A new year means new games and we are excited about 2017’s upcoming releases! From singles to sequels to reboots, this year is going to be full of games from all genres and developers. We have compiled a list of the 19 games that you should look forward to in this year!

(Please note that the list is not in any particular order.)

1. RESIDENT EVIL 7

RESIDENT EVIL 7

Developer: Capcom
Release Date: January 2017
Platform: PS4, Xbox One, PC

The seventh game in the RESIDENT EVIL series is exactly what fans have been waiting for! Developers recognized that the franchise began to move away from horror, becoming action-packed adventures with trigger-happy protagonists, and decided to return RE to its suspenseful roots.

RE7 is set in a dilapidated plantation in fictional Dulvey, Louisiana, that you will have to explore. The story is set a few years after RE6 and you play as Ethan Winters, who is searching for his wife. RE7 is heavily focused on the environment, with an Average Joe protagonist who has little combat training when compared to the muscled superheroes in the previous games.

READ: FINAL FANTASY XV released in November of 2016 with all-male characters, but has challenged how gender roles in media

The best (and most terrifying) part is that RE7 will be in first-person. That’s right, you will experience every element of the game from the perspective of the protagonist! RE7 will also be released for virtual reality (VR), but the game will stay the same no matter how you choose to play it.

You will get the nostalgia of the first RE game mixed with the fear-inducing power of first-person perspective in RE7. At least we will get to heal ourselves with herbs again! (Bella Vanessa Sotomayor)

2. MASS EFFECT: ANDROMEDA

MASS EFFECT ANDROMEDA

Developer: BioWare
Release Date: Spring 2017
Platform: PS4, Xbox One, PC

MASS EFFECT: ANDROMEDA is the fourth game in the critically acclaimed sci-fi franchise; it will take players out of the Milky Way and give them a whole new galaxy to explore. ANDROMEDA promises a compelling story teeming with fascinating characters and unexplored worlds populated with their own unique forms of life. The developers hope to restore the sense of exploration that the franchise has been lacking since the original MASS EFFECT. We know that the ending of ME3 left a sour taste in the mouths of many fans, but we are optimistic that this new installment will be a return to form for the beloved space opera. After all, no one responds better to negative criticism than BioWare (just compare the underwhelming DRAGON AGE 2 with its greatly improved successor, DRAGON AGE: INQUISITION).

With a couple centuries and millions of light years separating it from earlier installments, ANDROMEDA has the freedom to approach MASS EFFECT in some fresh and exciting ways. (Tyler Vertrees)

3. YOOKA-LAYLEE

YOOKA LAYLEE

Developer: Playtonic Games
Release Date: April 2017
Platform: Microsoft Windows, OS X, Linux, PlayStation 4, Wii U, and Xbox One

YOOKA-LAYLEE’s Kickstarter was an incredible success when it became the first game to pass a million dollars. It’s not surprising: Reuniting key members of the RARE team that brought gamers BANJO-KAZOOIE, DONKEY KONG, and CONKER’S BAD FUR DAY, YOOKA-LAYLEE promises to be the first game in the cavalcade of Collect-A-Thon revivals coming.

The plot follows title characters Yooka and Laylee as they leave Shipwreck Creek, their home, to explore the world of Hivory Towers for “Pagies.” “Pagies” seem to be the game’s main collectible, something akin to the “Jiggies” from BANJO-KAZOOIE. Collecting them will be of the utmost importance to progressing the game’s plot. The game will also feature power-ups and other collectibles to ensure that no stone in its rich world is left unturned. (Liam Nolan)

4. TORMENT: TIDES OF NUMENERA

TORMENT: TIDES OF NUMENERA

Developer: InXile Entertainment
Release Date: February 2017
Platforms: PS4, Xbox One, PC

Set in the award-winning setting of “Numenera,” TORMENT: TIDES OF NUMENERA is a science-fantasy role-playing game developed by InXile Entertainment. The game takes place in a bizarre world full of aliens, wizards, nanobots, and monsters. The story centers around the mysterious “Changing God,” a being whose spirit jumps between bodies so he can never truly die. As the Changing God’s latest “cast off” body, you need to piece together your sires’ past and defeat a cosmic threat that is hunting you both.

One of the most successful kickstarted video games of all time, NUMENERA promises to be a spiritual successor to the cult classic PLANESCAPE TORMENT, offering compelling gameplay, a wide variety of choices and outcomes, a deep, philosophical narrative, and a persistent sense of wonder and adventure. (psychotrip)

5. PERSONA 5

PERSONA 5

Developer: ATLUS
Release Date: April 2017
Platform: PS4, PS3

Wake up, get up, and get out there to fight oppression with the sixth and latest installment in ATLUS’s popular JRPG series, PERSONA 5. Set in Tokyo Shibuya, the game follows a group of high school students (they even have an anthropomorphic cat) called the Phantom Thieves of Hearts. Sounds fabulous right? That’s not all: classic fans of ATLUS’s old school RPG titles may be delighted to hear that demon negotiation is back as enemies can once again be recruited to aid you in battles. Dungeon exploring will be more strategic through puzzle solving and utilizing stealth to gain the initiative against enemies. Just be sure not to get detected! It’s like a heist mission.

