Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on Google+ Share on Reddit Share on Pinterest Share on Linkedin Share on Tumblr It’s a new year which means a whole new slew of comic book movies and TV shows is coming your way! ComicsVerse has made a list of all the films and television shows based on comic books coming out this year! We’ve tried our best to organize the films and TV shows based on when they premiere in the United States. However, some of these movies and TV shows still lack premiere dates and are listed as TBD. With that out of the way, here are all the new 2018 comic book movies and TV shows. BLACK LIGHTNING – January 16 — The CW https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RZpJeuXo2CY Greg Berlanti must be the busiest man in the comic book movie genre (OK besides Kevin Feige). Berlanti helped bring about the incredibly successful Arrowverse on The CW which consists of the shows ARROW, THE FLASH, LEGENDS OF TOMORROW, and SUPERGIRL. Now Berlanti is helping bring BLACK LIGHTNING to television with producers Mara Brock Akil and Salim Akil. BLACK LIGHTNING stars Cress Williams (PRISON BREAK) as Jefferson Pierce AKA Black Lightning. Pierce retired from his superhero life as Black Lightning nine years ago. Now Pierce lives with his family and serves as the high school principal in his daughter’s high school. However, when local gang The One Hundred threatens to splinter Pierce’s community, he is forced to return to his life as vigilante Black Lightning. BLACK LIGHTNING is set to have a 13-episode run in 2018. As of now, the show is unconnected to the Arrowverse but never say never as SUPERGIRL started unconnected as well. Nonetheless, BLACK LIGHTNING bodes well for DC in their quest to diversify their comic book catalog on television. BATMAN: GOTHAM BY GASLIGHT – January 23 Some things really benefit from being put together. These include peanut butter and jelly, Bogey and Bacall, and pencil and paper. Batman and Steampunk are examples of two things that shouldn’t work together well. However, they beautifully combine in the comic GOTHAM BY GASLIGHT by Brian Augustyn and Mike Mignola. The one-shot comic is an alternate reality in which Bruce Wayne/Batman lives in the 19th century and fights Jack the Ripper. Is DC Considering “Elseworlds” Films? Here Are 5 Films They Could Do! Now the exceptional team at Warner Bros. Animation are adapting GOTHAM BY GASLIGHT into the animated film BATMAN: GOTHAM BY GASLIGHT. The film is the third animated film in the DC animated universe to be rated R. It will boast talent like Bruce Greenwood (STAR TREK, AMERICAN CRIME STORY) as Batman and Jennifer Carpenter (DEXTER) as Selina Kyle. If you want an entertaining, unique take on the Dark Knight, you should check out BATMAN: GOTHAM BY GASLIGHT when it is available for Digital Download on January 23, 2018. BLACK PANTHER – February 16 It is strange to think that two years ago, most of the world didn’t know who Black Panther was. Chadwick Boseman (GET ON UP, MARSHALL) irreversibly changed that when he appeared in 2016’s CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR as T’Challa AKA Black Panther. Then the BLACK PANTHER movie took the world by storm by dropping two incredible trailers in 2017. Ryan Coogler, the director of films like CREED and FRUITVALE STATION, looks to show a completely new side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as we witness the amazing, Afrofuturistic world of Wakanda. The World of Wakanda Is In For A Rumble In BLACK PANTHER [Video] If this wasn’t enough to get you excited, Coogler has also assembled one of the greatest casts ever with Boseman, Forrest Whittaker, Angela Bassett, Lupita Nyong’o, Michael B. Jordan, Daniel Kaluuya, Martin Freeman, and Andy Serkis just to name a few. Much like DEADPOOL and LOGAN before it, BLACK PANTHER could reenergize the superhero genre with a fresh-take distinct from the other 2018 comic book movies. KRYPTON – March 21 Much in the vein of Fox’s GOTHAM, KRYPTON will explore the history of a classic hero’s home. Developed by David S. Goyer (DARK KNIGHT, MAN OF STEEL) and Damian Kindler (STARGATE SG-1), KRYPTON takes place 200 years before the birth of Kal-El/Superman. The show will follow Seg-El, Kal-El’s grandfather as he tries to redeem the honor of the House of El on Krypton. Even though the show follows events far in the past, several favorite DC character, including Hawkgirl, Doomsday, and Brainiac are already set to appear. KRYPTON could go in multiple directions and give us a proper Sci-fi Comic