The 10-year anniversary of the beloved CODE GEASS series is underway! And with it, the animation studio Sunrise has been celebrating in many different ways. They’ve already announced a third season for later this year, new films, and plenty of upcoming projects. And now, according to Kadokawa’s website, a new manga will be released on June 26th! The manga is named “The Definitive Version.” It begins when protagonists Lelouch and Suzaku start their Zero Requiem Plan, which occurs during the last few episodes of the series in 2008.

What to Expect from the New CODE GEASS Manga

CODE GEASS originally aired from 2006-2008. It follows the story of Lelouch Vi Britania, an exiled prince of the Britanian Kingdom. Through a mysterious girl named C.C., Lelouch obtains the power of “Geass.” This ocular ability forces people to obey his demands just once; after this, his ability becomes useless. Luckily enough, Lelouch possesses genius intellect which helps overcome this caveat. He blends these attributes together to lead a rebellion against the Britanian Empire.

There isn’t a tremendous amount of information available yet on the upcoming manga, but we know a few things. For starters, we have a pretty cool manga cover to obsess over the next couple of weeks.

The cover art teases Lelouch, followed by his sister Nunnaly, and Suzaku all the way on the right. In addition, the cover features the quote: “Look, world. And you should wait. The arrival of the moment of truth.” This quote is in reference to the outcome of Lelouch and Suzaku’s Zero Requiem Plan, which attempted to establish long-term peace in the CODE GEASS universe.

Why Do We Still Call Shinji Ikari Whiny?

In addition to the manga, CODE GEASS released three films in Japan as part of the 10-year anniversary celebration in October 2017, February 2018, and May 2018. The CODE GEASS: LELOUCH OF THE REBELLION trilogy (THE AWAKENING PATH, THE REBELLION PATH, and THE IMPERIAL PATH) recaps the series’ 50 episodes and adds in never-before-seen moments to the anime. This is great news for newcomers to anime or fans who watched the series during its original airing. The new movies offer a succinct way to catch-up while enjoying the many plot-twists of the show. Funimation recently acquired the license to the movies and will produce English dubs in the near future.

Hope for Similar Success to a Classic Series

As a whole, many anime fans and critics hold CODE GEASS in high regards. The series has won many awards, such as “Best Anime Series” at the 2007  Tokyo International Anime Fair. CODE GEASS also did extremely well in sales which further acknowledges it’s popularity. By November 2008, the CODE GEASS franchise sold over one million DVD and Blue-Ray discs.

There’s no denying the success CODE GEASS had in the past, but anime fans question if it’s new material will face similar success. The second season’s finale wrapped the series up nicely and created an unforgettable moment between Lelouch and Nunnaly. A third season and new manga don’t appear to be necessary. Furthermore, it could disrupt the fond memories people have of the series if the manga and anime don’t live up to expectations. Personally, I think it’s a good thing. There are still a few unanswered questions about Lelouch I’d like to see answered and sequels will solve this problem.

Nonetheless, get excited if you’re a CODE GEASS fan! More content of a great series is definitely reason to celebrate. With any luck, the new manga will hold people over until the highly anticipated third season later this year.