Each character now also utilizes a short-range melee weapon and a long-range firearm. Our favorite addition is the online Phantom Thieves Alliance feature which allows other players to step in and help with battles. Overall, ATLUS’s new title is shaping up to be an amazing game with its exciting new features and a new surreal storyline. Did we forget to mention that this will be the first in the series to implement dual audio? (Soren Sum)

6. VAMPYR

VAMPYR

Developer: DontNod Entertainment
Release Date: TBD 2017
Platform: PS4, Xbox One, PC

VAMPYR is an action-RPG set in 1918 London, during the Spanish Flu epidemic. The player controls Jonathan E. Reid, a doctor who also happens to be a vampire, who must weigh his need to feed against his Hippocratic Oath to do no harm. Although it is possible to beat the game without killing anyone, it is impossible to level up without taking innocent lives. No decision is without consequence and the player must achieve a balance between Reid’s dueling urges. It is the player’s responsibility to gather information about potential victims to determine who deserves to live and who deserves to die.

After the success of LIFE IS STRANGE, it’s exciting to see that DontNod is developing something completely different in terms of tone and gameplay style. Like its predecessor, VAMPYR is narrative driven and the player’s decisions shape the final outcome of the story. The game, however, is darker and more overtly violent than LIFE IS STRANGE, and relies heavily on combat for the player to progress. The success of VAMPYR will assure that DontNod’s legacy will transcend the success of just one game, and establish the studio as one to watch in the future. (Lindsey Mott)

7. GOD OF WAR

GOD OF WAR - photo courtesy of Sony

Developer: Sony Santa Monica Studio
Release Date: December 2017
Platform: PS4

Kratos is returning this year and it is like nothing we have seen before. GOD OF WAR (often dubbed GOD OF WAR 4) may be taking its title from the first game in the series, but it is definitely taking a step away from the original premise. We will no longer hunt down Greek gods and goddesses; instead, Sony is introducing us to the world of Norse Mythology.

It is the eighth installment in the series, taking place after the events of GOD OF WAR 3. The game, however, is a soft reboot. Kratos now lives in a forest with his son, whom he mentors on how to survive. We do not know much about the game beyond the trailer that was released at E3 in 2016, but it is clear that Kratos’s mission is to protect the life he has created for his small family. Cory Barlog, the creative director for the game, stated that the new GOD OF WAR will explore Kratos’s attempt to keep his rage in check, navigate through a different world and make different decisions, and protect his son at all costs. 8. RED DEAD REDEMPTION 2

RED DEAD REDEMPTION 2

Developer: Rockstar Studios
Release Date: Fall 2017
Platform: PS4, Xbox One, PC

In our opinion, RED DEAD REDEMPTION was one of the single greatest games of the previous console generation. It took a fading genre with little appeal and managed to give it new life. Set in the waning days of the old west, RED DEAD allowed players the freedom to explore a rich, open-world as it told a powerful story about remorse, redemption, and the inability to escape our fate. RED DEAD 2 has some mighty big boots to fill, but if anyone can do it, it is the folks at Rockstar.

As one of the few developers that manage to exceed expectations, Rockstar has a reputation for raising the bar with each new project, and we doubt that this game will be any different. While very little has been revealed, it is safe to expect a larger, more detailed world akin to GTA 5 and perhaps the ability to control multiple characters. Whatever new tricks it has in store, RED DEAD REDEMPTION 2 is definitely a game you won’t want to miss. (Tyler Vertrees)

9. LEGEND OF ZELDA: BREATH OF THE WILD

LEGEND OF ZELDA: BREATH OF THE WILD

Developer: Nintendo
Release Date: TBD 2017
Platform: Wii U, Nintendo Switch

What more can be said about BREATH OF THE WILD? Fans were stunned and excited at the new direction of the ZELDA series, returning to its roots by focusing on adventure and exploration while modernizing the mechanics to better achieve that goal. Despite the hype, there is still a lot of mystery surrounding the game’s story, dungeons, and villains. But what’s clear is that the game is a departure in many ways from its predecessors. Some say BREATH OF THE WILD’s gameplay is similar to THE ELDER SCROLLS and DARK SOULS, but in reality, both games were inspired by classic ZELDA games.

