GOTHAM

When: January 3rd

The fifth and final season of FOX’s GOTHAM has actually just aired its season premiere. A combination of the NO MAN’S LAND and ZERO YEAR comic arcs, the final season of GOTHAM is entitled LEGEND OF THE DARK KNIGHT. While this show has had some ups and some serious downs, the final season has promised to transform the prototype versions of the characters we love into their final forms. This includes Bruce Wayne becoming the Batman.

So far, the season premiere has already given us the beginnings of the relationship between Gordon and Bruce as protectors on a spotlight rooftop. The only thing missing currently is the mask and the bats. Be prepared to see Gotham City shaken to its core before it settles as the Gotham we know in the comic books. It should be a wild and fun ride, despite any hang-ups you might have from some of the rocky seasons past. It will be a smaller season as well, with only 12 episodes to wrap the series up.

7. Season 6 of SHIELD

When: Summer 2019

In likewise fashion, Marvel will be taking a similar route with its series on ABC, AGENTS OF SHIELD. SHIELD will also have a smaller season with only 13 episodes. When we last saw the agents, Coulson was being dropped off in Tahiti, the real Tahiti, to spend his last days in comfort before dying. Melinda May went with him as well. The rest of the agents were going off to look for Agent Fitz, who is somewhere is suspended animation.

Will the new season feature Coulson, or will he have already passed away? Maybe there’s a way to keep him alive? Will the agents find Fitz? It’s too soon to tell, as we haven’t had much information to go on. All we know is that the next season will be coming this summer.

8. Comic Book Movies/Shows In 2019: DARK PHOENIX

When: June 7th

2019 will also see the release of DARK PHOENIX. DARK PHOENIX will likely be the last and final X-MEN film set in the current continuity and produced by 20th CENTURY FOX.

DARK PHOENIX will be the franchise’s second shot at the DARK PHOENIX arc, the first try being the third X-MEN: THE LAST STAND. It… wasn’t a good one. This attempt will be with the newer cast with the setting in the ’90s. If the trailer is any indication, it will be a much, much more accurate telling. I myself have really enjoyed the latest cast, and hopefully, DARK PHOENIX will be a good story for them to operate in before Disney most likely reboots the whole franchise to integrate it with the MCU after they purchase 20th Century Fox.

9. Comic Book Movies/Shows In 2019: HELLBOY

When: April 12th

Speaking of reboots, HELLBOY is getting one this year with David Harbour in the titular role. The trailer came out recently and looks to be pretty light and humorous as Hellboy fights the forces of darkness.

The trailer shows him working with the B.P.R.D, the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense. Being a demon himself, it’s hard for others to see him as an ally, but that’s what makes him the best option to save mankind. Harbour’s portrayal looks hilarious, and HELLBOY looks to be like it will be a pretty good fresh start for the franchise.

10. Comic Book Movies/Shows In 2019: GLASS

When: January 18th

Also coming soon is M. Night Shyamalan’s GLASS, bringing two narratives of his past films together to form a trilogy. In a surprise post-credits scene after Shyamalan’s SPLIT, it was revealed that the events and characters in SPLIT share a world with that in UNBREAKABLE. UNBREAKABLE stars Bruce Willis as security guard David Dunn who has supernatural abilities. He also crosses paths with the evil Mr. Glass.

SPLIT stars James McAvoy as Kevin Wendell Crumb, a man with 24 split personalities, including one that gives him supernatural gifts turning him into the strong and unstoppable Beast.

GLASS will be the latest addition to the trilogy, with its focus on Mr. Glass, played by Samual L. Jackson. The film will see Mr. Glass orchestrating events and manipulating both Dunn and the Beast, pitting them against each other. This surprise trilogy is incredible and is a sort of deconstruction of the comic book and superhero genre in media. It’s sure to be really interesting and, having seen the first two, I’m definitely intrigued.