Book show. THE NEW MUTANTS – April 13 Comic book films have taken up many genres as of late. The 2018 comic book movies look to have many genres from the political drama with BLACK PANTHER to the foul-mouthed comedy of DEADPOOL 2. Still, we have yet to have a true horror comic book film. THE NEW MUTANTS is set to take up the mantle as a superhero horror movie. With a fantastic cast of talented young actors including Anya Taylor-Joy (THE WITCH), Maisie Williams (GAME OF THRONES), and Charlie Heaton (STRANGER THINGS), NEW MUTANTS is set to shock and awe audiences with its intriguing story inspired by the works of Stephen King and John Hughes. It looks like an exciting new element in the X-MEN universe and could be a standout of the 2018 comic book movies. AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR – May 4 Out of all the 2018 comic book movies, AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR is by far the most anticipated. In fact, there may have never been a comic book movie as hotly anticipated as this movie. The film marks the beginning of the end for the current Avengers in the MCU. After 18 films, AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR will start concluding stories that first began in 2008. Iron Man, Captain America, Star-Lord, Hulk, Black Widow, Black Panther, Groot, and more are facing their greatest trial yet with the Mad Titan Thanos played by the magnificent Josh Brolin. Heroes will fall in this conflict to decide the fate of reality itself. Will it live up to the hype? Will it break box office records? Nobody knows but INFINITY WAR is ready to set the world ablaze come this May. SUICIDE SQUAD: HELL TO PAY – Spring The Suicide Squad in the comics. Image Courtesy of DC Comics Warner Bros. Animation is releasing three 2018 comic book movies. Among the three is SUICIDE SQUAD: HELL TO PAY. The Suicide Squad is one of the seminal teams in the DC universe. The Suicide Squad is made up of incarcerated, expendable criminals forced to do the government’s dirty work. This makes the team is the perfect government tool to handle massive threats. Now, this iconic team is finally getting an animated movie dedicated to it. The team appeared in the prior animated movie BATMAN: ASSAULT ON ARKHAM which took place in the BATMAN: ARKHAM ASYLUM video game continuity. SUICIDE SQUAD: HELL TO PAY will probably focus on the conception of the team and its first major mission. After the success of films like TEEN TITANS: JUDAS CONTRACT or JUSTICE LEAGUE: DARK, the DC animated universe looked primed to take on this adaption of this iconic group. DCEU: Is An R-Rated Sequel What SUICIDE SQUAD Needs For Redemption? DEADPOOL 2 – June 1, 2018 DEADPOOL might have been 2016’s biggest surprise. The film made audiences overjoyed with its raunchy humor, kickass action, and unpredictable amount of heart. DEADPOOL stands as the highest grossing R-rated film besides the PASSION OF THE CHRIST. Now the “Merc without a Mouth” is returning, and he’s as irreverent as ever. This time Wade Wilson will team up with Cable played by Josh Brolin (his second comic book character this year) in classic buddy-cop style. Cable is an iconic character who’s not known for his humor. The anticipated chemistry between Cable and Ryan Reynold’s Deadpool is the main reason I am so excited for this sequel to claim its place as the most vulgar and gory of the 2018 comic book movies. ANT-MAN AND THE WASP – July 6 Evangeline Lily as The Wasp in ANT-MAN AND THE WASP. Image Courtesy of Marvel Entertainment After 19 films in the MCU, we are getting a film starring two characters. 2015’s ANT-MAN focused on Paul Rudd (CLUELESS, I LOVE YOU, MAN) as Scott Lang as he took on the titular superhero mantle from Hank Pym. Now Evangeline Lily’s Hope van Dyne shares first billing with Lang. This will not be a movie about a hero and his sidekick, but about two equals working together. ANT-MAN and THE WASP also has the potential to be a romantic comedy. Perhaps it will take cues from classics like WHEN HARRY MET SALLY or PRETTY WOMAN. Finally, ANT-MAN and THE WASP is set to bring Michelle Pfeiffer (SCARFACE, BATMAN RETURNS) in as Janet van Dyne, the former Wasp who no doubt Scott and Hope plan to rescue. Between BLACK PANTHER, AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR, and this, what more is there to ask for from Marvel’s 2018 comic book movies? ANT-MAN AND THE WASP: Thoughts for 2018 ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL – July 20 It has been James Cameron’s dream since the early 90s to adapt Yukito Kishiro’s famous manga BATTLE ANGEL ALITA. Cameron is undoubtedly busy with one thousand AVATAR sequels. However, he is producing the live-action adaptation of ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL with Robert Rodriguez (SIN CITY, SPY KIDS) taking the directing helm. ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL follows the cyborg Alita played by Rose Salazar (AMERICAN HORROR STORY, PARENTHOOD) as she becomes a bounty hunter and tries to rediscover some of her lost memories. With a cyberpunk feel to the story, ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL has the potential to be a surprise hit and the most creative of the 2018 comic book movies. VENOM – October 5 Tom Hardy will play Eddie Brock AKA Venom When Sony announced, they were starting their own cinematic universe many (including me) didn’t take them seriously. Then they cast Tom Hardy (DARK KNIGHT RISES, THE REVENANT) as Eddie Brock/Venom. Now they have everybody’s attention. Tom Hardy is easily one of the greatest actors working today, but he is also one of the most selective. The fact that he wanted to take on a comic book project bodes well for the VENOM script. Then the fact that VENOM added the talent of Michelle Williams (MANCHESTER BY THE SEA, BLUE VALENTINE), Riz Ahmed (ROGUE ONE), and Woody Harrelson (NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN, THE HUNGER GAMES) bodes particularly well for the start of this Sony franchise. VENOM promises to have a darker, foreboding tone and likely an R-rating. This could distinguish itself greatly from the kid-friendly MCU 2018 comic book movies. X-MEN: DARK PHOENIX – November 2 Sophie Turner as Jean Grey in X-MEN: DARK PHOENIX. Image Courtesy of 20th Century Fox There are three mutant-related 2018 comic book movies. X-MEN: DARK PHOENIX reunites the most famous team of mutants. Simon Kinberg, who has produced all of the X-MEN films, is making his directorial debut with this movie. Kinberg promises to tell a more faithful adaptation of Chris Claremont’s THE DARK PHOENIX SAGA than X-MEN: THE LAST STAND. Set in the 1990s, DARK PHOENIX will see the X-Men coming into their own as superheroes. PHOENIX RESURRECTION #1 Review: Stranger Things After a mission into space, Jean Grey becomes imbued with the powers of “the Phoenix” but begins to think irrationally. The film will follow Sophie Turner (GAME OF THRONES) as Jean Grey as she tries to figure out what’s going on with her. Jean will be the center of a major conflict between Michael Fassebender’s (12 YEARS A SLAVE, INGLORIOUS BASTERDS) Magneto, who now leads rogue mutants on the island of Genosha, the X-Men, and a mysterious shape-shifting alien played by Jessica Chastain (ZERO DARK THIRTY, MOLLY’S GAME). With all of this going for it X-MEN: DARK PHOENIX promises to be the most comic accurate X-MEN film yet! SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE – December 14 The two Sony 2018 comic book movies are underdogs. Just as many underestimated VENOM before Tom Hardy’s casting, so did many disregard the Miles Morales animated film titled SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE. When Sony released its first trailer for the movie, the anticipation of theatergoers went from middling to very high. The 3D computer-animated world that Sony Pictures Animation has produced looks nothing short of “Spectacular.” Miles Morales is such a fantastic character that fans have been begging for on the big screen. He deserves a terrific adaptation, and with a story from Phil Lord and Chris Miller (THE LEGO MOVIE, 21 JUMP STREET), he may just get that. Then Sony seems to be exploring the “Spider-Verse” which connects several Spider-Men from different universes. Could this be a hint that Sony is planning a Spider-Verse live-action film in the future? No matter the answer, SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE looks like an exciting take on a fan-favorite character. AQUAMAN – December 21 Jason Momoa as Arthur Curry/Aquaman in AQUAMAN. Image Courtesy of Warner Bros. Entertainment Unlike other franchises which have multiple 2018 comic book movies coming out, The DCEU only has one film. However, just like WONDER WOMAN this movie has the potential to leave a lasting impression. That film is AQUAMAN starring Jason Momoa (FRONTIER). Fans of GAME OF THRONES know that Momoa’s charisma is off the charts. He was born to play the King of Atlantis. While Marvel movies are skirting away from origin movies, DC has a lot to gain from showing us the beginning of its most