DC Entertainment has graciously given ComicsVerse an exclusive sneak peek at BLACK LIGHTNING: COLD DEAD HANDS #3! Jefferson Pierce’s move back to his hometown of Cleveland has been anything but uneventful. A criminal organization with high-tech weapons and a new villain are putting Pierce’s heroics to the test!

Pierce has stepped back into his identity as the vigilante Black Lightning to combat a new group, the Weatherman. Despite their ridiculous name, these criminals aren’t the real threat. The high-tech weapons they’re packing are spreading across Cleveland, ending up in all the wrong hands. Meanwhile, the distributor of said weaponry is a new Tobias Whale, the uncle (and murderer) of Black Lightning’s old archenemy.

BLACK vol. 1 Review: Emancipation or Retaliation?

While at a memorial service for his father, Pierce learned from his friend in the police department that the force doesn’t trust Black Lightning. To make matters worse, Tobias has Black Lightning framed for the murder of a group of Weathermen. With the police and public opinion turned against him, Black Lightning’s job has become a whole lot harder. Fortunately, Pierce still has his job as a high school teacher to keep him occupied while he investigates the Weathermen’s weapons.

BLACK LIGHTNING: COLD DEAD HANDS hasn’t been a series that shies away from relevant social issues, tackling both racism and gun control. Although the first issue only addressed these topics on a more surface level, the second installment wasn’t holding back.

Black Lightning’s infamy has easily grabbed headlines while putting him in the crosshairs of bigotted, trigger-happy police officers. Meanwhile, the sci-fi guns have started to make their way from the hands of criminals and into those of innocent civilians, and their children.

So in the preview below, BLACK LIGHTNING: COLD DEAD HANDS #3 clearly shows that it isn’t stopping its commentary. A new supervillain, White Thunder, attacks a police transport carrying a family that purchased a sci-fi gun. Deafened by the villain’s sonic waves, the family and officers are unable to hear each other in the chaos.

The officer shoots and kills both the mother and father of two boys, who fled with the deadly weapon. All the while, Pierce narrates the scene, informing the reader that the police never informed the public of what really happened.
