By the time AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR hits theaters, it will be ten years since Tony Stark began his journey and gave birth to the MCU. It was a story that has been ten years in the making over the course of sixteen films. It has been a long time, but the audience has gotten too comfortable. We know that whichever character is going to be in the next Avengers film already so, we don’t worry. While all the films are still good, the stakes are never high.

Avengers: Infinity War

Raising the Stakes

CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR had the highest stakes, but the only major thing was War Machine’s broken spine. Sure, the Avengers are disbanded, but that is only until the next AVENGERS film. Rhodey will probably walk using the War Machine suit, no harm no foul. There are not enough stakes, that is why I can almost guarantee someone will die in INFINITY WAR.

Thanos is too big of a threat for everyone to walk away. Vision has to have the mind stone ripped from his head for Thanos to use the full power of the infinity gauntlet…so he is down. I infer that the deaths will not stop there. This is going to be one of the biggest events in cinema history. It is not going to achieve that by playing it safe. Tony Stark or Steve Rogers will make it to the end of this film. One of these two pillars of everything that Marvel and Disney have built together will fall, and their death will remind everyone that these films do have stakes. Not just people, but heroes will die. And that’s extremely important.

The Death Of An Avenger

Last year’s BATMAN V SUPERMAN rushed it with Superman’s death. It was exactly how not to kill the main character, even if he is coming back in JUSTICE LEAGUE. With the MCU, both of these characters have earned it.

Steve Rogers, who has been the ideal of morality, earnestness and doing whatever it takes to get the job done the right way, has fought a long war. A soldier dying in the war to end all wars is a fitting end to an icon of what being the good guy truly means.

Tony Stark, on the other hand, has not always been the hero we now know. Tony’s journey from the “Playboy, billionaire, philanthropist” to where he is now is some of the most incredible character development in cinema history. Dying to protect the world that he has done every single thing in his power to protect, including bringing together all of the Earth’s mightiest heroes, would be a truly prodigious and inspiring way to end that character’s story.

There Will Be Blood…Probably

While I do believe that there will be a significant death, possibly a few, in INFINITY WAR, it is not a guarantee. Disney may not allow Marvel to do that just because these characters make them so much money. Or Marvel just simply does not want to, I am not sure. All I can honestly say is, I have an awful feeling that we will lose an Avenger next year.

There have been a lot of rumors regarding the expiring contracts of Chris Evans (Captain America) and Robert Downey Jr (Iron Man). I would not put it past Marvel Studios and Disney to purposely throw us a curveball to keep something as serious as the death of a major character hidden.

Both actors are confirmed to appear in both of the next 2 AVENGERS films. It is possible that they may not die until the currently untitled AVENGERS 4, which was originally intended to be AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR PART 2.

Who do you think is going to bite the dust in the next AVENGERS film? Will Hawkeye’s unbelievable luck finally run out? Will Ant-Man accidentally get stepped on in battle? Tell me what you think in the comments below!
