Well, its official guys, the Netflix/Marvel shows have come to an end… on Netflix, anyway. JESSICA JONES season 3 was the last season of a Netflix/Marvel show to air. The season itself was well done in terms of JESSICA JONES finale. However, the Netflix/Marvel shows have left much to be desired.  From the Bullseye cliffhanger left by DAREDEVIL to the setup of more adventures to come in JESSICA JONES, there are still many stories that can be told with these characters. Let’s investigate the possible futures for the Netflix/Marvel characters that we would love to see!

Picking Up Where They Left Off on Hulu

Just because the Netflix/Marvel shows have been cancelled on Netflix does not mean that their continuity is necessarily lost. Hulu recently announced that they will be producing two new Marvel shows in the not-too-distant future. Those two shows will be GHOST RIDER and HELLSTROM. Plus, Hulu currently airs the very popular THE RUNAWAYS. While we don’t know much about GHOST RIDER and HELLSTROM, based on the source material, we can assume they will be darker in tone. Also, even though THE RUNAWAYS stars teenage heroes, the content is still very mature (evil secret society, human sacrifice, all that fun stuff).

These darker-toned Hulu/Marvel shows could perfectly incorporate the continuity of the dark and gritty Netflix/Marvel shows into their own. If Hulu were to pick up where Netflix left off with our heroes, then we would get proper finales and/or continuations of the Netflix/Marvel shows on Hulu.

Continuing the Netflix/Marvel shows on Hulu would be the best case scenario in my mind. However, perhaps an already existing Marvel show will give our heroes new life.

CLOAK AND DAGGER to the Rescue!

Near the end of CLOAK AND DAGGER season 2, Cloak mentions Luke Cage and Karen Page by name. What that mention means to us is that CLOAK AND DAGGER takes place within the same continuity as the Netflix/Marvel shows. So, technically every Marvel show takes place within the continuity of the MCU. However, there has always been a disconnect between the movies and the shows. The events of the films don’t really affect the shows, beyond AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D., and vice versa. Therefore, the best way to look at the shows is as a smaller, contained universe within the wider MCU.

That being said, the contained universe within the shows haven’t explored that many crossovers beyond THE DEFENDERS. If the Netflix/Marvel characters were to team up with Cloak and Dagger on their show, Marvel Television could grow their T.V. show shared universe. Not only that, but we would be able to return to the Netflix/Marvel characters we fell in love with. The crossover would be a short lived solution to the future of the Netflix/Marvel characters, but it would still be a lot of fun.

The open-ended storylines of the Netflix/Marvel characters could be explored and concluded in their guest-appearance episodes on CLOAK AND DAGGER. While it would be awesome to get closure on our characters through another show, perhaps there is a more direct way to wrap up the Netflix/Marvel story arcs.

THE DEFENDERS Season 2

Similarly to the solution offered in the previous section, a second season of THE DEFENDERS would also be a limited future for the Netflix/Marvel characters. If done correctly, though, THE DEFENDERS S2 could be the perfect final send-off for our heroes. Whether the season airs on Hulu, Disney+, or Freeform is irrelevant. It is what the show runners do with this would be swan song season is what matters. They would need to go back to what made the shows great in the first place: grounded, street level grittiness. THE DEFENDERS season 1 went a little too big with their plot. The Netflix/Marvel heroes don’t need to be dealing with possible world-ending threats. I mean let’s be real, if The Hand were really that big of a deal then The Avengers would just come in and take them out like that *snaps fingers* (pun intended).

No, what season 2 could tell is more of a CIVIL WAR type story.

The Plot

The show could open with Hellcat using her powers to escape The Raft. Bullseye, back in action, could be out and about as an antihero, killing bad guys and trying to be a “hero” in his own right. The actions taken by Bullseye could get the attention of The Punisher, who would need his and Hellcat’s help in taking down a giant Mafia base *cough* Silvermane *cough*.

In the end, the final showdown could be the Defenders vs the antiheroes. How cool would that be?! THE DEFENDERS S2 would be a grounded, gritty, and character driven season. The season would also serve to wrap up any open ended storylines. Unfortunately, there is always the possibility that any unfinished stories in the Netflix/Marvel shows could remain that way in their future.

Complete Reboot

As sad as it would be to have the lives of our Netflix/Marvel heroes erased, the possibility is all too real. However, if a complete reboot were to occur, it is likely that some of the Netflix/Marvel characters would have their own films in the MCU! A Daredevil and Spider-Man team up movie could happen! Dr. Strange could encounter an established (and comic accurate) Iron Fist! Even if they don’t get their own films, they could pull a War Machine and just guest star in multiple. Once the characters are well established to fans in the MCU, they could even have their own Disney+ shows. These shows could then continue with the newly established continuity.

As a fan of the Netflix/Marvel shows, I personally do not prefer this option. However, if a reboot were to happen then it could be pretty awesome if Marvel Studios handled it correctly. What if we’re completely off, though? What if the future of the Netflix/Marvel shows don’t have anything to do with multimedia format? Let’s take these characters full circle, shall we?

Comic Book Continuations

That’s right, folks, what if Marvel continued telling the stories brought to life by Netflix through comic book continuations? The continuation comics would not be connected to any current comic continuity. They would be complete stand-alone books that would pick up right where Netflix left them. The cool thing about this proposed future is that it would introduce a lot of people who are fans of the show to the world of comics. Speaking for myself, I am a fan of both comics and the Netflix/Marvel shows, but perhaps many fans of the shows were just never that into comics. Producing comic book continuations of the shows could be an easy way for people to start reading comics. Introducing people to comics while continuing the shows’ storylines would be enough to make me happy.

We’ll See Our Netflix/Marvel Heroes Again

There are a lot of different ways Marvel could continue telling the stories of the Netflix/Marvel characters. It’s unknown whether or not those stories told on Netflix will continue. However, a safe bet is that no matter what Marvel decides to do with these characters, we’ll be seeing them again soon. Marvel only has to wait two years after the cancellation of the Netflix/Marvel shows to have full access to the characters again. Once those two years are up, The Defenders will be back home with Marvel. They can then continue to tell awesome superhero stories. Regardless of what it may be, I cannot wait to find out what is in store for the future of the Netflix/Marvel characters.
