At NYCC 2015, I had the opportunity to speak with one of my favorite writers in the industry, Alex de Campi. Well known for her graphic novels, SMOKE and ASHES, as well as her digital comic, VALENTINE, de Campi took the time out of her con to talk with me about her work on GRINDHOUSE: DOORS OPEN AT MIDNIGHT, NO MERCY, and ARCHIE VS. PREDATOR.

We kicked things off by discussing where she finds her inspiration for GRINDHOUSE, published by Dark Horse Comics, and her love for the grindhouse genre as a whole before moving on to her current ongoing series, NO MERCY, published by Image Comics. The comic follows a group of incoming Princeton freshman who go on a trip to Central America and, well, nothing seems to go their way on a trip complete with a bus accident, coyote attacks, and…emojis?! De Campi spoke about her creative process on the book and offered us a tease of the second arc that started in  December.

Our next topic of conversation revolved around her work on the Archie/Dark Horse crossover hit, ARCHIE VS. PREDATOR. Her desire in writing the comic was to bring the craziest possible scenario to Riverdale and to finally give Dilton Doiley the moment he so rightly deserved. When asked if she’d ever return to writing Archie and the gang, she wouldn’t confirm or deny but did mention that she had a few other projects coming out in the future from Image and Dark Horse that have yet to be announced. A prolific speaker and extremely well-versed in the medium of comics, Alex de Campi was an absolute pleasure to speak to and I’m looking forward to more of her work. Check out her work at!