With the addition of sci-fi elements, new methods of traversal, and some light survival mechanics, BREATH OF THE WILD is shaping up to be an exciting new entry into the series, and we hope it lives up to our expectations. (psychotrip)

10. MARVEL VS CAPCOM INFINITE

Developer: Capcom
Release Date: Fall 2017
Platform: PS4, Xbox One, PC

Fighting gamers and MVC fans rejoice! There is no need to wait ten more years for another release date or jokingly say “when’s Mahvel” anymore. First announced at Sony’s PlayStation Experience 2016, MARVEL VS CAPCOM INFINITE came as a surprise. Rumors were already circulating that a MVC title was in the works, but with INFINITE, it cemented those rumors. The hype was real. It was a gift from the fighting game gods. This time around, the game will be a throwback to classics like MARVEL SUPER HEROES (MSH) since it will feature a 2v2 fighting system, compared to the usual 3v3 system with assists from the previous two titles.

The game features six characters: Iron Man, Captain Marvel (Carol Danvers), Captain America, Mega Man X, Morrigan, and Ryu. Danvers is a new addition to the MVC series and Mega Man has been absent in the series since MVC2. The game will also see the return of Infinity Stones (Gems) from MSH, which give characters unique power-ups. For example, Power Stone gives strength and Time Stone affects maneuverability. Absent from INFINITE will be the ability to call assists, but instead, players can switch characters mid-combo or swap them out any time. Definitely be on the lookout for this title later in 2017. Let’s just hope that there’s still some crazy and flashy combos. (Soren Sum)

11. FRIDAY THE 13TH: THE GAME

Developer: Gun Media and Illfonic
Release Date: Early 2017
Platform: PS4, Xbox One, and PC

Although video games based on movies are not typically worth your time or money, FRIDAY THE 13TH: THE GAME looks like it will become the exception to this rule. Originally titled “Slasher Vol. 1: Summer Camp,” the game was conceived as an homage to the FRIDAY THE 13TH franchise, but it had no affiliation. However, after the developers met with director Sean S. Cunningham and expressed their love for his films, Cunningham gave the game his official stamp of approval.

Regardless of how you feel about the film franchise, FRIDAY THE 13th: THE GAME is a survival horror game for people who are sick of survival horror games. Up to seven camp counselors must escape Camp Crystal Lake, hide, or work together to take down Jason Voorhees. One player controls Jason, with the goal of killing as many of the other players as possible. With a focus on strategy and teamwork rather than combat and jump scares, the game is turning out to be a unique and atmospheric asymmetrical multiplayer experience that is just as fun as it scary. (Lindsey Mott)

12. THE WALKING DEAD: A NEW FRONTIER

THE WALKING DEAD - photo courtesy of Steam

Developer: Telltale Games
Release Date: 2016-2017
Platform: PS4, Xbox One, PC, OS X, iOS, Android

Based on the comics written by Robert Kirkman, the latest installment of Telltale’s point-and-click series continues Clementine’s compelling narrative. Unlike the TV show, Telltale’s adaptation actually understands its source material, delivering an experience that is true to Kirkman’s bleak vision. It is a game that confronts the player with gut-wrenching scenarios and profound moral quandaries. While your choices may not have an enormous impact on the overall arc, that is not really the point. Telltale games give you the ability to interpret your character however you’d like. Is Clementine a pragmatic survivalist? Or is she a moral, altruistic person? You give context to the narrative through the things you say and the decisions you make. With countless choices and dialogue options, no two Clementines are exactly alike.

The first two episodes were released back in December, and the third season is already off to a strong start. Keep your eyes peeled for the final three installments scheduled for release sometime in 2017. (Tyler Vertrees)

13. WARHAMMER 40,000: DAWN OF WAR III

DAWN OF WAR III

Developer: Relic Entertainment
Release Date: TBD 2017
Platform: PC

WARHAMMER 40,000 is a time-honored science-fantasy universe, where sorcerers and demons clash with super soldiers and giant mechs. The latest installment in the “Dawn of War” series of real-time strategy games looks to combine the large scale of the first game with the focus of the second. At launch, the game will feature space marines, eldar, and orks, but hopefully additional factions will be available after launch. In a market saturated with mediocre 40k games, DAWN OF WAR 3 is looking to break the mold and revitalize the franchise. (psychotrip)

14. THE LAST OF US PART II

Developer: Naughty Dog
Release Date: TBA
Platform: PS4

We flipped when we heard Naughty Dog’s announcement about THE LAST OF US PART II at PlayStation Experience 2016. While MVC INFINITE took us by surprise, TLOU2 reaffirmed our affinity for the series and we immediately replayed the first title. Not much is known about TLOU2 except that it takes place five years after the first game and players will assume control of 19-year-old Ellie, as stated in a panel during PS Experience. The announcement trailer also confirms Joel’s return but as a supporting character this time.