iconic characters. AQUAMAN #31 Review: Justice Rises in Atlantis AQUAMAN will focus on Arthur Curry struggling to find his place as a man of two worlds: Atlantis and the land. James Wan (THE CONJURING, FURIOUS 7) is directing this film which includes Nicole Kidman (MOULIN ROUGE), Willem Dafoe (SPIDER-MAN), Patrick Wilson (WATCHMEN), and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (THE GET DOWN). Hopefully, with AQUAMAN, we’ll get to examine the psyche of Arthur Curry, the reluctant hero destined for the throne. TITANS – TBD Brenton Thwaites as Dick Grayson AKA Robin in TITANS. Image Courtesy of Warner Bros. Studios Growing up in the early 2000s, TEEN TITANS on the Cartoon Network became a major influence for me. It is probably the main reason I am so into comic books today. That is why I am so excited that Greg Berlanti (once again hard at work), Akiva Goldsman (A BEAUTIFUL MIND, BATMAN FOREVER), Sarah Schechter (THE FLASH, RIVERDALE) and Geoff Johns are developing the TV show TITANS. TITANS will feature classic characters like Dick Grayson/Robin, Starfire, Raven, and Beast Boy. Separate from the CW’s Arrowverse, judging from released pictures this comic book show looks to have a distinct feel. It will combine grittiness with fun, teenage drama. Perhaps we’ll even get our first Batman on TV with Dick Grayson’s major role on TITANS. Perhaps it is a long shot but then again, so was getting Superman on SUPERGIRL, so you never know! The TITANS (2018) Have Found Their Beast Boy! CLOAK & DAGGER – TBD Like ANT-MAN AND THE WASP, CLOAK & DAGGER focuses on a team of two romantically involved superheroes. Olivia Holt plays Tandy Bowen/Dagger, and Aubrey Joseph plays Tyrone Johnson/Cloak. The two play unlikely lovers who come from very different lifestyles from one another. However, both feel the impact the violent drug trade in their communities. After discovering that they have superpowers Tandy and Tyrone become young vigilantes. CLOAK & DAGGER promises to be a darker teen drama focusing on the unusual romance between these two superheroes. Just as did RUNAWAYS before it, CLOAK & DAGGER is an unknown quantity that has the opportunity to expand the MCU in interesting directions. YOUNG JUSTICE: OUTSIDERS – TBD The cast of the upcoming YOUNG JUSTICE: OUTSIDERS. Image Courtesy of Warner Bros. Entertainment After strong viewership ratings on Netflix and an enormous fan campaign, YOUNG JUSTICE is finally coming back with its third season OUTSIDERS. Producer Brandon Vietti has stated that the show is no longer restricted by being on Cartoon Network. He included that the show now has more “creative room to progress into more adult themes and storylines” while not becoming a “swear” or “gorefest.” This is exactly what fans of the original YOUNG JUSTICE wanted. Many of them have grown older, and they want to see their favorite show about young superheroes taken to new locations. Meanwhile, a new generation of young fans will not be alienated with this new show. Expect YOUNG JUSTICE: OUTSIDERS to premiere alongside TITANS on the new DC streaming service. YOUNG JUSTICE: Why I Won’t Watch THE DEATH OF SUPERMAN – TBD A famous panel from DEATH OF SUPERMAN. Image Courtesy of DC Comics THE DEATH OF SUPERMAN is the first of two animated movies focusing on the iconic DEATH AND RETURN OF SUPERMAN storyline. While SUPERMAN: DOOMSDAY did take elements from the classic comic event, it did not capture some of the elements that made this comic book stand the test of time. THE DEATH OF SUPERMAN is set to follow-up with another animated movie REIGN OF THE SUPERMEN. This will tell the story of Cyborg Superman, Steel, and the Eradicator, and Superboy. Hopefully, these movies will bring much more justice to the comic than BATMAN V. SUPERMAN and JUSTICE LEAGUE. THE CHILLING ADVENTURES OF SABRINA – TBD THE CHILLING ADVENTURES OF SABRINA is based on the Archie Comic comic book of the same name. The Comic is a twisted retelling of the Sabrina Spellman who stars in the comic SABRINA THE TEENAGE WITCH. Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, showrunner of RIVERDALE, eyed this early on as a possible sister-show to the CW show. The CW passed on the project, but it is now coming to Netflix. Netflix has already given it a 2-season order. The show is described as “dark coming-of-age tale that traffics in horror, the occult, and witchcraft, naturally.” Another Greg Berlanti/Sarah Schechter project, THE CHILLING ADVENTURES OF SABRINA may flip the Archie universe even more on its head than RIVERDALE did before it.
