It’s starting! Entertainment Weekly revealed a CAPTAIN MARVEL first look with official photos! This means that we can expect the promotional campaign for the film to finally get rolling! That being said, what can we learn about the film from these photos? Let’s find out!

CAPTAIN MARVEL First Look: Red and Blue Suit!

Yesterday, actress Brie Larson sent out a tweet to Entertainment Weekly, telling them she was bored and wanting to break the internet. EW’s response said they agreed and that she should meet them today at noon. Sure enough, EW’s latest issue presents the first official look at Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel on the cover! Naturally, fans are freaking out so let’s consider the internet…broke!

While earlier set photos show Carol Danvers in a green and black suit, it looks as though she will eventually take on the more iconic red and blue look as the film progresses. Several fans will find this comforting, as this was a potential concern. While she still doesn’t have the iconic sash from the comics, perhaps it could be an addition later on.

CAPTAIN MARVEL First Look: Mar-Vell and Starforce!

Another one of the photos gives us our first look at Starforce, a strike team led by Mar-Vell that Carol apparently is a part of. We also see other members of the team such a Minn-Erva and Korath. (Yes, that Korath from the first GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY.) However, CAPTAIN MARVEL is set during the 90’s, so Korath’s participation on this team is before the events previously seen in that film.

The squad can be seen wearing the same military uniforms, the green and black style we see Carol wearing in those set photos. EW reveals that CAPTAIN MARVEL will be skipping her origin of how she gets her powers becoming half-human and half-Kree. Audiences will be seeing her already in space and in the mix when they first see her. EW goes on to say that Kree leader Mar-Vell, played by Jude Law, sees Carol as a “mentee” who can learn from him how to control her powers and emotions.

If the origin is to be skipped, Mar-Vell’s presence in the film seems to be more than previously assumed. It will be interesting to see how his relationship with Carol progresses over time. The concept of Carol needing to learn how to control her powers and emotions is one that will be really intriguing, considering she is going to be the most powerful superhero in the MCU to date.

CAPTAIN MARVEL First Look: The Return (Kinda) of Ronan!

We also get an image of former GUARDIANS villain, Ronan the Accuser. However, EW shares that at this point in the MCU timeline, Ronan is not the Kree fanatic he is down the line. In CAPTAIN MARVEL, Ronan will still be a high ranking commander of the Kree forces.

We will most likely see Starforce reporting to Ronan on their activities and receiving orders from him. This also means it is very probable that we’ll get to see the Kree homeworld of Hala. Could this be where Carol’s been all this time? Possibly, but you’d still need a reason for her absence in several major threat events, both those aimed and Earth and beyond. We’ll have to wait and see for a definitive answer on that one.

CAPTAIN MARVEL First Look: Skrulls!

EW also provides the first-ever look at the Skrull alien race, whom the Kree will be at war with. Skrulls are a shapeshifting, war-mongering race. Their introduction into the MCU is concerning for a number of reasons due to their ability to shapeshift. Combined with the knowledge that they were at least a presence in the 90s, the question has to be asked: Who in the MCU currently, is perhaps a Skrull in disguise?

It’s that kind of plot-twist type scenario that fans should fear and seems pretty hard for Marvel Studios to pass up. What if your favorite hero has always been an undercover, evil alien?! AHHHH!

EW also shares that Ben Mendelsohn will be playing Talos, the Skrull’s leader. We also see him taking on the form of a human, and EW reveals that he will be infiltrating SHIELD. And speaking of SHIELD…

CAPTAIN MARVEL First Look: Young Nick Fury!

CAPTAIN MARVEL will be featuring Nick Fury in his younger years. Using that signature de-aging Disney tech, audiences will be seeing a young Samuel L. Jackson playing Nick Fury as a desk jockey before he became the director of SHIELD and had to deal with events and people of the super variety. It’ll also be before he loses his left eye. Perhaps this film will be where he loses it?

“Last time I trusted someone, I lost an eye.”

This is what Fury told Captain America in WINTER SOLDIER. Maybe we’ll get to find out the details of who he trusted? We’ll see.

First Look: Carol Still a Pilot, Working With SHIELD?

The last few photos show us that we’ll still be seeing Carol on Earth in some form (could be flashbacks?)

One photo shows her in civilian clothes such as a Nine Inch Nails shirt and Jacket. Being the 90’s, Nine Inch Nails is definitely appropriate. She’s also wearing a hat with the SHIELD logo on it. This suggests that she has interactions with SHIELD. We can already assume she’s dealt with Fury, as Fury pulls out that space pager to call her at the end of INFINITY WAR. However, this CAPTAIN MARVEL first look does add to the concept that she may very well be SHIELD’s first major interaction with a super-powered being.

We also see Carol in a fighter jet, as she was with the Air Force before gaining her powers. Perhaps she’s still a pilot from time to time? More than likely we are getting some flashbacks to this time in her life. Additionally, we also get a photo of Maria Rambeau, played by Lashana Lynch, who’s also a pilot. EW shares that her call sign is Photon, and that she has a young daughter as well.