Developers have also stated that the game’s theme will be based on hatred. How this plays into the game’s story has yet to be revealed, but one thing is for sure: Ellie looks angry. Five years in a post-apocalyptic world will do that to you. For now, just speculate away and if you haven’t, please go play the first game. There’s no official release date yet, but we’re expecting TLOU2 to be just as good as the first title with its emotionally driven cinematic story. (Soren Sum)

15. LITTLE NIGHTMARES

Developer: Tarsier Studios
Release Date: Spring 2017
Platform: PS4, Xbox One, and PC

LITTLE NIGHTMARES is an unsettling and surreal puzzle-platformer inspired by childhood fears. You play as Six, a small girl in a yellow raincoat, who is taken to the Maw, a bleak world submerged underwater. Armed with only a lighter, Six must utilize her small size and intelligence to escape the grotesqueries that wish to keep her in the Maw forever.

Perfect for fans of indie darlings UNRAVEL, LIMBO, and INSIDE, LITTLE NIGHTMARES’s gameplay consists of a combination of platforming, stealth, and physics puzzles. Other than the footage taken from the demo, the game’s previews and trailers have shown very little of the actual game. We still don’t know the number of monstrosities that lie in wait in the Maw, what exactly the Maw is, or for what purpose Six has been taken there. These unknowns make the prospect of playing LITTLE NIGHTMARES all the more terrifying. If the Twin Chefs are any indication of what’s to come, LITTLE NIGHTMARES is going to be actual nightmare fuel for players young and old alike. (Lindsey Mott)

16. SEA OF THIEVES

SEA OF THIEVES

Developer: Rare
Release Date: Early 2017
Platform: Xbox One, PC

SEA OF THIEVES is an open world, multiplayer pirate game, and something we never knew we wanted. Sailing the open seas with your friends isn’t a novel concept, but few games have the charm, the gameplay, and the beautiful art style to create a satisfying experience. The game will feature user-generated content, allowing players to create their own scenarios using in-game tools. SEA OF THIEVES is a game about exploration, treasure-hunting, and stealing from your rivals. If that sounds up your alley, you may want to check this game out. (psychotrip)

17. MARVEL’S GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY: THE TELLTALE SERIES

Developer: Telltale Games
Release Date: TBD 2017
Platform: PS4, Xbox One, PC, Mobile

We gotta tell you how “hooked on a feeling” we are right now with Telltale Games’ latest entry in its TELLTALE SERIES. The company has even expanded to Marvel now. The announcement of GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY as the next in line of episodic gaming has been confirmed by Telltale themselves during the 2016 Game Awards of Los Angeles. There’s even a teaser to accompany the announcement.

There’s no solid release date yet, but developers have stated that the first of five episodes should be out in 2017. With the success of previous Telltale titles like THE WALKING DEAD and WOLF AMONG US, there’s no doubt that GOTG will be just as good. For now, we’ll just be “high on believing” that this is one of our favorite announcements since we are most definitely GOTG fans. (Soren Sum)

18. NIGHT IN THE WOODS

Developer: Infinite Fall
Release Date: February 2017
Platform: PS4, PC, OS X, and Linux

In NIGHT IN THE WOODS, the player controls anthropomorphic cat and college dropout Mae, who has recently returned to her small hometown of Possum Springs. The player navigates Mae through the complexities of young adulthood as she moves back in with her parents, tries to reconnect with old friends, and faces the darkness that lurks in the woods. You know, just typical young adult stuff.

NIGHT IN THE WOODS is a side-scrolling adventure game; it was crowd-funded on Kickstarter in 2013 and reached its funding goal in just 26 hours. Given the strong artistic vision of this project, it’s easy to see why NIGHT IN THE WOODS resonated with so many people.

The creative team behind the game knows what it’s like to be a young adult: funny, weird, and sometimes scary. The unique art style in conjunction with the dryly witty dialogue and synth-heavy soundtrack creates a tone that is simultaneously adorable and heartbreakingly nihilistic. NIGHT IN THE WOODS promises to be a gorgeous, surprising, and emotional journey for all who play it. It is a prime example of the blurring line between video games and more traditional art forms. (Lindsey Mott)

19. OUTLAST 2

OUTLAST 2

Developer: Red Barrels Studio
Release Date: TBD 2017
Platform: PS4, Xbox One, PC/OS X

If AMNESIA revitalized the horror genre, OUTLAST refined the formula. The polish, mechanics, and terrifying atmosphere created an experience that shook us to the bone, leaving our knees shaking and our pants worse for wear. The sequel is shaking things up with a new environment set in the Sonoran Desert, new enemies, and what looks like a more cultish theme. The story centers on a journalist investigating the mysterious murder of a young woman in Arizona, only to find himself in the clutches of an apocalyptic death-cult.

Even if it started to fall flat toward the end, the first OUTLAST was one of the best indie games we ever played, and we hope the sequel takes the series to new heights. (psychotrip)
