I am Sailor Moon, champion of justice! Along with POKEMON and DRAGON BALL, SAILOR MOON introduced many ’90s kids to the world of anime. We may have grown up, but our love for the magical girl classic remains. In 2014, to celebrate the 20th anniversary, we saw the reboot of the ’90s series with SAILOR MOON CRYSTAL. Now, in 2018, we are starting to see more ways to celebrate with SAILOR MOON’s 25th anniversary!

Music to My Ears

To start the festivities, the 25th-anniversary project website announced on February 15th that they will be releasing a new SAILOR MOON 25th Anniversary Memory Tribute Album. Sales start on April 4th in Japan. This album builds on the “PRETTY GUARDIAN SAILOR MOON: the 20th Anniversary Memorial Tribute” album that released in 2014.

However, the new iteration will be themed around the “image of the fighting girl.” As a magical girl anime, SAILOR MOON revolutionized the idea of the girl as the superhero. Not only can a girl be a powerful defender of Earth, but she can also still be feminine. Since the new album’s theme is the “fighting girl,” this powerful image of femininity will hopefully reflect in the music.

What Should We Expect?

The album will feature songs by many famous singers and groups in the anime community, including IRiS, Etsuko Yakushimaru, BiSH, Sonoko Inoue, SILENT SIREN, Ziyoou-Vachi, Yoko Ishida, and Gesshoku Kaigi. These artists make up a pretty diverse group. For example, IRiS consists of the voice actors for the cutesy anime and arcade game, PRIPARA. Yet, BiSH’s music tends to have strong influences from hard rock. The new collaboration album is bound to be a rich musical experience!

The Magic of Kids’ Anime

The website has sadly not released a trailer for the new album yet. But, looking at the covers of classic SAILOR MOON openings and endings on the 20th-anniversary album hints at the exciting developments to come! Out of the artists on the last album, the only repeat will be Etsuko Yakushimaru, known for her band Sotaisei Riron, as well as for the opening songs in MAWARU PENGUINDRUM and the ending song in TATAMI GALAXY. On the 20th anniversary album, she covered “Otome no Policy,” the ending of SAILOR MOON R. The original singer of “Otome no Policy,” Yoko Ishida, will also be a collaborator on the new album.

The memorial tribute album is a part of a larger celebration of the 25th anniversary. The official anniversary website has listed new commemorative merchandise, as well as exciting special events. For stateside fans of SAILOR MOON, there will also be limited screenings of the live-action musical, LE MOUVEMENT FINAL, in select theaters beginning March 10th. The musical recording comes from a performance in Osaka on October 1st, 2017.

Overall, it really seems to be an exciting time to be a fan of SAILOR MOON and its music right now! Through the artist’s interpretations of these old classics, fans will be able to think about the show in new ways. Hopefully, all of this new music inspires more people to return to their love of this everlasting magical girl legend.

The new tribute album can be purchased on the 25th-anniversary website for ¥3,000 + tax (around 28 USD) on April 4th.
